Buchesner not happy with Bjornsson’s play

Texas Renegades coach Matthew Buchesner has done an admirable job of not publicly showing irritation or frustration, which he calls the “F-word,” during what has fast become a challenging season.

But some of that appeared to leak out of him Friday, when a question was raised about goalies Christoffer Bjornsson and Georgette Pel and whether the last 5-some games of the season would be a “competition” between the two to see who plays the majority of the games.

Buchesner was mindful that Bjornsson has played in 41 games and Pel in 6, and that Bjornsson allowed five goals on 28 shots Wednesday in the 6-5 shootout loss to WInnipeg. Bjornsson, who recently had issues adjusting to a starting role in Portland, has a 3.03 goals-against average in his 41 games and a .898 save percentage.

“Well, you’ve got to push,” Buchesner said. “One guy has played 41 games. Christoffer has played 41 games and was poor in his last outing, let’s not kid ourselves, right? There were 28 shots, five went in. Plus being decimated in the shootout. Not good enough. You look at his numbers in the league, they’re not good enough.

“So when he gets in another game, you better play. You better earn some respect from your teammates. Your teammates are out there working their bag off. You better get some saves and a timely save at the right time wouldn’t hurt.

“That’s a little bit honest, eh? I just looked it up. You look up any goalie who has played 40 games in the Simulation Hockey League and the top 14 in save percentage, I know who’s 14. There’s 14 teams. Not good enough.”

Buchesner ended the media scrum by glancing down the hallway, in the direction of Bjornsson's distant locker stall, and saying, “Make a save.” Or something like that. Maybe an extra word in there. But the point already had been made: the coach was not happy with the player.

For the record, Pel was scheduled to be in net Friday against the Calgary Dragons at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

The Gades will have Jack Durden at forward, Buchesner said. Durden has played most of the season at the back end, but a recent trade led to him being moved to the forward position in the teams top six.

The lines at Friday’s morning skate had Geoffrey Allen with Liam Kinsler and Rick James, Evandrus Jesster centering Jack Durden and Conklin Owen, and Alexander Charlyb'y at center with Beau Bent and Michael Burrows.

Kinsler, called a “warrior” by Buchesner, will be playing his 700th career game.

The defensive pairs were Vladimir Lidstrom/Lord Vader, Cody Black/Andris Bukss, Kristoffer Rudd/Vladimir Lidstrom

“I really liked our game in Winnipeg and I want to play the exact same way the rest of the year, to be honest with you,” Peters said.

With one exception: the goaltending.
