(All stats are from SHL season 46).
TLDR: Corsi is important. STL/TO is probably not? Pass-first builds commit more turnovers but also get more steals.
First of all, I’d like to say that when I started my
advanced stats project, I thought it would be something interesting for people to look at and maybe someone would write an article or two about it, but I definitely didn’t think it would be one of the factors in award voting.
This is why I want to do some research to find out how certain stats should be interpreted and whether they mean what we expect.

For example, some players are great at driving possession and some are absolutely terrible at it. However, corsi depends A LOT on linemates. Let’s say we have this lineup
x – A – x //55% corsi
x – x – x // 43% corsi
First line is great, the second line is bad. Let’s say the GM decides to spread the scoring and moves player A to 2nd line:
x – x – x //51% corsi
x – A – x // 48% corsi
Player A improved the second line but his linemates were so terrible, he couldn’t drag them to positive possession numbers.
In this case you might assume that player A can't drive possession but he clearly makes everyone around him better.
So corsi needs more context. This is a topic for another article because I don’t have all stats available to me yet (namely, I want to add relative corsi next season and see if it’s useful).
But let’s see if positive corsi actually means more scoring. I already touched on this
here but I kind of botched that.
Here’s another attempt:
CF% vs EVPTS60 (even-strength points per 60 minutes), or P60.
There is definitely correlation here.
Players with a CF% < 50 average 1.39 points.
Players with a CF% > 50 average 1.72 points.
76% of players above 2.00 points finished with a positive CF.
(By the way, you can guess who the 3 players on the far right are).
So, the first takeaway from this article -
players with a good CF% score more .

That was quite a digression but anyway, today I wanted to talk about steals and turnovers.
There are 3 types of situations that are recorded as a steal / turnover:
1. Pass by
Player A (Team A - Turnover) intercepted by
Player B (Team B - Steal) .
2.
Player A (Team A – Turnover) loses puck. Puck Retrieved by
Player B (Team B – Steal) .
Sometimes Team A retrieves the puck and this situation is not recorded as a steal/turnover.
3.
Player A (Team A – Turnover) is hit by
Player B (Team B – Steal) and loses puck. Puck Retrieved by Player C (Team B).
Same thing.
I want to reiterate that this is no doubt different from how STHS counts giveaways / takeaways. It’s just a stat I came up with based on available data since our STHS version doesn’t have GA / TA.
The question is – is this relevant at all?
We’ve established that positive corsi is good. Let’s compare STL/TO ratio and CF%.
It seems logical to assume that positive STL/TO would lead to a positive CF but this seems pretty random to me.
If you look at top 25 players, 17 (!) of them have a STL/TO <= 1.00:

I guess the next takeaway from this article –
unless I’m missing something, STL/TO doesn’t mean much, if anything at all .
I could end the article right here but let’s get to the reason I started writing it in the first place.

I calculated Turnovers per 60 minutes (TO60) | Steals per 60 minutes (STL60) | SC – PA difference for every player.
TO60 vs SC - PA
Some players have a 40+ difference between scoring and passing which seems very extreme.
Anyway, clearly, pass-first builds commit more turnovers.
That seemed obvious from the start. Now here’s the interesting part.
Pass-first builds also steal the puck more often

Why? I have no idea but it’s true. Top 25 players STL60 and their SC – PA:

So yes, pass-first players commit more turnovers but they also get more steals, often resulting in a STL/TO ratio above 1.00.

Aaron's a traitor to regular stats with all this advanced nonsense!
One comment I'd make is i am not that comfortable, on the basis of those graphs stating that pass first are more likely to have To/STL. The correlation seems very minor and the stacked towers or differential perforce at +10/-10 suggest to me there is something else in play.
Hypothesis: PH / PA levels?
Not sure.
BUT just cause I disagree with the analysis doesn't stop it being great. Cheers for doing these. And looking forward to future ones.
