An incensed Zach Evans spoke to reporters during Winnipeg Jets training camp on Sunday, responding harshly to allegations of doping levied towards him and fellow Russians, including Jets teammate Pietra Volkova.
"It makes me sick to wake up this morning and read this shit," said Evans. "First, the entire premise of the media is a complete laughingstock, as if we just suddenly 'got good' in the past season or two. It's been four seasons since I was a league MVP. If anything, I'm old news, not this breakout player."
"Secondly, most importantly, the insinuation of any wrongdoing on our part is complete unfounded and reckless," Evans added. "I have no idea where this came from. I have no idea why this is coming out now. It's like someone just woke up with a bad case of verbal diarrhea and were given a platform to speak out publicly."
Evans also added that he finds the source of the accusations particularly puzzling.
"I find this coming where it came from particularly interesting," Evans said. "One, because this German reporter implies Russia is just struggling mightily at the international level as if we didn't beat Germany twice in the most recent IIHF."
"Secondly, I know this gentleman has connections with the Montreal Royals of the GOMHL," added Evans. "And my good friend and comrade Zinetula Koprivov recently signed a contract extension there. Why he would jeopardize that relationship with such haphazard behavior is, honestly, confusing to me. I'm sure there will be repercussions, though, and he will have to answer for those."
In typical fashion, Evans couldn't resist adding a bit of humor in his closing remarks.
"Maybe I should start using steroids," Evans laughed. "I might not be on the third line this season if I were on the juice. Maybe that's where I fucked up."
