Game 130: Montreal Militia @ Vancouver Whalers

VANCOUVER, BC - Enforcers are generally dismissed as non-factors on the ice, a hit man for hockey if there ever were one. The Militia came into Whaler territory with this mentality and neglected one person: Ieuan Llewellyn. The Welsh Welterweight brought pain to the road "warriors" through 2 destructive hits, 2 penalties for agitation's sake, and 2 goals to bring the Whalers the victory 3 - 1 over the Militia. Unfortunately, the forward with the hot stick is not rewarded with the 1st Star of the Game at the stadium, as Vancouver's backstop Maximillian Wehner posted a 96.6% save percentage on 29 shots and kept the game in check for the hometown team. This sort of loss brings about a mentality check for the Militia, while the Whalers get a boost of optimism knowing they were the better team.

TURNING POINT OF THE GAME

Llewellyn's first goal was in quick response to the Militia's first goal. While Ieuan didn't technically score a game winner or a game tying goal, this goal that effectively tied the game turned the whole script. Within minutes, the Militia were taking penalties and though no powerplay goal came out of the situation that period, a Ryan Vas penalty 5 minutes after that goal resulted in a disadvantage that gave Ludwig Koch Schroder a chance to give the hometown heroes a lead for the first time. They would never give that lead up.

Llewellyn putting in work on the top line with Ross and Owen. I think adding his grit and physical play has benefited all three. Llewellyn's great defense helps the line out a lot as Owen is a pretty poor defender, and the offensive prowess of the other two helps Llewellyn out in the offensive zone, as evidenced by his 2 goals on the night.

In a tight Whalers victory Llewellyn will deservedly get the headlines, along with Wehner in net, but I think Jon Ross and Brynjar Tusk deserve special mention as well. Both of them had two assists on the night and were +2, and both contributed on the defensive end of things as well, blocking shots. Real nice team effort from the Whalers to get a lead in the opening frame and keep it.

Hockey is a team game, so it's hard to always pin a loss on one or two guys from the losing team, but I think it's worth mentioning that Jason Forbrook had a weak performance playing a lot of minutes as a winger on the second line. He was kept off the scoresheet and was -2, and while he did get four shots off, you'd expect him to, given he didn't do much of anything defensively and was on the ice for 21:22, with 4:10 of PP time.

In fact, that second line really struggled all night for the Militia. Johnny Watson and Brendan Kennedy did more in the defensive counting stats than their linemate Forbrook, collecting four hits and two blocked shots combined between the two of them, but they were also both -2. Watson didn't see a ton of ice time, perhaps due to the coaching staff being disgusted with his performance in the faceoff circle. Watson was only 5/13 on the draw- not a good look. This loss started a string of them for the Militia, which has put a damper on their strong first half.

There's talk in the Vancouver LR celebrating Llewellyn cracking the top 60 in scoring now. He's proving that he can be more than a hitter in the SMJHL. Hamilton may have a solid two-way player at number 33 overall in the S31 draft.

What the fuck happened out there Montreal? You're better than this! I mean, to get beat out by the mother fucking Whalers?

The game started out so well with potato man picking up the game's first goal and putting the Militia in front early on.

You know how long that lead lasted? Six. Seconds.

And of course the winning goal was scored before the period was even through. How can you let this one by? Where's the defense? Where's the goaltending? Come on, Montreal.

Three Stars:

With a great performance from the whalers as they head towards the latter part of the season they swept the 3 stars with Ludwig Koch Schroder receiving the 3rd star, The whalers are a team fortunate to have lots of firepower on their backend as 3 of their top 5 scorers are D, Schroder continued this trend with the game winning goal and 3 hits tn this game.

Ieuan Llewellyn the second star had a big night with 2 goals for a player who is more known for his physicality as he leads the whalers in hits and is top 5 in the whole league. Tonight he showed his offensive skills as well as his usual toughness with 4 pims and 2 hits, if he can continue to develop his offensive game he could become a real threat.

Lastly the first star was none other than Maximilian Wehner, Wehner had an outstanding .966 save % allowing only 1 goal out of the 29 Montreal shots. Wehner has had an average season so far consistently in the middle of all goalies when it comes to stats, but hopefully for the whalers after this performance he can keep it up and become the top goalie in the league.

STARS OF THE GAME

3rd Star: This one's going to Jon Ross. It's really closely tied to the 1st Star, but that's a debate for another day. For now, let's focus on Ross's accomplishments tonight. He was the (2nd) most successful centreman, winning 56% of his draws on the night. He went +2 with 2 assists - one for both of Ieuan's goals. Ross has been Vancouver's go-to guy since was first drafted in S29.

2nd Star: We're going with Ieuan Llewellyn. He only nudged Ross out as 2nd star due to his proficiency in goal scoring. Ieuan lead the team in penalty minutes - which is normally a bad thing, but not in this situation. Ieuan tried to fire up his team throughout the game, and even scored the game tying goal six seconds after Montreal scored their only goal. Llewellyn went 2 goals and +2 to reveive this second star.

1st Star: This should be pretty clear - Max Wehner. Sure, goals were scored, but Maximillian kept Vancouver in the game. He kept his head on a swivel to keep them in the game. He may have given up the first goal, but after that, he was perfect. Max stopped 28-of-29 shots to pick up his 17th win of the season. If Vancouver is going to make it to the Four Star Cup Finals and take home the championship, they're going to have to rely on Max's superior goaltending.

Here's something that I truly want to know. What the hell kind of speeches did those coaches give in the first intermission?!? The shot total from the first period was 21-11! 21 shots in a period??? That's bananas. Its more that some teams have in an entire GAME. 32 total shots is ridiculous. But then whatever happened in the locker rooms that intermission worked, as both teams only allowed 5 shots a piece in the second period. 10 total shots. One less than Montreal had alone in the first period. That's quite the defensive adjustment on both sides.

Everybody is talking about him, but the man of the hour is still Ieuan Llewellyn. In a "John Scott in the All-Star Game" performance, he was deserving of the first star for sure. What a game from the big guy. This is what makes hockey great if you ask me.

Wehner gets the goalie credit, but i'd like to make a nod to Stephen Harris too. He saved 29 of 32 shots himself, and was amazing in the first period. Vancouver very easily could've been up 5-1 just after the first alone with how they were peppering him.

My Unsung Hero of the game? Brynjar Tusk. Not known for his offensive prowess, he quietly set up 2 of the Vancouver goals, played just under 20 minutes of game time, was a plus 2, and still managed to get in a hit and two big shot blocks, one of which came off a Jeziak deflection in the second period that was heading into the goal if Tusk wasn't there. That kept the game 2-1 and the momentum in Vancouver's favor. Not bad at all.

The Unsung Heroes - The Fourth Stars

Brynjar Tusk (VAN), 2 assists, 1 hit, 2 block shots, +2

On the first Whalers goal, Tusk got the puck off the John Ross faceoff win and skated in over the blue line before finding Ieuan Llewellyn with a pass. On the game winning second goal, Tusk and the Whalers kept the pressure on the Militia in the Militia zone through a line change as Tusk and Schroder passed the puck back and forth until Schroder let the shot go for the game winner.

Stephan Harris (MTL) 29 saves from 32 shots - (0.906), L, 14-8-3, 60:00 minutes

Harris took the loss, but played well enough to keep his team in the game on most nights. He faced 21 shots in the first period alone and kept Montreal within a goal at that point. Montreal was pressing the play in the third period, eventually out shooting the Whalers 13 to 6. But a Ryan Vas pass was broken up by Alex Mbb and the play went the other way. The Whalers dumped the puck into the Militia zone and controlled the play until Llewellyn eventually scored his second goal of the game with 7:06 remaining.

Goalie Matchup
[Image: g23tvaeu.jpg]
At first glance Wehner should totally win this matchup but once you take a closer look you can realize that the gap between these 2 certainly gets smaller and smaller. Wehner dominated the save percentage but he allowed a ton of rebounds. and a lot of them were actually bad rebounds , lucky for him none of them directly led to a goal. Harris rebound performance was better overall he allowed almost 50% less rebounds while facing a tad more shots. They both allowed the same percentage of rebounds but the volume was just way higher for Wehner.
So overall I think Wehner still gets the nod but it is very close.
