Welcome to Junior Hockey Magazineâ€™s Draft Profile, in this section we will give you the most in-depth look at an upcoming SMJHL prospect for the S28 SMJHL Draft. In this weekâ€™s edition we will be giving you the inside looks on Felix Herzog. Herzog is 17 years old and hails from Schaafhausen, Switzerland. Switzerland has never been well represented in the SHL or the SMJHL as I believe the highest Swiss born scorer in history of both league is Christian Blauch from ways long time ago and he wasn't very good either. So while Herzog comes with a nice pedigree of training for six seasons with Djurgarden in Stockholm, Herzog will need to break the mold of Swiss-born skaters that can't hack it in the SHL. This will be a full access look into Felix Herzog;

One of Felix Herzog's greatest assets is that he's lightning quick. We're talking elite speed for any age group but he's the type of skater that people are in awe to watch. In skates just a mere day after taking his first steps, Felix was skating with his older brother, Damos at the local ice rink, which his father co-owned. After showing a natural gift for it, his father trained him in the "ins and outs" of skating. Felix didn't even hold a stick till after just skating for 3 years. While his talent isn't at it's fullest potential, his potential is legendary.

Coachability is one thing, but Felix carries himself at the highest level on the ice. He's always studying the game and watching game film. He usually carries around an iPad just to have game film to watch on the train or bus trips. Studious in all zones, his game is still known to be an offensive genius. Still learning the defensive zone coverage, he's driven to learn and get better for his team. Shows the knack to help his teammates after practices or on off days when coaches aren't available.

When he was 11 years old he scored the league championship winning goal with two seconds left in a tie game. At the age of thirteen Felix notched the 14U WJC Bronze Medal winning goal in double OT after actually leaving the game for fifteen minutes after a high stick knocked out a tooth. The kid has a heart bigger than his own country and will bleed for his team to get a much needed goal. He's not the type of offensive player that will stay away from the chaos in front of the net.

Felix has strong hands which helps him control the puck in traffic. He's not going to wow you with his nifty moves but he's going to protect the puck and make a smart hockey play. Still very coachable, he could develop into the type of player that just lifts the fans out of the stands, and at his age he has his moments. He's driven to make the smart play and he's easily one of the puck handlers I've seen around the net for his age. One of his best traits is that he's not afraid to get in front and take a couple slashes to drive the offense, something that isn't easily done by offensive forwards.

Weaknesses

Of course every player has weaknesses or glaring holes in their skills and Felix has them. Passing while he's definitely working on it. It isn't close to being SHL worthy and will need time to sharpen, LOTS of time. He usually choose to make short passes or drop passes because he looks timid throwing hard or cross ice passes. While his hockey IQ is high, many people question the passes he tries to force to make a play happen. With coaching this negative can certain turn into a positive.

While Felix does sport a physique that most men would die for, He's not extremely strong. His passes aren't super crisp all the time and his shot while deadly aimed, his velocity is weak and needs to be improved badly. He's great along the boards but against some of the stronger SHL players, he could and would get rag dolled every game in his current state. Once implemented into a SHL like training and conditioning, there's no saying Herzog could be like a bull on his skates. He's just need to get there fast.

While Felix Herzog only missed half a season with a broken ankle when he was 14, Felix hasn't had major injuries in his career. However there are rumors that he is a bit of a diva when it comes to injuries. During games he'll fight through a wall but after he's always needing attention medical wise. Whether he's just not durable or just can't fight through some pain, Felix will need to toughen up off the ice.

Felix is considered to be a confident player, will be sometimes come along as brash or cocky, Herzog is a team player, he's coachable and is a leader on or off the ice. He's the first to help a teammate and is extremely studious in learning the game more. He's not afraid to display some "swagger" to his words. He'll be a player that leads by example and gives his team the jolt they need late into a game.

Player Comparison

SHL Comparison: Daniel Merica.
Yes, Daniel Merica was sometimes thought as a heel in the media, He was a team first guy in the end. Like Daniel, Felix has the ice cold veins to get big time goals in pressure situations and loves to bleed offense. Felix and Daniel are both explosive skaters that fight for the puck and will make the right hockey play. Merica is a champion through and through and If Felix ever hits the legendary status of that Merica left the SHL with, Herzog will officially put Switzerland on the map in the SHL.

NHL Comparison: Zach Parise.
Heart of a champion and someone that is going to go through hell and back for his team. How many NHLers can fit that description? Some but Zach Parise lives those words. Like Zach, Felix is a tenacious worker that does anything to get a win and doesn't mind to get into the dirty areas. He's a blue-collar type of player with the flash and skills of a elite sniper. Felix brings a type of game most Europeans won't play, that's why it fits his potential comparison is a hard-working American.

Predictions

It's hard to predict a player's trajectory since many factors feed into it along the life of his career. Injuries, motivation, team play, etc. but with Felix Herzog you can just feel that he's going to have a long and productive career. He should reach his fullest potential if he continues to do the right things and develop within his team. He has the potential to be an elite scorer in the SHL and be a big time leader for his future organization. Felix will always be a team-first player and I don't see that changing anytime soon. He's a great player and could become a franchise player one day.

For Felix Herzog the limits are boundless. He's a great team player that can fit into any type of offense. He's going to be one of those players that just seem to find those right spots to shine and give his team cups, I mean do people remember anything about Justin Williams besides his knack for game winning goals in pressure situations? He'll be the first to pass on accolades to his teammates and he's the type of player that learns every game. Look for Herzog to have a long career of incredible hockey and become the SHL's first Swiss Superstar.

They're all Alexander Wennberg from when he played for Djurgarden in Sweden.
