A Blooming Friendship

Since Kelowna was unable to make it to the finals and win the championship this year Vent had more time to relax and meet up with friends during the long offseason. Flying back to home to the Czech Republic Vent was able to hang out with DeMaricus Smyth a forward for the New Orleans Specters. Smyth and Vent have known each other for a long time since playing for their country together. When Vent came over Smyth's house he was able to see a beautiful garden that was filled with different types of flowers and foods around Smyth’s house. From what Vent could see he saw pumpkins, tomatoes, watermelon, onions, jalapeno, sweet peppers, cucumbers, raspberries, and strawberries. Vent asked Smyth if he could take him on a tour of his garden and talk to him about how he got into gardening.  “When I first got my own house, I wanted to grow weed for myself and my friends.” Smyth explained. Apparently, Smyth found a love for gardening and has grown his garden every year it seems. Currently, the garden is about 1,200 square feet but Smyth says he plans to make it larger the coming year. What fascinates Vent is that Smyth does not sell the crops that he grows. He mostly gives them away or uses them for himself. Smyth went on to explain how fun Halloween is and having homegrown pumpkins at his disposal.

Around Smyth's house, there were tons of beautiful flowers that contrasted and complimented well with the different colors. Vent was able to see snapdragons, lilies, lilacs, roses, tulips, daisies, Irises, buttercups, Azaleas, and Balloon flowers. Vent was impressed with how many different types of flowers that Smyth was growing and how he had gotten some that don’t usually grow in their native homeland. Vent asked Smyth what his favorite flowers were and how he had gone about growing not only food but also flowers. “I’m a big fan of tulips and marigolds, but I love just growing things in my free time. It’s a very relaxing hobby and helps me clear my mind and get rid of stress from the real world and from hockey.” Vent and Smyth spent most of the day talking about the garden that Smyth had, and Vent was trying to get tips from Smyth so he could start his own garden. “Start small” Smyth explained. “Getting a large garden too fast and not knowing how to garden efficiently will end up being too much to handle at once.” Smyth went on to talk about how his mother first got him into gardening by having a garden of her own when he was a small child. “She would make me help her water the gardening and help plant seeds in the ground. I always hated it growing up but now I’m very thankful for what she did for me.” Smyth said. Vent remembered his own grandma used to garden a lot when he was home and how she always made him help her and would teach him the different types of flowers she was growing. Vent asked if Smyth could come to his house tomorrow to help him start his own garden for his own use. Smyth and Vent took a little car ride to their local gardening store to get supplies for Vent.

The two boys decided to get a garden hoe and some nice gloves for Vent. Then went to go get some seeds for Vent to make their own garden and grow whatever he wanted. Vent wanted to grow some flowers to start out instead of trying to start with crops that are more work to do. So, Vent bought some snapdragons, roses, and a few lilacs to start his small garden. As Vent and Smyth left the store, they hit up a restaurant and had dinner together where they talked about gardening and a little bit about the season that had just ended for the two. After dinner, Smyth and Vent headed back to Smyth’s house were Smyth explained to Vent on how much time and responsibility the garden is going to be for him. During the season Smyth cannot take care of his garden since he is over in America, so he has a garden that comes and takes care of it for him when he can’t. He gave Vent the gardeners number for him to use and they planned for a time for Smyth to come over and help Vent begin his garden. They talked about what Vent was going to do with the crops, if he began to grow some, on what he would do with the crops. Vent thought about it and decided that he would give them out to friends and family just like Smyth does. Vent didn’t need the extra cash and it was a nice gesture to give someone you care about a gift that you made. Before Vent headed home, Smyth gave Vent some of the crops that Smyth had grown in his own garden. Vent was handed some watermelon, pumpkins, and sweet peppers and they looked so fresh and delicious. Vent thanked Smyth for these gifts and told him he had a great time hanging out with Smyth and talking about something other than hockey.

As Vent headed home, he began to plan where he was going to put his new garden. Pulling into his driveway Vent went to his backyard and plotted out 200 square feet plot to begin his own garden.  The flowers were going to be planted in front of the house and then the crops were going to go in the back. Vent took out the food that Smyth gave him and put them on his counter and took out the flowers and put them in a vase with water so they can make it through the night and not die before tomorrow. Vent headed to his room and climbed into bed and it took him a while because he was excited to begin a new hobby that seemed very interesting and fun to him. Vent is glad he has a friend like Smyth because they are able to get away from all the hockey talk and talk about things, they find interesting and be able to share a common interest between each other.
