Here Comes The Draft

Wowzers. Season 1 of my career sure did fly by. It seems only yesterday that I was drafted 6th overall in the SMJHL draft, and it was an amazing experience. I haven't been this excited in quite a while.

But, up next is an even bigger adventure; the SHL draft.

I'm not entirely sure what to expect, as the SHL draft is a completely different beast than the SMJHL draft. SMJHL wants people that will stick around for more than a season, and people that are going to know how to build players.

The SHL draft is about bank accounts, name recognition, friends, and who will be loyal and super active. I'm very interested to see where a lot of people go and of course, find out where I will end up in the draft.

Before I get to that, I want to just talk a bit about my outlook on the SHL. My previous player knew where he wanted to go after being drafted already, and that kind of hurt him a bit. It was a pain to get from NEW to WIN to TEX. I upset some people, but I know that I did what I needed to do to stay active and happy during my time on the site. I was a loyal Renegade for the rest of my career.

So far, the plan is to give whatever team drafts me a shot. I might stay there if things are good, I might leave if I get bored or feel complacent. I've been promised by a couple of teams that the locker room is a great place, but I feel like that's always been said. I'll need the proof. But, I'm willing to give it a try.

As I said before, I had no real desire to play anywhere specific during my first run. I didn't know people other than those on my SMJHL team, or those that made themselves known by being renowned members of the site. This time around, I think I have an idea of where I would like to go, other than back home to Texas. I know that’s an extremely unlikely prospect with the way the picks have fallen, and I’ve come to terms with that. I still have an idea of where I’d prefer to land.

Let’s look at the first round. (Disclaimer: I did this myself, so I doubt the first round is entirely accurate for order. I also had no idea where expansion teams went, so… I put them behind the top 3 teams.)

So the order is:

1 - Steelhawks
2 - Chiefs
3 - Riot
4 -Stampede
5 - Specters
6 - syndicate
7 - Dragons
8 - Rage
9 - Stars
10 -  Panthers
11 - Jets
12 - Wolfpack
13 - Chiefs
14 - Riot
15 - Steelhawks
16 - Dragons

I personally don’t know everyone, and can’t decide for myself on where people will fall. I do have a couple of ideas, but that’s all they are… ideas.

At the First Overall pick I can see Nikolai Evans being drafted first once again. He’s still super active and working hard to earn that spot.

At Second Overall, this pick HAS to be ArGar. Borromini Cannellini will not be on the Whalers long, and will go back to Minnesota, his one true home. I can’t see a world where the Chiefs don’t have him, and they’ll use that second overall pick to draft the future of their team.

I see myself going at number 7 to the Dragons. I liked our talks, and can see them using that pick on me. If not, I think I drop to 10 for the Panthers to grab, or to 16, where the Dragons get me with the last pick of the first round. It’s either that, or another team takes a shot and hopes they can sweep me off my feet.

I can see the Rage drafting Jerry Mander at #8. He just fits the team.

Again, this is all speculation, but it might work out this way. I have no idea where I’m really going, and no idea what GMs have in their heads this time around. All I know is that it will be exciting for me, and this huge draft class.

Second overall would have likely been me, but Minnesota traded their 2nd to Hamilton in a 3-way trade.
