Detroit Lose Heartbreaker

![]() Banned Banned ![]() (859 Words) The Detroit Falcons came into Montreal looking to get on track after coming off a win against one of the leagues best. They had left the Anchorage Armada on a floating ice berg after beating them in a thrilling shootout 3-2 just 24 hours ago. Even though Detroit had the top pick in the draft and looked great on paper they have been struggling at the start of the regular season. Coming into the Militia's Arena with a record of 2-5 is a bit disappointing but that is no reason for alarm just yet. The felt good about their chances when questioned and losing back in Detroit to the Militia in the season opener left a bad taste in their mouths. That game was a high powered offensive shooting gallery compared to this display of pure defense. I had heard some reports about the rookie Padraig Sarantez being upset about Montreal Policy when it came to selecting the Captain and Alternates. Something about a feeling of prejudice towards rookies and what they are allowed to take part in compared to the older members of the team. These personal problems or feelings did not seem to affect his play on the ice though as he received a pass from Olin O'Dowd and made an amazing pass between two Falcons right onto the stick of Kristoffer Svensson who ripped the puck right past Hasek on the short side for the first goal of the game! This was Svensson's third on the season and both O'Dowd and Sarantez picked up their second assist of the year. O'Dowd and Sarantez are the Irish side of what is being called the Primary Defense now that consists of two Russian born players along with Swedish born Stolp Skottson. Something about the colors of red, blue and green being primary colors with computers compared to red, yellow and blue primaries for painting. The point is that this defense is starting to look really good at keeping pucks out of their own zone. A minute later after that celebration, Sarantez got called for slashing. When I think about Sarantez I think about the movie, "Kill The Irishman" which was no easy task. Sarnatez did his time in the box but nothing came of it. Unfortunately Detroit did get on the board at 7:52 of the first period and Espen Knutsen Junior picked up his 5th goal of the season. Josh Driver got his first assist but Raino Kyllonen picked up his seventh which really showcases how well he can pass the puck. It has always seemed that he is a pass first kind of guy. Detroit ended up getting called for two minors in the second half of the period but the Militia were unable to make anything of it. They went into the locker rooms tied at one as fans stood up and clapped. The second period was purely defensive. It was also riddled with penalties and Sarantez seemed to playing with a chip on his shoulder. Perhaps the inability to be named Captain or Alternate of the team was upsetting him more than I had first thought. He got called for boarding and the play was what you might consider dangerous in these modern times. Interestingly enough nobody was able to convert on any of their power plays. The crowd quieted down as the puck was going back and forth between zones and the game was shaping up to be a chess match played in the neutral zone. The two Irishmen of The Primary Defense struck again at 9:21 assisting Keegan Angello with his second goal of the year. Not much is known about this player from Ontario as he has kept quiet for about two months now. He just shows up and does his work and goes home. He doesn't seem to like to talk about it that much. Even though the Fans were losing control with sheer happiness and lunacy he just gave a nod to his teammates as he skated back to the bench. Detroit was all over Marc Hagan who has just been unstoppable this season so far. Unfortunately for him Detroit silenced him this game as he was unable to convert any goals or assists. Anello's goal proved to be the game winner and the Montreal Militia bounced back with another win after their disappointing loss in Colorado. They finished this game 2-1 and as we all know you have to win these types of games if you want to climb the standings on your road to winning the cup! Rookie Zarley Zalapski played another fundamentally sound game for 12:47 of his time on the ice. You can tell he cares more about keeping the puck out of his goal first compared to trying to be offensive. Even though he is listed as an Offensive Defensive player I am starting to notice he cares more about defense over offense. He registered one hit in the game but had many poke checks and kept pressure on Detroit as they struggled to get clean entry into the Montreal Zone. |
