Spartan Gibbles S46 Draft Rankings

(This post was last modified: 02-17-2019, 01:22 PM by SpartanGibbles.)

I wanted to take an in depth look at the massive S46 SHL draft class. With this much talent to hit the league as well as 2 new expansion teams, this draft has the opportunity to mold the next 10 seasons of the SHL. I'm going to look in depth at the Top 10 and give my choices up to pick 100. My ratings are based on TPE and Stats from last season and the playoffs. No preference to recreates versus first generation players. I will also be giving my take on the actual results in a part 2 later this week.

1. Monkey D. Luffy - @TnlAstatine - This skilled center is my pick for first overall. Luffy was drafted by the new SMJHL expansion team, the Letherbridge Lions. Since arriving, Luffy has made an immediate impact on the team's performance. Luffy is leading the draft class in TPE with an impressive 305 total. This player is an offensive dynamo while not being a defensive liability. Luffy tied for 3rd in rookie scoring in his first season with 15 goals and 16 assists for a total of 31 points. Luffy also tied for first in the league in shorthanded goals, marking him as threat for special teams. His defensive work was nothing to scoff at either as he tied for 8th in league hits taken. Luffy also did well in the faceoff circle with a 49% win rate on 1249 faceoffs taken. Sadly Luffy was not able to shine in the playoffs as the teams inexperience lead them to a 1st round exit. I think that Luffy would be an amazing talent for any team to grab and will bolster their offense and increase scoring.

2. Kit Smeb - @kit - Hailing from Korea, Kit Smeb is my choice for second overall in the SHL entry draft. Kit was drafted by the Detroit Falcons in last seasons SMJHL draft. Kit is currently ranked 4th in TPE for their draft class(tied with 2 other players). Kit is a goal scoring winger a with a wicked shot. Kit scored 26 points in their rookie season with 14 goals and 12 assists. Smeb proved their scoring touch as 7 of those points came on the powerplay. Kit had an impressive 16.09% shooting percent for their rookie campaign. This was the third best on their team for players taking at least 15 shots. Kit also had a fairly successful playoff run with Detroit reaching the SMJHL Finals. Smeb netted 6 goals and 5 assists over 18 games. I think that Kit increases their draft rank by being a top scoring talent with an incredibly high ceiling. Kit would be a valuable addition to any team looking to increase their scoring power immediately.  The one negative I can see with Kit is their low endurance. This can be overcome with sheltered minutes if brought up to the SHL immediately while the player works on increasing the skill. If kept in the minors, they will continue to dominate as they round out their skills.

3. Borromini Cannellini - @ArGarBarGar - My choice for third overall in the draft is center Borromini Cannellini of the Vancouver Whalers. Cannellini is a talented scoring center, preferring to be labeled as a sniper. While not as good at shooting as my previous pick, Cannellini does have the stats to predict a high tier scoring threat in seasons to come. Cannellini's rookie season was not as impressive as one would hope. They registered 18 points with only 5 being goals. This stat is slightly troubling for a pure goal scoring center but I feel it is more of a fluke than a prediction of seasons to come. Cannellini is currently second in rookie TPE with 304. This high skill ceiling makes the player a highly sought after prospect. Cannellini  had a good season in the faceoff circle with a 45.81% win rate on 954 draws. Cannellini is also a strong skater who is hard to knock off the puck. This will allow them to keep the puck in their own zone as they work for a goal. Cannellini had a much better playoff performance with 10 points in 12 games. 7 of the 10 points were goals which showed a return to form for the young player. Cannellini did not make any of the leagues top 10 lists sadly, but has not flown under the radar of GMs. Cannellini's biggest weakness is the same as Kit's, endurance. With the already massive commitment to improving their stats, this should be less of worry as Cannellini's talents are well rounded.

4. Guy Zheng - @goldenglutes - For my 4th overall pick, I went with the British defensemen. Zheng was drafted by the Kelowna Knights in the entry draft. They fall more on the offensive side of play with a specialization in generating points through individual scoring and setting up teammates. Zheng made an impressive impact on the scoresheet in Kelowna. Scoring 31 points in their rookie season tied Zheng for 3rd in rookie scoring. the most for a defensemen. Zheng did have an impressive 51 shots blocked during the season. Zheng did seem to have a string of bad luck, registering a -14 plus/minus for the season. Zheng's post-season was not impressive as they failed to show up on the scoresheet. This can be attributed to Kelowna being swept in their only playoff series. Zheng's biggest weakness would being their low strength. They really need to hit the weight room in the off season to make their blue line scoring a deadly threat. I think Zheng is a solid addition to any team that is looking to bolster their blue line scoring and powerplay. I predict that Zheng will be the first defensemen taken in this draft.

5. Michael Scarn - @Trautner - My #5 pick comes from the Czech Republic and currently plays for the Colorado Raptors. Center Michael Scarn is another great sniper in this years draft class. Scarn's focus on scoring is impressive as they did not become a defensive liability. They currently are tied for 3rd in rookie TPE with 300 total. While a talented player, their draft stock lowers with such a high amount of snipers available in the draft. Scarn scored 19 points in their rookie showing comprising of 6 goals and 13 assists. This low amount of goals is hopefully not indicative of seasons to come with the players raw talent. Scarn had a great season on the faceoff dot with 48.25% of their 543 draws being wins. Scarn seems to be a very well rounded player for the talent they poses with no glaring weakness outside of checking. If paired with a talented playmaker, this player should shine on any team. Scarn had a decently successful post season with the Raptors as they scored 11 points. With only 2 goals during the playoffs, it may be worth Scarn's attention to look at filling roles outside of goal-scoring.

6. Perry Morgan - @Flareon4043 - My second defensemen and #6 overall pick in this years draft is Perry Morgan of the Halifax Raiders. Morgan is an offensive d-man who focuses more on passing and keeping the puck out of the their own zone. Morgan tallied 14 points in their debut season in Halifax. While not the most impressive in scoring, they did make massive defensive contributions to the team. They registered 89 hits leading their team by over double of the next player. They also blocked an impressive 47 shots for the Halifax goaltenders. This season was a rough one for Halifax which I believe is the cause for the lower stats of this player. Morgan did alarmingly have the second most penalty minutes in the league with 89. This could be due to their willingness to make big hits on the opposition. Morgan did not have a particularly impressive post-season as the Raiders were eliminated in the second round. They registered 6 points in their first playoff push.  Morgan's biggest weakness is their strength. This lack of power could be why they have not been able to score many goals as their shots will not have as much oomph as they come from the blue line. Morgan appears to be a solid addition to any D pairing looking to add a physical presence.

7. Gordie Boomhover - @gordieboom - Number 7 goes to the left winger from the Netherlands, Gordie Boomhover. Gordie is the first talent mentioned from the Season 45 SMJHL Champion St. Louis Scarecrows. Gordie has similar talents to the snipers already mentioned with the upside of playing on the wing as opposed to center. This allows him to forgo focusing on faceoffs in favor of his other strengths such as scoring and skating. Boomhover had a decent rookie season on the Scarecrows in which he 25 points in 50 games(12 goals and 13 assists). Gordie seemed to score more goals than most of his contemporary snipers leading to my choice to slot him at #7. He had a great 13.33% shooting percentage during the season with 6 goals coming on the powerplay. Where Gordie truly shined was the playoffs. Gordie had 11 points(6 goals and 5 assists) on a very good Scarecrow team and was a vital part in their championship push. He scored at an impressive 17.65% attempts during the post season. Gordie will be a great addition to the team that drafts him as he continues to do what he does best; score goals.

8. Kalvins Zvejnieks - @Gobbles - Next up at number 8 is center Kalvins Zvejnieks of the Detroit Falcons. Zvejnieks is a strong power forward with a good defensive playstyle. They would fill the role of shutdown center on any team that chooses to draft them. Zvejnieks does not lack offense either as they scored 19 points during the regular season. The majority of Zvejnieks' points were assist with only 3 goals scored. As such they did not find themselves on any of the SMJHL's top 10 lists this past season. Zvejnieks is a different pick this high up as they will definitely allow their linemates more scoring opportunities due to their play. This player would make an excellent addition to many teams penalty kill and could one day be the teams best penalty killer. As expected of a shutdown center, they won an impressive 51.72% of their faceoffs. They also saw a high number of faceoffs this year at 1218. This talent could be a key to future playoff runs from Zvejnieks. Zvejnieks was no slouch in the SMJHL playoffs either. They netted 1 goal, 11 assists and had over 20 hits in 18 games. While Detroit did not win the championship, this was an impressive outting for Zvejnieks. They also continued their excellence in the faceoff dot with winning 52.83% of a team high 477 faceoffs. The biggest weakness is Zvejnieks' inability to finish a shot on their own. Properly supported by their teammates, they should thrive in the SHL.

9. Brennan Kennedy Jr - @bk1689 - My penultimate player review goes to my number 9 pick Brennan Kennedy Jr. Kennedy was drafted to the Lethbridge Lions, one of the two newest SMJHL expansion teams. This defensemen is a strong puck mover who will shore up any blueline. The regular season was rough for Lethbridge but Kennedy managed to net 5 goals and 20 assists(10 points on the powerplay) for a strong rookie campaign. More impressively, Kennedy racked up 60 hits and shots blocked over the season. Kennedy ended tied for 6th in the league in shots blocked. Kennedy's most impressive stat has to be his 1,112 minutes played which ranked him 8th overall in the league. Despite Lethbridges quick exit from the playoffs, Kennedy still managed to net 2 assists and 8 blocked shots. While Kennedy's biggest weakness is his strength, they player has made tremendous efforts to shore up that area of their training. I think that Kennedy will be a powerplay quarterback for many seasons in the SHL for the team that decides to draft them.

10. Karlstraße Scholz - @karlssens - My final draftee analysis at number 10 is the Kelowna Knights defensemen Karlstraße Scholz. Scholz shares many skills with the last pick but with a stronger focus on scoring. Scholz is a much more offensively driven player scoring 9 goals and 22 assists in the regular season for a total of 31 points. This lead Scholz to a tie for 3rd in rookie scoring for the season.  Scholz impressive stats continue as they lead the league with 80 blocked shots and ranked 4th in minutes played with 1,143. The one downside in Scholz's play is their weak checking skills. This is an odd weakness for a defenseman of their caliber but could be overcome with more training before hitting the SHL. Kelowna's quick exit from the playoffs stopped Scholz from truly showing what they were capable of doing in the post season. They still scored a single goal, assist, and 11 shots blocked in their efforts. I think Scholz has a massive offensive upside to their game but are less well rounded compared to the previous pick. They should still shine on the scoreboard for the team that ends up drafting them.
