Analyzing Each of the Scarecrows Seasons
St. Louis has fallen into a bit of a rut since the time of their three-peat, with them being eliminated in the first round of S49 even with a bit of a stacked roster. St. Louis will be undergoing absolute massive roster turnover this off-season specifically Nicolaj Muller, Mika Kandinsky, Noah Brusky, Lyle Odelein the Third, and Basil Magnicotta. Nicolaj Muller was a SMJHL scoring champion multiple times, an MVP winner multiple times, as well as winning a number of other SMJHL and St. Louis team awards such as most dedicated. Muller was also captain of St. Louis, and leaves as one of the Scarecrow greats. Mika Kandinsky is another notable Scarecrow leaving the team, meaning St. Louis has lost two of its best players, 2/3 of its top line, and two people that have set multiple Scarecrow scoring records. Mika was also an assistant captain, and won multiple team and league awards, including best defensive forward. Not to be outdone, the Crows also face a bunch of attrition on their defensive group, losing three of their capped defenceman to call ups and to inactiveness. Noah Brusky is getting the call-up to Texas after only his sophomore season, an unexpected call-up that'll leave St. Louis short of what would've been their #1 defenceman heading into S50. Lyle Odelein III is also getting the call-up to NOLA, where he'll join a loaded roster full of former crows like Nictox and Slash. Lastly, they also lose Basil Magnicotta, who is a capped out defenceman, but has exhausted his eligibility down in the juniors. St. Louis will be relying on a mixture of veterans, sophomores, and rookies to fill in the shoes of all of those that departed. The only remaining players from before the S49 reddit draft are Jakub Bruchevski and Barrett Blackwood, two 425-capped forwards that will be relied to put up huge numbers for the Crows. Joining these two players will be a good S49 core of James Ronlain, Aron Hernadivic, Sasha Dangelchek, and Flash Gordon. Hernadivic and Ronlain were both second round picks in the SHL S50 draft and will be capped at 350 shortly after the season starts. Sasha Dangelchek may not jump off the page offensively, but will play an important shut-down role as a checker and grinder. Flash Gordon will be the Scarecrows top defenceman, being the only veteran player on a completely revamped defence corps. Joining these S49 players will be a large crop of rookies, at all levels of the game, goalie, defencemen, and forwards. St. Louis took a shot on a young goalie last season, Shiqa Vitalievich, who they hoped could be their goalie of the future. However, Shiqa didn't last long as he went inactive and left St. Louis looking for another goalie in this upcoming draft. St. Louis solved this issue by taking Elizabeth Doyle, aka Evok, who is a goalie out of Ireland or England or the UK or whatever those nations are called. Evok has a long track record in this league, being a simmer previously, having a good player previously, and although she'll have some growing pains in her rookie season, she appears to be the Scarecrows answer for a good, active goalie for the next couple of seasons. Following taking Evok 5th overall, St. Louis was hoping former St. Louis alum Mitchell van der Heijden would fall to them at 15, however Anchorage had other ideas, taking him at 11. St. Louis needed defencemen, and went into the draft with some defenceman in mind, but with those in mind being selected before St. Louis picked, they went with best player available. This meant taking Ruslan Zaporozhets at 15, a sniper forward from Ukraine or somewhere, who declared for Czechia. Other players selected include Marian Elsner, a first-gen with vast potential, Luc Pierre Lespineau etc., an enforcer defenceman. St. Louis needs these players to develop on their back-end. St. Louis will be very reliant on their top 6 forwards, and will hope to outscore the opposition as their young defence and goalies grow and begin to reach their full potential. Here's how St. Louis' roster looked this season. Jakub Bruchevski @JaytheGreat498 TPE (425 Capped) Jakub Bruchevski steps into the 1C role left vacant by Mika Kandinsky. Bruchevski is a 6 foot 2 inch, 215 pound sniper hailing from the Russian Federation. Bruchevski is an S49 player, with strengths in scoring, face-offs, and puck handling, and has been one of the better centres in the face-off circle throughout his career. In S49, Bruchevski put up 27 points in 50 games, with a -10 rating, and will look to improve drastically on his numbers this season. This season, playing mostly on the top line, was much improved for Bruchevski. In 50 games played, Bruchevski put up 24 goals and 37 assists for 61 points, matching the previous Scarecrows record for points in a season. 61 points meant he finished tied for second on the Scarecrows with another point. He also was a +22, had 58 hits, and even a fight, showing he was unafraid to throw his weight around to stick up for his team. Bruchevski also had 4 game-winners this season, and in taking 1449 faceoffs, he won 53.76% of his draws. Bruchevski's stats meant he finished 7th in the league for goals - behind two other Scarecrows with 24, 4th in assists with 37, tied for 6th in points per 20 with 1.13, 9th in face-off percentage, 4th in plus-minus, tied for 4th in powerplay goals, and he ended the season on a 14 game point scoring streak. These numbers show Bruchevski was arguably one of the best players in the league, putting up huge point totals while also being responsible in his own end, completely stepping into the huge shoes Mika Kandinsky left behind. Yamamoto Mitsuharu, like Jakub Bruchevski, is also 6 foot 2 inch, 215 pound player, but is a playmaker over a sniper, and comes from Japan and not Russia. He has strengths in passing, defence, and puckhandling, with his checking lacking far behind the rest of his game. Mitsuharu is a recreate player from St. Louis Scarecrows General Manager, TML99, and is a member of the S49 SMJHL draft class, or more commonly referred to as the S50 SHL draft class. It appears as though Mitsuharu will be in the minors for a while, as he is not one of the higher earning players amongst his draft class. In his rookie season, the playmaker from Japan had a decent season by rookie standards. Mitsuharu played on the wing of the previously mentioned Jakub Bruchevski, with James Ronlain, another rookie player, on his other side. Mitsuharu, while playing about 19 minutes a game, potted 6 goals, and 17 assists; good for 23 points. Mitsuharu was a -12, and scored on 5.6% of his shots, unlucky numbers for sure. Mitsuharu, with a year of development under his belt, and playing with some more experienced teammates, should see his point totals and +/- increase. In 50 games this season, Mitsuharu put up 14 goals and 26 assists, good for 40 points in 50 games, scoring at a 0.8 point per game pace, a marked improvement from where he was the season prior. Additionally, Mitsuharu went from a -12 in S49, to a -5, displaying an alright jump in his defensive numbers, although St. Louis will hope to see this number increase in S51. He scored on only 10.6% of his shots, a good increase from his previous season's numbers, but still below league average. As a converted winger, Mitsuharu did alright on the faceoff circle, winning 47% of his draws. Additionally, Mitsuharu showed off a clutch factor, scoring 1 game-winning goal and 3 game-tying goals. All in all, St. Louis will be happy with the development path of Mitsuharu, and will hope to see this development continue positively in the following seasons. Barrett Blackwood @MrStennett425 TPE (676 TPE) Barrett Blackwood. The lone, active player remaining from the S48 and earlier era. Blackwood lost his draft's classmates to callups, but remained down in the juniors for one more go round at the cup and as a mentor to the young Scarecrows. Blackwood is a sniper from the United States of America, and is 6 foot 1, 190 pounds. This player is strong as a shooter, puckhandler and defense, and like the other offensive forwards across the league, is weak when opponents play physical against him. Blackwood was identified by the management team as one of the more valuable leaders on the team, and rewarded him by naming him first alternate to the new St. Louis Scarecrows captain. As this is his last season down in the Js, everyone hoped to send Blackwood off on a high note. In his previous season, Blackwood was on a line with certified Scarecrow legends Nicolaj Muller and Mika Kandinksy, and was often thought of as the third part to that all-star worthy line. While playing amongst the huge shadows cast by Kandinsky and Muller, Blackwood scored 47 points, 23 goals and 24 assists, showing off a balanced offensive game. Additionally, Blackwood was responsible in his own zone, putting up a +21. Blackwood will be flanked this seaosn by Hernadivic and Bruchevski, two budding offensive superstars that'll look to replicate what the Blackwood-Kandinksy-Muller line had last season. In S50, Blackwood put up great offensive numbers, even improving on his numbers from the season before. This season saw Blackwood put up 27 goals, and 36 assists, meaning he led the Crows in scoring with 63 points. In fact, his 63 points was good for second in the whole league, while his 27 goals was good for 4th, and his 36 assists was good for a tie for 5th. Additionally, Blackwood led all right wingers in scoring, was 6th in points/20, tied for first with 6 game winning goals, and even had a 6 game goal scoring streak. Blackwood set the new Crow record in points with 63, and had one of the best seasons in all of the SMJHL. Blackwood should be a contender for multiple awards, and might even win some hardware. Blackwood will be getting the call-up to Edmonton, so St. Louis will need to replace his all around offensive threat, and his two way game, huge shoes for someone on St. Louis to fill. Barrett will be missed dearly on St. Louis. Hernadivic is one of the most promising prospects in the league, and Buffalo, St. Louis, and Czechia will all hope he continues on his current developmental pathway. The 5 foot 10, 180 pound playmaker doesn't come in the mightiest size, but his play on the ice surely isn't lacking. With strengths in passing, skating, and puck handling, this playmaker sure knows how to contribute offensively, but will have to show he can shake off physical contact. St. Louis experienced a profound loss in leadership over this offseason, and the GMs had to turn to some new faces to fill in. For captain, they turned to the active Czechian, becoming one of the few sophomores in the league to be named captain. Hernadivic is a fun guy, and hopes to mentor his rookies to help them remain active in the league. Hernadivic didn't have a rookie season to remember, struggling in the first half of the season to do much of anything. As he became more and more familiar with the new ice dimensions, Hernadivic began to see his hard work pay off. Playing on the third line with fellow rookies Strudwick and Dangelchek, Hernadivic, a playmaker first and foremost, scored 8 goals, had 6 assists, good for 14 points, and was a -7. Not great numbers, but not terrible. Hernadivic, with his promotion to the first line, hopes to become even more of an offensive threat, while also becoming a strong two-way player. In S50, Hernadivic started slow, similarily to his rookie season. However, once he got going and lifted the lid off the net, all hell broke loose for the other teams in the league. Hernadivic, no matter the line combination, whether it be Blackwood and Bruchevski, or Bruchevski and Ronlain, was a massive offensive force, with much of the league not knowing how to slow him down. Hernadivic scored 22 goals, and had 39 assists, good for 61 points. This 61 points tied the previous Scarecrow record, set by Nicolaj Muller. Additionally, Hernadivic turned his plus-minus around, and finished as a +15. Great turnarounds compared to his rookie season. Compared to the league, Hernadivic tied for the league lead in assists with 39, was tied for 9th in goals with 22, second in left wingers for points with 61, tied for third out of all players for points with 61, and was third in points per 20 minutes at 1.29. Hernadivic also tied for the league lead in powerplay goals with 8, showing he is always a threat.. All in all, Hernadivic had a season for the ages, and is not commonly talked about like Blackwood and Fouquette are as one of the SMJHL's premier offensive threats. Another season like this one should change this narrative. GP G A P +/- PIM PM5 HIT HTT SHT OSB OSM SHT % 50 22 39 61 15 16 0 49 57 151 42 109 14.57% James Ronlain @Rankle 350 TPE (408 TPE) James Ronlain was St. Louis' first round selection in the huge Reddit draft class of S49, and has been as advertised since being selected in the top 10. James Ronlain is a big bodied sniper, 6 feet 2 inches tall, and 205 pounds. This American is the definition of a goal scorer, as he is extremely strong in scoring, handling the puck, and skating, while being afraid of physical play. Ronlain is insanely important for St. Louis, as he is one of the primary goal threats for the team during even-strength and on the powerplay. In Ronlain's rookie season, his draft pedigree and ability to put the puck in the net saw him starting out on the second line, with veteran centre Jakub Bruchevski, and playmaking winger Mitsuharu across from him. This line was a goal threat, and Ronlain had a good rookie season. James had 9 goals and 6 assists for St. Louis, making him the second highest scoring rookie on the team. With increased play time and continued development, Ronlain should break out for the Scarecrows this year. In S50, Ronlain began on the line with Dangelchek and Mitsuharu. He played well, but didn't really break out until the lines got rearranged, and he began playing with Bruchevski and Hernadivic. The chemistry Bruchevski and Ronlain developed the season prior, as well as Hernadivic being able to feed him the puck in his wheelhouse, saw Ronlain breakout in an extreme manner, having some extremely high scoring games in the second half of the season, including having multiple hat-trick games. Ronlain has 25 goals and 19 assists, good for the second most goals on the team and 4th most points. The majority of these points came in the second half, and St. Louis should expect similar results next season, as him and Hernadivic will likely be playing together again. Additionally, Ronlain didn't have an overly great shooting percentage for such a high level scoring threat, and so if that number rises, it wouldn't be a shock for Ronlain to put up 30ish goals in the upcoming season. Sasha is a pure defensive-oriented forward, and should be on of the league's premier shutdown, defensive, two-way forwards in the upcoming season. Sasha, like his Czechian brethren Hernadivic, is another of St. Louis' selections from the Reddit draft. He is 6 foot 3, 220 pounds, and is a strong, power forward. As a forward Sasha is surprisingly weak at scoring, but makes up for it by being a great checker, skater, and passer. With the departure of the Crows entire leadership group from the previous season, the GMs and coaches felt that Dangelchek should be one of the players to fill the big leadership gap, and thus was given the second alternate this season. With the departure of Barrett Blackwood, the first alternate, Sasha should step into that role as well, and continue to be one of the more friendly guys in the locker room. In his rookie season, Sasha played on the third line with fellow rookies Aron Hernadivic and Colton Strudwick. As they were all rookies, they did undergo some serious growing pains, and weren't always positive contributors on the ice. Sasha sruggled adjusting to the new rink/ice dimensions in the SMJHL, and seriously missed his homeland, and so his rookie season was a bit of a struggle. He scored 3 goals, and 2 assists, while being a -7. He wasn't afraid to throw around his body, with 59 hits in only 11 minutes a game of ice time. Sasha stepped up in S50, earning a role on the second line with James Ronlain, and Yamamoto Mitsuharu. Sasha had a much improved offensive season, potting 7 goals and 15 assists, good for 22 points. Sasha maintained his -7, which should rise as he continues to get comfortable in the SMJHL. Dangelchek was even more physical this season, just missing out on 100 hits with 91. Dangelchek was an important penalty killer, and with a shooting percentage in the single digits, should expect to see a slight jump in his goal totals next season. All in all, Dangelchek is a huge piece in the St. Louis locker room, maintaining the positive experiences shared in their as well as being a positive contributor on the ice. Dangel will play an even bigger role in this upcoming season, and the future is only looking up for this young Czech. St. Louis took the best player available at this point of the draft, taking a sniping winger although their forawards are already decently deep. Zapo is 6 foot 1 inch, weighing 200 pounds, and is a pure offensively focused player. Strengths in scoring, puck handling, and skating shows his offensive capabilities, however, Zapo is a little afraid of physical play. Zapo joins a loaded forward group in St. Louis but will be able to pick the brain of sniping forward James Ronlain, the playmaking mastermind Aron Hernadivic, and the all-around offensive threats of Barrett Blackwood and Jakub Bruchevski. Zapo started the year on the third line, with the top two lines being made up of more veteran players. Zapo started off really hot, with the vets in the locker room giving him a hard time for making everyone else look bad. However, St. Louis went cold, and the lines got reshuffled around midseason. Zapo was rewarded for his great play, and was promoted to the second line, playing with Barrett Blackwood and Yamamoto Mitsuharu. Zaps picked his play back up, and will be an offensive threat for the Crows going forward. In his rookie season, Zapo did a little bit of everything for St. Louis. As a rookie, he had 15 goals, 12 assists, good for 27 points. He was also a -9, not terrible for a rookie, but will look to improve his defensive game in his sophomore season. Zapo was the third highest scoring rookie, behind a defenceman and a forward, but was one of the most lethal goal scorers for rookies. Zapo's shooting percentage was okay, but as he is a sniper, should increase in his sophomore season, making Zapo a potentially even more dangerous goal scorer. Zapo's play and dedication to the SMJHL/SHL should see him being a high selection in the upcoming SHL draft, and a valuable contributor to St. Louis moving forward. Flash Gordon @twerkin4jesus303 TPE With the surprising call-up of Noah Brusky to Texas after only his sophomore year down in the minors, Flash Gordon, a mid-round selection in the SMJHL S49 Reddit Draft, will be relied on in St. Louis as their #1, shutdown defenceman. Flash Gordon will be relied on to play heavy minutes against the top opposition, and with an inactive rookie on his pairing, will have to do much of the work. Flash is a 6 foot 6, 225 pound defensive defenceman out of the Czech Republic, joining what should be a decent WJC team and a prospective future member of the senior IIHF team. With his long reach, Flash is able to play a defensively sound game that accents his strengths in defence, skating, and checking. Flash isn't much of a goal-scoring threat, and will need to improve his shot for this to occur. Flash was a late-round selection in the S50 draft as teams weren't sure of his love for the SHL. However, if he continue to develop his game, Flash could develop into one of the steals in the draft. In his sophomore year, Flash was relied on to huge minutes. Flash logged over 21 minutes a game on St. Louis' top pairing, getting ample special teams play, as evidenced by having over a 100 minutes of both powerplay and penalty kill time. In his minutes on the ice, Flash was a definite positive contributor, as he managed to score 4 goals, get 21 assists, good for 25 points, which led Scarecrow defenceman. He played a solid defensive game, carrying his partner to a hugely positive +/-, and he finished with a +17. One place Flash could improve is his discipline, as he took over 55 minutes in penalties. He is too vital to the Crows for him to be in the box so much. These numbers are all marked improvements over Flash's rookie season. Flash was a +14 in his first season, playing most of the time with either Brusky or Magnicotta, two capped players. He however only managed 10 points, so his 25 is a huge increase. All in all, Flash will be relied on to be the top St. Louis defenceman for at least the next couple of seasons. Flash had a great season that built off a decent rookie season, and St. Louis should hope to see a repeat performance. Luc-Pierre isn't as large as some of the players that have come through St. Louis lately, but is a terribly feisty spirit, unafraid to do the dirty work and put his body on the line. Standing 6 foot 2, and 209 pounds, the Canadian packs a mean physical package, strong in checking, fighting, and strength, good luck moving this guy off the puck. However, with a weakness in scoring, this bruising defenceman is best left in his own end. LPLL, as one of the few active defenceman on the Crow roster, has developed into a solid young prospect, although with the SHL having a phobia of physical players, he might be left behind in the upcoming SHL draft. LPLL, although a rookie, was required to play big minutes for St. Louis, and will likely see himself in a top-4, maybe even a top-2 role next season. Continued development on his defensive game, maybe bringing up his 70 overall defence, should see LPLL earn his coaches trust. This season, LPLL had 1 goal, 6 assists, for 7 points. Although he was a -10, much of St. Louis was minuses, so that isnt too terrible. This mammoth of a player took 106 penalty minutes, of which only 10! were fighting. He will need to boost his discipline if this enforcer wants to see his career continue past the SMJHL. He however laid the body 157 times, and helped St. Louis kill off over a 100 penalty minutes, showing that he can contribute positively to the team. Focusing on lowering his penalty minutes should see LPLL be an even more positive player, and will help St. Louis in the long term. As one of their core defencemen, it is important for St. Louis to not ruin LPLL's development, as he will likely be relied on for even more than the 17 minutes per game he played as a rookie. Elizabeth Doyle @Evok268 TPE Elizabeth Doyle, the fiery netminder from Ireland, was the St. Louis Scarecrows 1st round pick in the previous SMJHL draft, due to her high level of play in the Irish Minor Hockey Association. Doyle, standing at 5 feet 9 inches, and coming in at a light 176 pounds, is a hybrid goalie. She has strengths in style control, hand speed, and reaction time, but must work on her skating. Doyle has the weight of the franchise on her shoulders, and will come in to camp with a chance to win the starting job. Elizabeth Doyle will be thrown to the wolves in her inaugural campaign in North America, with St. Louis having such a young defense in front of the young Irish netminder. It'll be vital for the Scarecrows future that Evok turns it around and becomes the goalie they hope she can be. Getting into the season, Elizabeth Doyle started the campaign as the backup netminder to Marques Brownlee, a holdover from previous seasons. Brownlee and the Crows got off to a slow start, allowing Doyle to get her first taste of the SMJHL. After taking over for Brownlee, Elizabeth didn't look back, playing in 37 games for St. Louis, where she put up 16 wins, 16 losses, and 1 overtime loss. She managed to put up an 0.877 save percentage, as well as a 3.5 goals against average, great numbers for a young goalie with a young team in front of her. Doyle was also great at penalty shots, saving 3 of the 4 shots she faced. Brownlee, however, has seen his development go wayward, failing to reach the potential that the scouts once thought he had. Brownlee however, has been a veteran presence for St. Louis, and has continued to battle for the Crows. This 6 foot 3 netminder weighs a whopping 160 pounds. Brownlee has been in a fight for his job since being drafted to St. Louis, losing the starting role to a new rookie that was selected in S49, Shiqa Vitalievich. Competition is great for the betterment of the team, and so it came as a surprise to no one when Elizabeth Doyle was selected. In S49, Brownlee played 18 games, winning 4, and losing 11, 2 of which were OT/SO losses. He put up a middling 0.864 save percentage, and a 3.7 goals against average, numbers that STL will hope improve this upcoming season. In S50, Brownlee appeared in 22 games, of which he was responsible for winning 7, losing 7 in regulation, and 3 in overtime. Brownlee improved slightly from his previous seasons performance, as he increased his save percentage to 0.881, good for first on St. Louis, and had the same GAA as Doyle with 3.5.
