SHL Hot Ice EP102: Interview with Kez Talks prospects, draft and expansion
#1

Welcome to Hot Ice! Yes, we are aware at this time that xtranormal isn't a graded media outlet at the moment, but that isn't stopping from creating another recruiting avenue by utilizing YouTube. We are working on a full-scale production schedule that will include interviews, post-game analysis, breaking news and many other exciting elements. We hope you enjoy the second episode! As a side note, I am looking for anyone who would be interested in creating some YouTube channel artwork and a profile icon for Hot Ice.

Transcript:

Paul: Welcome back to the SHL Hot Ice program and today we have Wyatt Night Kez, the commissioner of the SMJHL Junior Hockey League.

Kez: Hello Paul, thanks for having me!

Paul: So, I've been hearing rumblings of many prospects filing for entrance into the upcoming draft.

Kez: That is correct. It has been an absolutely crazy last few days, but with the staff we have everything looks ready to go for Monday night as we approach draft time.

Paul: Well that is great to hear. Speaking of all of these prospects, what are your thoughts on the draft class?

Kez: Very thrilled that a milestone season has attracted a huge number of interested players, a couple seasons ago there was worries that the league wasn't sustainable, so to see so many interested prospects, the vast majority of whom are first time players (not recreates) is a testament to the appeal of our league. I hope that people see the potential in having fun, and making friends and rivals!

Paul: Were you shocked by so many prospects entering late?

Kez: It certainly was more than we anticipated, but our summer drafts have always been the most popular. I kind of thought we might have gotten all we could from Reddit, but clearly there are a ton of people who did not know about us! I hope that the majority stay interested and active!

Paul: Are there thoughts of expansion in the near future?

Kez: No. We expanded in S25, and 8 teams in my opinion is a perfect balance and blend. The SMJHL is a development league for the SHL, and there is a lot of turnover from season to season in the juniors. Expanding now would be premature, I think. There are tons of roster spots available even for a class as big as this. In the last few seasons teams have been relying on inactive players to fill roster spots, so I don't think that will be an issue this season!

Paul: You have been through many drafts, what would you say is the attrition rate of those who become prospects and make it to the SHL?

Kez: Season to season it seems about 50% eventually make the jump, and about 25 % make a career out of it. Maybe 10% become superstars.

Paul: Any prospects that stick out in this draft for you?

Kez: I keep my eye on all of them, I try not to play favorites as the commissioner, I want to be unbiased and encourage everyone to be the best they can be. I'm also an SHL GM, though, with the Manhattan Rage, so I also think about who might be a great prospect and fit for our team. I tend to favor players who like to write media articles and seem to have a fun sense of humor. It's a little too early to really judge anyone, but obviously a player like Jason Aittokallio would be an incredible player to have on my team, given the track record of JayWhy's previous player. Although I do tend to have a fondness for first-gens.

Paul: What would you say is the hardest attribute to predict when drafting prospects?

Kez: Statistical success in the SMJHL does not always carry over to SHL. That is why things like personality, LR fit, activity levels, and general awesomeness count a lot more than goals and assists. Also individual stats are often determined by line combos and chemistry, so a great season in juniors doesn't guarantee SHL success, and the opposite is equally true.

Paul: Well Kez, once again I appreciate you coming on to the show today. For us here at Hot Ice, thank you for joining us and we will see you soon. I'm Paul... Stay hot, SHL hockey family.

Big thank you to Wyatt Night Kez for being on the show!

Dat shoutout.

Good interview there.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.
