Week #7, Game 115
Halifax Raiders vs Colorado Mammoths linkerdino
the Raiders and Mammoths do not share much of a rivalry despite being the 2 expansions teams in the SMJHL. They do, however, have a lot in common. They are both tight knit teams that protect their teammates when they’re down, and they have the top 2 goalies in the league at the moment.
The Raiders, currently the best team in the league, somehow failed to win this game despite dominating it. Ekaterina Rudnikova played out of her mind, and cemented her spot at the top. Pel, currently the top goaltender of the SMJHL, unfortunately failed to really perform. The penalties were high early on, and the 3rd period had no goals and only 2 penalties, ending up quite boring.
Halifax is completely gooning things up in this game *shocker* It looks like it made a difference too, with Colorado taking advantage of one of the multitude of man advantages.

But he was only helpful as a secondary assist on one of 3 powerplay chances. Should that second powerplay line really only be the second line? Maybe Svensson should be better than he is currently with what looks to be a lack-luster man advantage effort.

Also would like to point out that mel24 has been cornering the market of Russian SMJHL POTY. This performance is only one in a list of backstop games that has Rudnikova 2nd in GAA and Save % (behind Georgette Pel, mind you, but Pel's 21 games played pales to Rudnikova's 34). Meanwhile, #Bustkova finishes yet another Raiders game with 0 points and Zach Evans isn't top 10 in goals or assists.
Rudnikova looks poised to backstop Russia for years to come with performances like the one today.
Big win for !! Glad I could help out with a pair of assists. Kat had a fantastic game with 27 saves. Colorado had a pretty solid power play night going 3 for 6. Obviously those goals ended up being the difference. That's huge for our power play which has been struggling a bit this season.
Is that was I'm supposed to do mpc ?

3 of those, but maybe a little more substance. Look at my comments and how they put a little work into moving the story of the game in a certain direction.

And really that powerplay was made this game so special.
You've got a 3-1 win, and a beautiful 3 of 6 on the powerplay. Halifax was just NOT getting it done down a man in this one.
First you've got this shot by Hagan, which opened the scoring on the powerplay.
Then you've got Eichelele with the extreme patience to put this one away and make it 2-1 Colorado on the powerplay:
And then of course the goal that really put the nail in the coffin was Goddard's blast from the point. Certainly not as fancy as the others, but a goal all the same:

Player comparison
Greta Iversen vs William Goddard
William Goddard got 2nd star of the game and for good reason, putting up the daggar goal with 3 and a half minutes to go, going up 3-1 to seal off the lead at crunch time. Along with the goal, he had a helper, 1 block and a hit so he did his part as a defender too, making him an all round presence in this game.
Greta Iversen played 17:13 of ice time with an even +/-, that's 4 minutes less than Goddard and still was able perform at his level. Greta had 1 assist, a shot block and a hit. That might not seem much but it was a very competitive game and even the smallest of details made all the difference. Iversen was one of the few players on this squad tonight that was able to execute and she kept the Raiders in with solid fundamentals.
1. Holy god, how many PIMs will defenseman Marc Leclerc accrue this season? The Halifax Raiders seem to have traded for a goon. However, with a reasonable point production to back up his PIMs, hit count, and shot block, the team has no room to complain.
2. Where is Pietra Volkova? Sure as hell not on the ice. With a stat-line showing a nice collection of 0s, the Raiders have to be wondering what it will take to kick their captain into gear. Almost as underwhelming as last season, Volkova will be spending many more seasons in juniors than she'd like to if she keeps performing at this pitiful level.
3. What's happened to Jean-Luc Reflieux's face-off performance? The Panthers prospect is coming off a Cup-winning season in which he would often have 60%+ face-off statistics in games. Tonight's 31% performance in the dot, however, is symptomatic of a greater problem in the center-turned-winger-turned-center's training. If he's going to continue to play center, especially if that's the position he'll be looking to play in Los Angeles, he'll need to crank his face-off training up a bit more.
4. If the problem isn't in shot production, where exactly is it? The Raiders outshot the Mammoths 28 to 19 tonight, yet still lost by two goals. Five players had at least three shots on the night, but out of 28 shots, only a single one found the back of Rudnikova's net. Where is the gap between shot production and shot conversion? Whether it be strategy changes or line changes that need to be made, something needs to be fixed - the Raiders are clearly capable of solid offensive pressure, they just need to find a way to start converting more. 5. Sophomore phenom Ekaterina Rudnikova had another fantastic showing on the night, posting a 0.964 SV% and a near shutout in a victory over fellow female goalie Georgette Pel. With another first-star earning performance, Rudnikova is out to prove that she shouldn't have been the last goalie picked up from her draft class. Rudnikova is the bright spot on a third-place Mammoths lineup, and if the Mammoths want any chance at moving past a first-round playoff exit, they'll be leaning heavily on Rudnikova's glove.
6. Tonight improves Colorado's performance at the Pepsi Center to 8-3-0. Unfortunately, they can't play all their games in Denver, but this is the type of mindset they need at home if they want to even have a chance at making a push for a strong playoff seeding.
7. Colorado's special teams came out to play tonight. The Mammoths' power-play went 3-for-6, with the entirety of their scoring on the night coming off the sticks of that top-6 power play unit. The penalty kill easily shut down Reflieux and the rest of Halifax's power play, going a perfect 3-for-3. If the key to winning games for the Mammoths is special team performance, this is a good sign moving forward in the season.
8. Colorado defenseman Matthew Leetch has come into his own ever since getting the "C" sewn onto his jersey. Leetch had another solid outing tonight, with assists on both the first and last Mammoths goals. While he did not earn a star, his contribution to his team's victory over a league-leading Halifax team probably merited one - expect to continue to see him towards the top of the Colorado leaderboards in both production and star power from here on out.
A retrospective analysis: Many of these problems early on in the season were symptomatic of what would become recurring issues with both of these teams. Unfortunately, Rudnikova and the Mammoths were eliminated by Vancouver in the first round of the playoffs. They were able to win two of the three games they played at home during the series, but lost all but one of their away games to lose in 7. Their inability to convert on key power plays down the stretch would ultimately prove a detriment to their playoff aspirations in a series full of special team ice time. Rudnikova's god-tier goaltending was ultimately unsustainable, and the Whalers managed to chase her out in Game 7 in a 5-3 victory. Halifax, on the other hand, managed to win a well-fought six-game series against Detroit to repeat as Eastern Conference champions. Jean-Luc Reflieux's 54% FO through ten games is beginning to mirrorr his performance from last season, and new captain Pietra Volkova has finally begun to come into her own, leading the goal scoring race with 7 goals through 10 games. The Raiders have learned how to drive up their shot counts. All of these factors will be key for Halifax if they are to pull off a repeat of last season.
This was one of those games that showed the limitations of plus/minus. Soon to retire Frontdoor McGraw contributed 2 key power play assists but gets the blemish in the stat line with a -1. The same problem hit Taro Eichelele and William Goddard.
Halifax out shot the Mammoths 28 to 19 and out hit them 31 to 14. For one game it didn't matter. It doesn't always have to make sense.
