The Rage youth movement begins now
#1

Everyone wants to succeed. It’s a given that when a player comes up from juniors and joins their respective team in the big leagues, they want to make a positive impact. For those who are drafted onto rebuilding teams, they might even dream about being able to come up and become the savior of the franchise. That one player who helps to bring that team back to the promise land of the play-offs. For the Manhattan Rage, a team that has gone through what might be gently called a ‘rough patch’ when it comes to unexpected retirements and just general aging of the core, the youth movement begins this season with several of those hopeful young players having seen their debut.

Chris Crutchfield:
Selected second overall, the exceptional two way defenceman is almost opposite in playing style to former Captain Roy Razin. The team was sold on his ability to shut down the opposition, destroy them physically and lead the team through thick and thin, all of which he has done in spades since he has been brought up to the big leagues. His positive influence in the locker room has netted him the confidence of his peers as he was voted by a landslide to become one of the alternate Captains this season.

Stats wise, he currently holds the second highest plus/minus on the team, while playing in all situations. He edges out Jakobsen as for the most hits on the team and as of this moment, he is tied with several other players for second most goals on the team with four. Both him and defensive partner, Roy Razin complement each other well stylistically, allowing both players to play their games to their fullest.

Wendell Luna:
Taken 25th overall in the same draft as Crutchfield, Wendell might not be as heralded a prospect but he has done the work and come into the big league in the same season as his more celebrated draft-mate. A true defensive defenceman, Wendell’s quiet demeanor has not stopped him from making a positive influence on the team. Currently playing on the second pairing with the oldest member of the Rage, Willie Weber. Wendell has two points, a minus one and plays an almost exclusively defensive role for the Rage. Given the type of player he is, it’s not surprising that his point totals are low but one might be surprised to find that he had ten points in pre-season, showing a flicker of offensive instincts and the possibility that if he continues to train, he may end up scoring more then his fair share of points during his career.

Selena Bauer:
The ninth overall pick, Selena was slated to start her SHL career this season but the acquisition of Tyler No Nerves has allowed her to return to her junior team for one last season and a final chance to hone her skills. Not that she needs it, as she was given six games in the big leagues to give her a taste of what it would be like next season and absolutely killed it. Going 4 – 1 – 1 with a .958% and a miniscule 1.46 goals against, she was only defeated in the regulation after stopping 49 of 52 pucks when the team in front of her apparently decided that actually defending was for suckers. Since returning to juniors, she has continued her dominance of the crease, posting a 4 – 1 – 1, .921%, 1.81 GAA. Needless to say, the Rage management is happy to see her perform so well.

While those three are the only ones to see time in the big leagues this season, the Rage also hold several other notable prospects who may be ready to move into the big leagues as soon as next season.

Jacob Andrews:
The second Rage goalie prospect, Jacob has been quietly developing into a solid goaltender. Currently sporting a solid .910% and 2.24 GAA with a 6 – 4 – 3 record this season, he will surely be looking to take his place in the SHL proper in the next season or two.

Gunnar Rask:
Drafted second overall in the most recent draft, he was touted as being almost SHL ready as is. An extra season in junior can only do him good as he looks to perfect his game before moving to the big time. Currently sporting an almost point per game pace, with 3 goals and 7 assists, it’s certain the Rage management and fans are looking forward to him helping put pucks in the net sooner rather than later.

Xavier Laine:
Both Rage management and Xavier himself knew that he would need another season to work on his game before he could come up and he looks to be making the post of it as he currently has 5 goal, 3 assists so far. He looks like a gem and could be joining the Rage as soon as next season.
