Game 32: Montreal Militia @ Prince George Firebirds

Game thirty-two would feature two of the top teams from both the Western and the Eastern Conference facing off. Due to a scheduling quirk, both teams would play one another on back to back nights but instead of a home and home series, both games would be played in Prince George, the home of the Firebirds. Looking to extend their winning streak to 6 games, Prince George hopes that their fortunes would be better against Montreal with whom they have struggled against this season. Montreal was all over Prince George in the first period, outshooting them by a 15-6 margin and completely dominating them in each and every facet of the game. Rookie Elias Lindstrom, who just returned recently from a 25 game suspension, scored his second goal of his season eight minutes into the first period. Ryan Strathairn and Jack Dodds got on the scoresheet with assists on Lindstrom’s goal. Just over a minute later, Montreal would go up by two. Michael Walker scored on the powerplay after a Kristy O’Sullivan high-sticking penalty. Tim Elliot and Ryan Strathairn would provide the assists but this was truly a full team effort as every player on the ice touched the puck at least twice before it hit the back of the net. Montreal would just pile on the pain as they scored again three minutes later thanks to Art Vandalay’s fourth goal of the season. Justin Hiemstra did most of the work on this one by holding onto the puck despite fierce opposition from the Firebirds defensemen and eventually found Vandalay wide open as the Firebirds were caught puck-watching. Things didn’t get much better for the Firebirds in the second period as Montreal made it four to zero just fifteen seconds in. Surprising double-digit goal scorer Hylytyr NoRetornable potted his eleventh of the season. Elias Lindstrom got his first multi-point game of his young season as well with the primary assist and steady centerman Travis Jeziak got the secondary assist. The third period was much of the same as Jack Dodds made it 5-0 on the power play just over four minutes in. Jeziak won the faceoff directly back to Dodds who unleashed a clapper on net that beat everyone including backup Dean Melanson who came in to relieve Stephen Harris after the fourth goal. Things would go from terrible to straight up shit as Tim Elliot would score shorthanded. Tim’s 10th of the season from Srathairn and Walker had the home fans booing the Firebirds as they couldn’t find a way to be Prince. Finally rookie Xander Green would put a band aid on the seeping wound that was this game with his sixth of the season with a little over four minutes left to play. Not much to say about this abomination of the game for Prince George other thank Thaddeus Prince was brilliant, saving 30 of a possible 31 shots. Militia 6, Firebirds 1


Game 33: Montreal Militia @ Prince George Firebirds

Prince George coaches, management and their fans we’re looking for a response tonight against the same team that absolutely annihilated and embarrassed them last evening. Luckily for the Firebirds, it’s just one game and they are almost guaranteed a playoff spot so it’s time to start building chemistry and working on the little parts of the game in order to prepare themselves for the playoffs. Prince George got off to an absolutely dreadful start as they were outshot in the first period by the widest margin of any team this season. Stephen Harris was forced to make 14 saves in the opening twenty minutes compared to Thaddeus Prince who only saw one, single, puck for the entire period. Harris however kept his boys in the game by stopping all fourteen. The second period was much more balanced but Montreal got off the snide first as Alex Reaper scored his fifth goal of the season. Rookie Vesa Perhonen and Jaylor Toast were credited with the helpers. Prince George answered back nearly 5 minutes later thanks to Karl Hertzberg’s 11th goal of the season. Prince George needs to lean on their big guns in order to come back from that absolute destruction that happened yesterday and they are doing so as Caelan Fearghal and Teemu Sirius got the two assist on Karl’s goal. Unfortunately, Tim Elliot would give Montreal the lead once again just over one minute late on a beautiful play by the Montreal Militia top line. Olli Ojala and Michael Walker absolutely picked apart the Firebirds defense and while they were reeling, Tim Elliot slipped into an unmanned/unguarded zone and made no mistake from just over twelve feet out. Prince George, much to the enjoyment of their fans, would tie the game up with just over a minute left in the third period to send this one into overtime. Smirnov Light Jr. was “johnny on the spot” here as Hertzberg unleashed a shot on net that produced a juicy rebound for Light to slam it home. That goal, on the power play, was also assisted on by Teemu Sirius. Prince George completely bossed the overtime period holding Montreal to zero shots and only losing possession once. This, coupled with some tired legs on the Militia, led to the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the extra period. Teodors Cukurs scored his 13th of the season from defensemen Tapper Kottbulle and Caelan Fearghal. You can tell how much this win meant to the boys and all of the fans in attendance. Stephen Harris rebounded from a poor performance last night to stop 24 of 26 shots which equates to a .923 save percentage. Firebirds 3, Militia 2 (OT)


Game 34: Prince George Firebirds @ St. Louis Scarecrows

Prince George were looking to keep up their winning ways and start another nice win-streak as they traveled to St. Louis to face the Scarecrows. Despite what the season record between the two team’s states, St. Louis has vastly improved as the season went on thanks to very active members within the locker room as well as a few key free-agent signings to help bolster this young roster. The game would start off with a lot of good chances for both teams but a lot of inopportune penalties would lead to the game bogging down a bit as there were lots of tired penalty killers out there which lead to a shortening of the bench. The second period was much of the same as both teams looked a bit gassed for whatever reason. The home team got on the board first however at the eight minute mark thanks to stud prospect Viktor Vorkamfer’s twelfth goal of the season. Fletcher Carric, another high-end prospect and Anatoly Yanovich were there to provide the assists. Prince George answered back almost exactly eight minutes later, with about four minutes left to play in the period, thanks to a Xander Green snipe. Noted more for his playmaking ability than his scoring, Xander Green absolutely ripped this one into the back of the net much like a sniper would. Jean Girard and Declan Reilly were credited with the assists however this one was all Green as he made his own space and finished with a ban. The third period was all Scarecrows as their crowd was loud and proud egging them on to find the goal that would give their team the lead. A shot disparity was definitely present as Prince George only managed four shots on net to St. Louis 12. Unfortunately for the home crowd, their yelling and screaming did not work as this game went to OT. In OT, both teams had a plethora of good chances but couldn’t convert. Prince George actually rang one off the post in the extra period but couldn’t put the rebound home. In the shootout, Stephen Harris decided to shut the game down and absolutely robbed every single Scarecrow shooter. Teemu Sirius deked the shit out of rookie Jimmy Wagner and scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Firebirds the win. Both goalies played incredibly well in this one, particularly the rookie Jimmy Wagner who is much less experienced than Harris but faired very well against a high-flying Firebirds team. Firebirds 2, Scarecrows 1 (SO)


Game 35: Prince George Firebirds @ Colorado Mammoths

With a mini two-game win streak on the line for the Firebirds, who are deadlocked with Kelowna for the Western Conference regular season title, the Prince George Firebirds would enjoy a day off and hit a few dispensaries in Colorado before playing the Mammoths. Rough start for the Firebirds in this one as Colorado got on the board first thanks to Teddy Kesler’s tenth goal of the season. You can tell that some of the Firebirds may have sampled in some of Colorado’s finest edibles before the start of this one. Zinaida Titova and Dante Gallo, stud prospect of the Buffalo Stampede, did most of the work on this one as they totally bamboozled the Firebirds defense leading to Kesler having all kinds of time to score. Things would go from meh to bad when Serj Kovalchuk would score his third goal of the season with just over five minutes to play in the period. Zachary O’Ryan and Asvard I’m not spelling that last name were credited with the helpers. The second period started with a bang as Kristy O’Sullivan managed to find the back of the net a minute and a half in. After some good D to D passing which caused the Colorado defense to open up and push out, Kristy O’Sullivan found a soft spot in the D and Reilly found her and she made no mistake from a great scoring opportunity. The Mammoths weren’t impressed though as they took a 3-1 lead just over a minute later thanks to Lukas Muller, from Maverick O’Dooley and Colton Hagan. They would stretch that lead to four goals to one on Teddy Kesler’s second goal of the game. Zinaida Titova again assisted on a Kesler goal with the other assist going to Tord Yvel. Prince George would try to finish the period on a high note and would do so through Xander Green who is turning into a bit of a sniper for the boys from BC. Kristy O’Sullivan has herself a multi-point evening yet again as she had the lone assist on the Green goal. Prince George would fight back to within one goal with Teodors Cukurs 14th goal of the season just four minutes into the third period. Chris York, who’s chasing Teodores Cukurs for the team lead in goals and Isaac Cormier-Hale would register the two assists on that one. Teemu Sirius would take what would prove to be a costly penalty right after Cukurs goal as Colorado would score on the ensuing man-advantage thanks to rookie Vratislav Zybnek’s 5th goal of the season. Maverick O’Dooley and Tord Yvel both completed their evening with multiple points thanks to that goal. The goalies struggled in this one as Prince George didn’t get many pucks on net and Boeing had trouble saving the ones that did while Stephen Harris saw a ton of rubber and struggled with his rebound control all night. Mammoths 5, Firebirds 3


Game 36: Halifax Raiders @ Prince George Firebirds

The Eastern Conference leading Halifax Raiders were up next for the Firebirds as they looked to bounce back from a tough divisional loss to Colorado. The Firebirds have done well up against the strong raiders squad but the arms race in the Eastern Conference means that this Raiders team is a bit stronger than what the Firebirds have seen previously this year. The first period was slow going as both teams combined for just 11 shots on net but eventually the deadlock was broken as the Firebirds fourth line came to life. Taemin Gede scored only his third goal of the season just over eleven minutes into the first period. Noah Stevenson and Isaac Cormier-Hale would garner the assists on this one as Gede pounded the puck home after a few bad rebounds by Max Smith-Frey. Prince George would continue their steady play and dominate the Raiders in the second period, especially in the SOG department by getting ten shots on net to the Raiders three. A couple of silly penalties taken by Raiders players resulted in the puck hitting the back of the net. First Karl Hertzberg scored his 12th of the season from an Isaac Cormier-Hale feed who got the puck from Smirnov Light Jr. off of a faceoff win. Then rookie Dani Forsberg, who is turning into a deadly power play specialist, would get his fifth goal of the season just over two minutes later. Bumped up to the first power play, the line of Forsberg, York and Cukurs paid dividends again as all three guys got their name on the scoresheet with Forsberg’s goal. Halifax would continue to get heavily outshot as Prince George would get 13 shots on net to Halifax’s 6 in the third period. However, Harris left a juicy rebound which lead to Halifax breaking the shutout as Niklas Flower scored his 11th goal of the season. Frankie Latta and Solaire Azarov we’re both credited with an assist but it was Flower who capitalized on Harris’ mistake. The game would end there with a victory for the Firebirds as Harris, who didn’t see much action, helped his team to victory once again. He only saw 13 shots the entire game and stopped twelve while Max Smith-Frey for the Raiders saw 30 shots and stopped 27 of them. Smith-Frey’s team really let him down in this one as he played a brilliant game but couldn’t get any offensive support. Firebirds 3, Raiders 1


Game 37: Detroit Falcons @ Prince George Firebirds

Prince George, who is still chasing Kelowna for the number one seed in the Western Conference playoffs welcomes in the Detroit Falcons who are rumored to be interested in greatly bolstering their team for a cup run. While it hasn’t necessarily happened yet, the Falcons will be looking to shred through the Eastern Conference playoffs like they did last season however, they have to make the playoffs first and the East is still totally wide open. Prince George started off this game well enough in the shot department by outshooting the Falcons 13 to 6 however Prince George players would account for 11 penalty minutes just in the first period. Things would get quite testy and eventually the rookie Nick Dupuis would drop the gloves with Sami Sirius after an altercation in front of the net after the whistle. Great bout between two pretty big dudes and eventually the refs separate them. No instigator as it’s clear that both parties wanted this fight and have been looking for it for a few minutes. Smirnov Light took an interference minor thirteen and a half minutes into the game but it was the Firebirds who would capitalize, short-handed, on some Falcon mistakes. Chris York would score his 13th of the season on the penalty kill. Ever-steady on the back-end, Caelan Fearghal and Isaac Cormier-Hale would get the two assists on York’s tally as they were able to combine and help each other flip it out of the zone to a waiting York who took it all the way to the house. Tapper Kottbulle would get the monkey off his back and score his first goal of the season at the 17 minute mark. Jean Girard and rookie Xander Green would be there to draw all the attention while the typically-defensively minded Kottbulle snuck up into the slot area and unleashed an underrated shot on net that managed to trickle in. The second period saw the Falcons take advantage of some Firebirds mistakes but Stephen Harris was 100% up to the task and kept his team’s two goal lead intact. The third period would start with a quick power play for Prince George as Roddy Hawkins would get sent to the box for two minutes for tripping. Dani Forsberg received the puck from Teodors Cukurs directly off the faceoff, made a nice move, and put his team up by three goals with a sweet wrister that went between the lower pads and the blocker. Stephen Harris would ride out a fairly easy third period and get his first shutout of the season stopping all twenty six shots that came his way. Anderson for the Falcons didn’t have a bad game saving 33 of 36 but his team in front of him just couldn’t get anything going offensively and were constantly plagued by ill-timed penalties. Firebirds 3, Falcons 0


Game 38: Prince George Firebirds @ Montreal Militia

Prince George would be looking to make that three wins in a row as they travelled to Montreal to face the red-hot Militia. The Firebirds have had a ton of problems with the Militia thus far this season as Montreal has seemed to have their number since the start of the year. This game would prove to be one of the most even affairs of any game this season. The most exciting thing that happened in an incredibly even first period was an insane fight between Michael Walker and Smirnov Light Jr. This is the third time this season that Michael Walker has gotten into a fight while playing the Firebirds. Can you say “you salty bruh?” Anyways, the fight ended up being pretty much a tie despite both players going at it as hard as they could. The period ended with Prince George firing nine shots on net and Montreal firing eight on net. The second period was awfully dull as essentially nothing happened besides one holding penalty assessed to Karl Hertzberg of the Prince George Firebirds. Montreal narrowly outshot Prince George in this period by a tally of 10 shots to 9 shots. The third period started off exactly as Montreal and their fans would have hoped as rookie Vesa Perhonen would score his fourth goal of the season after an unbelievable individual effort from Alex Mbb to set Perhonen up with likely the easiest goal of his life. Prince George would keep battling back though and eventually they got the tying goal with a little under four minutes to play in the third period. Smirnov Light Jr. who has been all over the ice tonight, took a feed from Teemu Sirius, beat two defensemen, and roofed it much to the dismay of the home crowd who thought the victory was in the bag. Heading to OT, both teams looked like they didn’t want to give up that 2nd point and played very cautiously, leading to very few shots on net and even fewer actual opportunities. Onto the shootout we go and Chris York scored right off the bat for the Firebirds. His goal was answered by Tim Elliot’s goal for Montreal as we headed into a sudden death shootout. After a flurry of saves and shots just simply missing the net, an unlikely hero in Tapper Kottbulle emerged for the Firebirds as he scored in the 7th round of the shootout to give the Firebirds a win. Both goalies played exceptionally well in this game with Harris making 28 out of a possible 29 saves and Thaddeus Prince making 27 out of a possible 28 saves. Tough loss for the Militia but it’s a great win for Prince George who has extended their winning streak to three. Firebirds 2, Militia 1 (SO)
