Analyzing Important Games of Hernadivic's Young Career

Aron Hernadivic was selected with the last pick of the second round in the S49 SMJHL Reddit Draft by the St. Louis Scarecrows, joining first round selection James Ronlain, and later being joined by Ass Captain Sasha Dangelchek, who was selected shortly after Hernadivic. Since being drafted, Hernadivic has been one of the higher earning TPE players in his class, consistently ranking in the top 12 of his class in regards to TPE.

Hernadivic had a poor rookie season, even by rookie standards, putting up subpar numbers throughout the whole season, helping waste the final season of Nicolaj Muller and Mika Kandinsky's SMJHL career. Hernadivic had a breakout season in his sophomore year in the juniors, putting up a shit ton more points, and tying for the league lead in assists with Jagger Fouquette.

I will be going maybe not game by game, but notable achievement by notable achievement for S49 and S50 to compare where Hernadivic was last year to this year.

SMJHL S49

Game 1: Montreal Militia vs. St. Louis Scarecrows
We had a monumental game for game 1, with it being the league's season opener, the Crows Home opener, and Hernadivic's SMJHL debut. Hernadivic debuted on the third line for St. Louis, playing on a wing centered by Colton Strudwick and opposite of right winger Sasha Dangelchek. The Crows deployed their third line as a more defensively-oriented line, hoping to minimize their chances of hurting their own team.

First period
At about the 3:30 mark of the first period, the Crows third line got their first taste of the SMJHL, hopping over the boards for an offensive zone faceoff against the Militia's top line of Gaspard Boone, Alexei Rykov, and Herry Morris IV. Unfortunately, Strudwick loses the offensive draw, and Montreal moved the puck into St. Louis' zone with a dump-in. Hernadivic was first back, getting to touch the puck for the first time. Unfortunately, his breakout pass missed its intended target, and everybody else, and an icing was called against St. Louis. on the ensuing faceoff, Boone wins another against Strudwick, and after a couple of turrnovers by each team, the puck fell to Boone, who capitalized to make it 1-0 for Montreal. Not a great start to his SMJHL career. Hernadivic had a few more shifts in the first period, and having settled himself done, didn't make another costly mistake, playing solid hockey.

Second Period
With the second period underway, the Crows third line didn't see the ice again until about the 3 minute mark, again with an offensive zone faceoff. This time, the Crows faced off against the Militia's fourth line of Hatter, Daly, and Ricky Bobby. Strudwick again loses the draw, and Montreal is instantly off to the races. Sarantez to Bobby, Bobby cross-ice to Daly, Daly carries the puck into the offensive zone, leaving it for Sarantez. The puck is just flying between Militia players. Sarantez gives it to Hatter, who lets it rip, but puts it wide. The puck comes out to Ricky Bobby, who slides it in to make it 3-0 for Militia. Another tough shift for the Crows rookie third line. Like with the first period, after getting their first shift jitters out of the system, the Crows third line settled themselves back down, not making any more costly turnovers.

Third period
Nothing of note happened for the Crows third line in the third period. In total, Hernadivic had a debut to forget, finishing with a -2, no shots, no hits, no points, etc. Fat zeros on the board for the young rookie out of Czechia, in a little over 11 minutes of icetime.

Day 9: Game 36 - Montreal vs. St. Louis Round 2
First Period
Montreal heads to St. Louis for their second match-up of the season, with Hernadivic hoping he can can bust out of his slow start to the season, and take revenge on Montreal for doing their line dirty in the first match-up of the season. This time around, the third line's first shift goes much better than their previous match-up, however, the period for the rest of the crows doesn't go so well, as they head into intermission down 3-1.

Second Period
The second period is a lot better for St. Louis, as they immediately get one back for St. Louis less than a minute into the period. For the third line of Strudwick, Dangelchek, and Hernadivic, it's an average period. They don't create too many chances, but they don't give up any either, up until the 18 minute mark. Coming on for a defensive zone faceoff, the Crows third line loses the faceoff, and is scrambling around in their defensive zone. Boy, have we heard this before. However, Flash Gordon intercepts a pass from Pokrywka intended for a Militia forward. and they're off to the races. Basil Magnicotta gives it up to Hernadivic, who carries the puck into the offensive zone and lets one go, but it gets blocked. Magnicotta picks the puck back up, and takes his turn shooting, but Hernadivic is selfish and tips it..... and it goes in! Hernadivic has scored has first SMJHL goal in his 7th game of the season. As a pass-first player, it is a bit of a shock to everyone that Hernadivic's first point is a goal and not an assist, but hey whatever gets the job done.

Third period
Nothing of note happened for the Crows third line in the third period. In total, Hernadivic had a much better performance this game against Montreal, helping forget his wretched debut. In total, Hernadivic finished with 1 goal, a plus 1, had two penalty minutes, and one shot in net in a little over 11 minutes of icetime, helping the Crows secure a 5-3 win over the eventual Cup Champs.

Game 77: St. Louis Scarecrows vs. Vancouver Whalers

Boy do we have a barn burner here.

Period 1
The first period started out with a bang for the Crows, as only six seconds after puck drop, Mika Kandinsky potted home his 6th of the season (Yikes). It didn’t end there, as St. Louis continued to apply pressure, resulting in the a couple of icings in a row from the Whalers. The Crows capitalized, taking a 2-0 lead just over 3 and a half minutes into the game. With Vancouver reeling, St. Louis went for the throat, and with some contributions from their new rookies, were up 4-0 less than 6 minutes into the game. Double Yikes. Strudwick and Phoenix got the first of their careers, making 3 and 4-0, with Hernandivic picking up his first helper on Strudwick’s goal. On Strudwick's tally, the Crows third line won a faceoff in the Whalers offensive zone, and maintained puck possession to tire out the Whalers. Gordon to hernadivic, to Magnicotta, to strudwick back to Hernadivic. Hernadivic finds a cutting Magnicotta, who then finds Strudwick alone on an island. Strudwick gets his first goal, while Hernadivic gets his first assist. At the end of the period, it was 6-2 for St. Louis.

Period 2
The second period is much like the first for St. Louis, as they're just doing whatever they want with Vancouver. Two more goals scored by Brusky and Muller means the Scarecrows have scored 8 already. out comes the Crwos third line again, just buzzing at the chance to score another. The Crwos have puck possession in the Whalers zone, getting the cycle going with the big bodies of Dangelchek and Strudwick proving tough to take the puck off. The puck finds its way to Hernadivic, who lets one go, only too seeit get blocked. However, Dangelchek has powered his way to the front of the net, and hammers home his first of his young career. Hernadivic gets his second helper of the game, meaning this is now his first assist of the season, as well as his first multi-point game of his career.

Period 3
The third period was slow, as both teams coasted to the end. Burzawa was able to keep a clean sheet this period, stopping all of the 7 shots he faced. Vancouver’s Reider manged to sneak away shorthanded, scoring the last goal of the game with just under 6 minutes remaining, culminating in a final score line of 9-4 for the Crows. Tough days for the Whaler goalie tandem, giving up 9 goals on 31 shots.

In total, Aron Hernadivic finished the season with the following statline:

8 goals and 6 assists as a rookie playmaker isn't ideal, but isn't the worst rookie season in the league. With a shot % that will surely come up next season, on top of earning more tpe, Hernadivic should have a bounceback second year and hopefully help the Crows have a better season in S50.

SMJHL S50

Hernadivic had a bit of a slip in the SHL S50 Draft, falling into the second round at 22nd overall, meaning he was leapfrogged by a number of prospects who were taken behind him in the SMJHL draft. Hernadivic, although is one of the higher earning left wings in his draft class, was the 8th left winger taken, 4 of which had lower TPE at the time of the draft compared to Hernadivic. (yes i know tpe isnt the only consideration but for the sake of this lazy article, it works). Playmaking wingers are just not as valuable as scoring wingers - marner should've taken note smh.

If Hernadivic picks up his scoring, he could be another steal for WBF and Tomen and the Buffalo gang. In fact, Hernadivic has seamlessly fit in in the Buffalo locker room, being an active participant, becoming a part of the Buffalo Stampede - Calgary Boomers beef, and having some suggestions for how to improve the league.

Let's check in and see how Hernadivic's second season went.

St. Louis kicks off their season on the road against Kelowna, looking to bounce back after an early playoff exit and a middling finish to the regular season. St. Louis lost a number of key contributors from the season before, specifically Nicolaj Muller, Mika Kandinsky, Noah Brusky, Lyle Odelein, and Basil Magnicotta. Nicolaj Muller was a SMJHL scoring champion multiple times, an MVP winner multiple times, as well as winning a number of other SMJHL and St. Louis team awards such as most dedicated. Muller was also captain of St. Louis, and leaves as one of the Scarecrow greats. Mika Kandinsky is another notable Scarecrow leaving the team, meaning St. Louis has lost two of its best players, 2/3 of its top line, and two people that have set multiple Scarecrow scoring records. Mika was also an assistant captain, and won multiple team and league awards, including best defensive forward. Not to be outdone, the Crows also face a bunch of attrition on their defensive group, losing three of their capped defenceman to call ups and to inactiveness. This will be tough for the Crows to replace. The crows also lose another assistant captain out of this group, meaning St. Louis will have 3 new faces on its leadership group.

Filling in all these shoes will be a number of rookies, as well as some veteran players and some people from the S49 class. With the Crows losing its top line, Hernadivic gets the move from the third line to the first line, joining Bruchevski's wing along with Barrett Blackwood. On the leadership group, Hernadivic has been named captain, with Barrett Blackwood and Sasha Dangelchek being named assistant captains of the Crows. The backend will face some challenges, as replacing these capped out players are S49 SMJHL Draftee Flash Gordon, as well as a bunch of new faces with rookies. Now we shall head into Hernadivic's second season:

Game 4: St. Louis Scarecrows vs. Kelowna Knights (Scarecrows Season Opener)
Period 1
Aron Hernadivic didn't get his first point of S49 until the Scarecrows 7th game of the season, with a goal in that game. As a playmaker, Hernadivic typically looks to pass over shooting, and so would like to see himself increase his assist totals to much more respectable levels - he didn't get his first assist until the Scarecrows 16th game of the year. In total, Hernadivic wants to have a much better individual year, and a much better team year. Hernadivic will be playing with some 425-capped players in Bruchevski and Blackwood, who like to shoot the puck, and so should see his assist totals skyrocket. Opening the year against Kelowna, the Scarecrows get off to an interesting start. St. Louis immediately wins a penalty, and immediately starts peppering Kelowna's new goalie Luca Del Vecchio. However, Kelowna withstands the penalty, and immediately responds to open the scoring 1-0. At about the 15 minute mark, Hernadivic makes his first mark on the game, ripping a shot on Del Vecchio that he saves, but spills the rebound. Fortunately for Kelowna, they were first to the puck, and take an icing. A couple minutes later, the top PP unit is back on the ice for St. Louis. Hernadivic brings the puck out of the defensive zone, leaving it for Blackwood to carry into the offensive zone. Blackwood finds a cutting Bruchevski as Kelowna is caught out of position, and all of a sudden its in the net. Hernadivic gets his first assist of the season at a much quicker rate than he did last season. In total, St. Louis outshot Kelowna 16-4, but head into the period tied.

Period 2 + 3
Unfortunately for Hernadivic, periods 2 and 3 dont go his way, nor St.Louis'. The second period sees the Scarecrows get outshot 21-14, and outscored 1-0. The third period was similar to the first, the Crows outshoot Kelowna 17-6, but get outscored 3-2, meaning they lose the opener 6-4 even though they outshot their opposition by double digits. The puck luck didn't go their way this game, but hopefully its not a sign of things to come. The Crows top line didnt perform well, only managing that one goal, while each of them finished a -2 in over 20 minutes of ice time. These numbers wont be getting it done if the Crows want to go deep this year.

Game 19: St. Louis Scarecrows vs. Kelowna Knights (Scarecrows 5th game)
Fast forward here to the Scarecrows fifth game of the year, Hernadivic is off to another slow start this season, unable to contribute to the Crows as they have gotten to a slow start with a record of 1-4. They better turn it around sooner or later or this could be another down season for the once proud dynastic franchise.

Period 1
St. Louis once again comes flying out of the gate against Kelowna, absolutely dominating play and peppering Del Vecchio with shots. This period goes much better than the previous game against Kelowna, as St. Louis outshoots Kelowna 11-3, and outscores them 2-1. Both Scarecrow goals come on the powerplay, with Hernadivic chipping in his first goal of the year. On the PP, Bruchevski beats Shepard in the faceoff circle, Hernadivic, coming in on his offwing from the right side of the circle, picks up the loose puck and lets a low wrister go that finds its way in between everyone's legs, sneaking past the screened Del Vecchio. The lid is finally lifted off the net for Hernadivic; hopefully he can start to begin playing like he deserves to be on the Scarecrows first line.

Period 2 + 3
Unfortunately for Hernadivic, periods 2 and 3 dont go his way, nor St.Louis'. There's something about this Kelowna team that St. Louis can't seem to crack. Hernadivic, although he scored on the powerplay, struggles again this game, bringing his linemates down with him. It seems as though Hernadivic is trying to hard this season to prove to Buffalo's GMs WannaBeFinn and Tomen that they selected another steal in the second round, and to prove to his peers that he is worth his lofty draft status. Perhaps relaxing and gripping his stick a little looser will see Hernadivic actually play up to his capabilities.

Game 34: St. Louis Scarecrows vs Lethbridge Lions
In the 7th game of Hernadivic's rookie season, he managed to put his first point on the board. In the 7th game this season, we'll see how Hernadivic played.

Period 1
In the first period of this game, St. Louis gets off to a roaring start, hammering Lethbridge in their own zone and earning a powerplay. The powerplay gets killed off, but St. Louis maintains possession of the puck in their zone. Hernadivic takes a shot low and hard as the coaches preach, which gets deflected by Bruchevski to make it 1-0 for St. Louis. Not much of note occurs for Hernadivic in the rest of the period.

Period 2
In the second period, the Scarecrows top line gets off to another good start. This line has really begun to pick up its play lately, and maybe they'll be able to take advantage and increase the Crows lead. On their first shift of the period, they can't seem to find their way past Tegernako. However, at about the 5 minute mark, the Crows are in the midst of a line change. Ronlain takes a shot, but misses the net, while Hernadivic picks up the puck. Aron gets knocked off the puck, but Bruchevski picks it up, finding Blackwood for an easy goal. This top line is ballin.

Period 3
Period 3 is nothing of note for the Crows top line, as they have already done their damage this game. The Crows get another W on the board and Hernadivic has his first multi-point game of the season. Hopefully he can keep it up.

Player Name              G  A  P  +/- PIM S  H  SB GA TA FO    MP    PP MP  PK MP
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aron Hernadivic          0  2  2  2  0  1  1  0  0  0  1/2    16:18  4:50  0:00

Hernadivic finishes with a multi-point game, somehow only had 1 minute in PIM, and finished a +2. Not bad.

Game 243: Halifax Raiders vs St. Louis Scarecrows
Here, we're going to fast forward to the Crows second last game of the year, a game against Halifax. St. Louis has had a tough season, with 8th place and a series against Kelowna looming on the horizon. St. Louis has switched its lines up looking for a spark to end the season and ignite what they hope will be a long playoff run. The new top line will be Jakub Bruchevski, Aron Hernadivic, and James Ronlain, while their second line is Yamamoto Mitsuharu, Barrett Blackwood, and their stud rookie Ruslan Zaporozhets.

Aron Hernadivic is on pace to finish as one of the league leaders in a variety of categories, such as goals, assists, points, powerplay goals, and points/20 minutes. A couple hot games to end the year and Hernadivic could have one of the best seasons in Scarecrow history.

Period 1
On the opening faceoff, Bruchevski wins the draw sideways to Hernadivic, who gives it up to Ronlain. Ronlain carries it into the zone and scores 4 seconds into the game. Good start for this new line, and good start for Hernadivic as he looks to make his way up the assist and point rankings. Halifax responds only thirty seconds later, and then the teams settle down. However, Hernadivic scores his 22nd of the year, with assists to his linemates, and has two points through the first period.

Period 2

The flood gates are truly open for this newly formed top line, as Ronlain gets two more goals in the second period, with assists going to Hernadivic and Bruchevski to make it 4 goals for the Crows, 4 goals for this line, and 8 assists for this line. Halifax literally is unable to do anything against these guys.

Period 3

Feeling left out of the top line goal party, Bruchevski scores his first goal of the game, 24th of the year, except he ruins it, as instead of his linemates getting the assists, the assists go to other Crows. Later on in the game, on the powerplay, former top liner Barrett Blackwood scores his 26th of the year, with the old top line hooking up to get the assists.

In total, Hernadivic finishes the game with 1 goal and 4 assists, as well as a +5, and manages only third star of the game - tough to hear that.

Player Name              G  A  P  +/- PIM S  H  SB GA TA FO    MP    PP MP  PK MP
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aron Hernadivic          1  4  5  5  0  6  2  0  0  0  1/1    18:27  2:22  0:03

In conclusion, Hernadivic in season 50 went absolute the fuck off. Although he didnt have a season as dominant as Jagger Fouquette, and didn't even lead his team in scoring, Hernadivic isnt talked about as one of the best SMJHL players, reflected in his draft statuses.

This season, Hernadivic overcame his slow start and exceeded his point total from his rookie season in only 17 games of action, where he managed to put up 15 points.

Hernadivic tied for the league lead in assists with 39.
Hernadivic tied for the league lead in powerplay goals with 8.
Hernadivic finished tied for 9th in goals with 22.
Hernadivic finished tied for 3rd in points with 61, behind Jagger Fouquette of Detroit, fellow Crow Barrett Blackwood, and tied with another fellow Scarecrow Jakub Bruchevski.

Not a bad season for the sophomore stud outta the Czech Republic
