Delver Fudgeson Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Draft

For the past several years, Delver Fudgeson has been working at becoming a professional hockey player. From the time he was born, he was trained as an athletic entertainer. He was an acrobat until he was 11 years old. Any sports he played outside of that were just for fun. His parents were both circus performing acrobats, and brought their young son into the act. Delver had fun doing that for a while, until his parents were both killed in what was probably a freak accident, no one really investigated. The incident was spotted by a billionaire owner of a hockey team, who took Delver in and made him shift his athletic talents to the ice. The way young Delver saw it, he had two options: either become a crime fighting vigilante by night, while being a rich kid who got whatever he wanted during the day, OR he could become a hockey player. He obviously attempted the former, but was told by his new owner that he was going to become a hockey player or live on the street. Easy enough choice. Anyway, after several years of learning how to play hockey at a competent level, young Delver Fudgeson decided he didn’t like the life he was living. Having everything paid for him, not having to work a day in his life. It was right around here when he made the worst decision anyone could make, and walked away from his billionaire guardian/mentor/owner. Delver now plans on carving out his own future, with absolutely nothing to fall back on. A circus level education and not a penny to his name. And no family, you know, because of the deaths that probably weren’t actually an accident despite what you may have heard earlier.

Part 2: The SMJHL

Delver Fudgeson was hanging out in a coffee shop, attempting to use their bathrooms without buying anything, when he spotted a hockey player sitting at one of the tables. After he was caught trying to lift the man’s wallet out of his pocket, he had to think fast. Asking about how he got into professional hockey, he was told about the SMJHL, and the upcoming draft. While at first Delver was just looking for an opportunity to get out of there, he slowly began paying attention to what he was being told. Using his new information about this junior league, Delver did his own research into getting into it, and declared himself for the draft. While he would love to thank the player who told him about this and essentially gave him this opportunity, Delver didn’t get his name, and spent more time looking at his wallet than his face. If he got a look at his wallet, he could probably figure out who it was. Not important. What is important, is Delver can now focus on his training. He is confident that if given a shot, he will be capable of impressing and rewarding the team that takes a chance on him. Delver has done his interviews with all of the teams, and is patiently waiting for Monday. Prep work for the draft, outside of practice included an attempt to ask former players what he can expect. Delver got the phone number of long retired SMJHL hero, and current model: Tony Flow. He was quoted as telling the young prospect: “How did you get this number?” and “Don’t call here again”. Good stuff, you can really learn a lot from the old guard if you just put in the effort. All the youngster really needs to know is that the draft is an exciting time, and he needs to work hard if he wants to make an impact.

Part 3: The Player

The playstyle that Delver is most interested in utilizing is that of a goal scoring defenceman. He doesn’t plan on ignoring his defensive responsibility, but understands that for a D-man to truly be effective, they need to play a complete game. He is going to listen to coaches and veterans alike and attempt to hone his skills to become effective at this style. While he is currently in need of some serious training and experience, he is willing to put in the effort to make his idea of what he wants to be come true.
