Balancing Points Across Skaters - S40
#1

Okay, so the old title was a bit too generous. However, this is still a lot of fun to do. As I did for preseason, I took the stats of all skaters and assigned point values to them. To date, I still have not accounted for face-offs, but what I have is still, I believe, the best formula for determining total contributions of all skaters.

There is a change this season. In preseason, I penalized skaters for ALL penalties. However, a fighting penalty is quite different in that it takes the opponent off the ice as well. So this all, I didn't count fighting penalties as negatives or positives.

A complete list of the scores, along with everything that counts toward it, can be found here. For grading purposes, this was 258 skaters with 34 cells per skater, or 8,772 cells. Of those, a little over 4,000 cells are formula cells I devised to arrive at the final values or information I had to look up and not just copy/paste.

Now, some results.

Defensemen benefit from this formula far more than forwards, as forwards already get points for more of their contributions than defensemen. Forwards, on average, lost 1.0001 points each. Defensemen, conversely, gained 1.976 points each. Bubba Nuck benefitted the most from the formula, with 7.97 adjusted points added. Gunnar Rask gained 1.25, the most of all forwards. Dakota Reid lost 5.18 adjusted points, John Grossman, Jr lost the most of all defensemen with -2.58.

Based on rank changes, here are the skaters who were, perhaps, the most underrated if you were only looking at points:

1) Bubba Nuck +31 spots
2) Tommy Salami +31
3) Jack Tanner +30
4) Liam O'Callaghan ® +29
5) Roman Augustus +23
6) Tatu Mäkelä ® +21
7) Noctis Caelum +20
8) Ben Turska +20
9) Matthew Leetch +19
10) Gilfred Alfredsson +18

Conversely, here were the top 10 most overrated:

1) Dakota Reid -49
2) Sinn Nolan -47
3) Sterling Slaughter -40
4) Patrick Kilgore -37
5) Stefan Digrio -37
6) Brett Kennedy -33
7) Smirnov Light Jr. -24
8) Corey Bearss -21
9) Timmy Barlow ® -21
10) Vasily Horvat -20

Let me know if you have any questions and I hope you enjoy.
