Anchorage drafting deep dive.

Probably the most enjoyable aspect of being a general manager at least from my perspective is drafting and by extension the other aspects associated with it. Thorough scouting is the lifeblood of any juniors team and striking the right balance of recreates and first gen players is a cornerstone in creating an active and positive locker room experience.

In my opinion the key to maintaining activity is keeping players and especially rookies engaged with each other and the alumni on a day to day basis. While I also believe that winning keeps people around the site despite what some users think this is really just an extension of how well you build your team. Simon is a cruel master and the best team doesn’t necessarily win the cup but without a well built team you more or less eliminate yourself from contention anyway.

While we haven’t had an explicit policy on drafting mainly first generation players, being one myself has meant that they are the people that I naturally drift towards in a scouting sense. The site can be a daunting place when you first arrive as well as the fact that recreates are more or less well known commodities so you are unlikely to pick up one that is going to be a high earner in the later rounds.

Over the course of the last nine seasons Artermis and I have put together a scouting sheet each season and assembled a few of the current and ex players to help us go through all the draft eligible players and find the people that we think fit with us as a team. In order to make this easier on ourselves during reddit draft seasons we opened up a “combine” server which proved to be hugely successful and while we didn’t go on to win the cup that season the main components in our 4 Star win came from that draft combine.

Outside of drafting the other most important way of acquiring players in the juniors comes through free agency and therefore we put a lot of emphasis on how we pitch ourselves as if you can convince a player to join you it is more or less like getting a free draft pick. With the implementation of the new budget system the battle for free agents among teams has become even more contentious.

Here I will be looking at all the players we have drafted since I took over the reigns of the Armada 9 seasons ago. As well as casting a glance over some of the more important free agents that we have managed to pick up over the seasons.

Season 45:

S45 SMJHL draft: First round, third overall
S46 SHL draft: First round, third overall (Tampa)

Oliver Cloutier, W. (Recreate)

TPE: 1339

Going against the grain with the majority of my picks I selected a recreate with my first ever pick. I actually traded up with Halifax to make sure that I would be getting Jenny and it is a deal that I would do 100 times out of 100. With 67 goals and 67 assists for 134 points in 200 games Cloutier was good enough for 8th all time point scorer in PGF/ANC history and 4th best of players with 200 games or less. On top of this Jenny is a top notch member of the locker room and has been the teams choice for Captain in the last two seasons. Jenny will leave a big hole when she goes up next season but the Armada’s loss is Tampa’s gain.

S45 SMJHL draft: Second round, thirteenth overall
S46 SHL draft: Third round, thirty fifth overall (Buffalo)

Johnny Sins, D. (First Gen)

TPE: 355

Second pick and first ever first gen went to Johnny Sins. Sins was super active for a new player and immediately took to the locker room and was a top earner TPE wise throughout his first season in the league. Lonny was accepted into law school and had to step away from the league which perhaps fortunately meant that the Armada got to keep him for all five junior eligible seasons. With 18 goals and 103 assists Sins ended up as fourth all time for points by defenders in Anchorage and Prince George history.

S45 SMJHL draft: Third round, twenty third overall
S46 SHL draft: Undrafted

Andris Dzerins, C (First Gen)

TPE: 223

My first big rip. Bsellis was really active in discord and had a great personality. Only lasted a couple of weeks after the draft though and left without ever being seen again. All in all not the worst draft pick for the Armada as he has played on again off again over the course of his junior eligible career, but considering it was a reddit draft and how many good players were picked after him its definitely a bust pick. Ended with 150 games and was mostly used a penalty kill specialist towards the end of his time with the team.

SHL Pick rating: N/A
SMJHL Pick rating: D

S45 SMJHL draft: Third round, twenty eighth overall
S46 SHL draft: Second round, eighteenth overall

Kalevi Karhunen, D (First Gen)

TPE: 621

The second D we picked in the draft. More quietly spoken than Sins nevertheless an important part of rebuilding the locker room. Lynx had more staying power than sins and up until a month or so ago was active and looking like he was going to be another successful Buffalo prospect. Could still be useful if he comes back and uncaps but at this point that is looking sadly unlikely. With 27 goals and 117 assists Karhunen was both a defensive stalwart and offensive contributor for the Armada. Ended his tenure with the most assists in franchise history across all skaters as well as the leading point scorer for all defensemen. Unfortunately Karhunen disappeared completely and never made the step up to the SHL as a result, we all miss him on the team and hope everything is ok with Lynx.

S45 SMJHL draft: Fifth round, forty third overall
S46 SHL draft: Second round, thirty second overall

Peter Larson, G (First Gen)

TPE: 1228

Kind of cheating seeing as he is my irl best friend but that being said he has been invaluable to the Armada going on to break the goalie records for games played, wins and total shut outs. An outstanding member of the locker room and surely the goalie of the future for the Rage. Won the Esa Anrikkannen award in his rookie season but ultimately never quite got us to the four star cup. His 92 wins left him just short of the all time J record of 99 but if he continues on his growth will most certainly be up there with the great SHL goalies.

S45 SMJHL draft: Seventh round, sixty third overall
S46 SHL draft: Undrafted

Ashburn McAllister, W (First Gen)

TPE: 193

One of King’s many friends. Never bothered to log on after he was drafted or respond to any messages on the forums. This pick is probably a bust despite it coming so late in the draft because of the fact that there are many quality players that came after him. Due to having a high defense stat has been useful as a PK specialist on the team.

S45 SMJHL draft: Seventh round, sixty eighth overall
S46 SHL draft: Sixth round, eighty first overall

Ricardo Cotalay, D (First Gen)

TPE: 229

Was reasonably talkative before and after the draft. Quickly made his way past 200 tpe and looked to be a valuable late round addition to the team. Stopped visiting the site all of a sudden and hasn’t been back since. Was traded away to Halifax at the end of the season due to the team not being able to sign anymore 200+ IFAs and has remained on their blue line ever since. While probably a bust we managed to recoup a reddit 6th for him so overall a net draw.

S45 SMJHL draft: Eighth round, seventy third overall
S46 SHL draft: Third round, thirty eighth overall

TPE: 454

Brock Emmerton, W (First Gen)

The steal of the draft for Anchorage. I had talked very briefly to Lueigi before the draft but he seemed like a pretty chilled guy. Was surprised he fell so far and actually would have picked him earlier but missed that he hadn’t been taken. Was very active in the locker room and jumped up massively in the SHL draft. Hung around for another season as a consistent earner and looked like he would make the jump to Hamilton at the end of his third season. Had to relocate for a job and never ended up coming back which was a loss for Hamilton but a gain for Anchorage. Never put up too many points but has done an admirable job with the dirty thankless work on the bottom six and penalty kill.

S45 SMJHL draft: Ninth round, eighty third overall
S46 SHL draft: undrafted

TPE: 173

Bill Umberger, D (First Gen)

This pick was basically a swing for the fences. Wasn’t a lot left on the board at this stage although notably Gordie Boomhover was picked four picks later. Was initially active which was about as much as I could have asked for from a ninth rounder but quickly lost interest in the league and was replaced by an IA defenseman after ten games.

Season 46:

S46 SMJHL draft: First round, sixth overall
S47 SHL draft: First round, sixth overall

TPE: 1142

Tony Ford, D (First Gen)

Another first gen selection. Our draft plans changed after a late call up for Jacob Geza to New England meant that we needed to add depth to our blue line. I had had some limited interactions with Ford in the UK locker room and decided he would be a good fit for the team. He has been constantly active since draft day and was even selected by my SHL team before being traded to LA as part of the package for Sophia Bennett. Put up eighty points in one hundred and fifty games for the Armada before being called up to the Los Angeles Panthers where he has continued to be a valuable member of their team. Overall a very good pick for both this team and the league in general as he holds multiple jobs on the site now. A definite candidate for GMship in the future.

TPE: 1306

Eko Van Otter, W (First Gen)

A first gen and possibly my favourite ever pick. If we hadn’t needed a D man so badly I would have drafted hotdog in the first round no questions asked. I still cannot believe he was allowed to fall to the late third round. Has been a great member of the team and the site in general which was shown by him being taken for the Co GM of New England so early in his tenure. Was a slight disadvantage for the Armada as he was called up after only his second season where he put up forty five points in one hundred games. Does the daily locker room recap or “captains log” so that you don’t have to back read over a thousand messages.

S46 SMJHL draft: Fourth round, thirty ninth overall.
S47 SHL draft: Third round, thirty eighth overall.

TPE: 358

Spencer MacLean, C (First Gen)

I hadn’t really spoken at all to MacLean before the draft so this pick was more a stab in the dark. Birdwatcher turned out to be a really solid pick for the Armada if a slight miss for San Francisco. Was lightly involved in the locker room and was pretty quirky when ever he was around he nevertheless was a pretty good earner while he was active. Managed to get through the first season and the following off season but disappeared pretty much right after he hit the J cap. He was reasonably productive for the Armada putting up 139 points in two hundred and fifty games which was good enough for 11th all time for franchise scoring. Spent his last season playing from the blueline and filled in admirably.

S46 SMHJL draft: Fifth round, forty ninth overall

S46 SMJHL draft: Sixth round, fifty ninth overall
S47 SHL draft: undrafted

TPE: 173

Patrick Muller, W (Recreate)

Ripples last player Victor Kolesnicov was an IA legend for the Armada. Was hoping that we could revive him despite that fact that he was IA before the draft. No such luck and after a handful of games on miniscule minutes Muller was consigned to the healthy scratch pile.

SMJHL Pick rating: F

Season 47:

S47 SMJHL draft: First round, eighth overall
S48 SHL draft: Second round, eighteenth overall

TPE: 342

Joe Kerr, W (Recreate)

Kerr played with Anchorage after the trade deadline the previous season and in the playoffs so was an obvious first round pick for us. Despite leading his class in tpe at the time of the draft Kris had busted out on his players before Kerr and I think about GMs considered him to be somewhat of a risk. So far he has been an active member of our team and had been earning TPE at a good rate until he fell down the stairs and had to take a few weeks off which eventually turned into never coming back. Scored at a decent clip with 154 points in two hundred and fifty five games. Played his last season as a first pair defenseman and helped the Armada to their first four star cup putting up 15 points in twenty games.

SHL Pick rating: F

S47 SMJHL draft: Second round, seventeenth overall
S48 SHL draft: First round, second overall

TPE:  1102

Gabriel Johnson, D (First Gen)

A first gen that I talked a lot with pre draft. In fact I think talking is Gabe’s favourite thing to do seeing as he had amassed over 11,000 messages in our discord in two seasons. As you can imagine Johnson has been the centerpoint of a lot of the locker room activity and is half of the Johnson and Johnson podcast, the only SHL podcast. While his build hasn’t brought him as much success as we would have liked he garnered the attention of a number of SHL GMs and ended up jumping way up in the SHL draft. Gabe played 150 games for the Armada going at also half point per game. Despite being part of one of the strongest J teams in franchise history we had a disastrous S49 and unfortunately were not able to send him off with a cup. One of my better picks for sure and almost certainly going to be a big asset for Hamilton going forwards.

SHL Pick rating: A

S47 SMJHL draft: Fourth round, thirty seventh overall.
S48 SHL draft: undrafted

TPE: 165

Victor Toeman, D (Recreate)

Pizzarony has had a few recreates that didn’t amount to much and this is another one. Was already inactive by the draft but I was hoping we could get him to come back. No such luck but he has played on the third pairing for the two seasons we had him on the team so not a total loss.

Season 48:

S48 SMJHL draft: Round one, sixth overall.
S49 SHL draft: Round one, first overall.

TPE: 959

Elijah Jones, W (Recreate)

Much like Joe Kerr the season before, Jones was part of the post trade deadline run in with the Armada so it was a no brainer to bring him back into the team. Still leading his draft class in tpe earned and also a top quality part of our locker room Toivo is unsurprisingly a home run pick. Had a slightly limited role in the team with mainly third lines minutes in his first season but was promoted to the first in his second and what ultimately proved to be his last junior season. Put up 45 points in 101 games with the team and much like Gabe Johnson would leave without managing to acquire the four star.

SHL Pick rating: A

S48 SMJHL draft: Round two, fourteenth overall.
S49 SHL draft: Round two, twenty first overall.

TPE: 663

Jake Primeau, C (First Gen)

A new comer to the league Primeau was not the consensus pick for the scouting team in Anchorage but has more than vindicated his selection. Like his line mate and fellow rookie Elijah Jones Primeau had a somewhat quiet season post seven goals and twelve points to round out the season. With more time on the power play due next season he will certainly improve on those statistics. Although not the most active in the locker room he drops in from time to time to let us know he is around and ‘reading everything’ and has been earning well.

S48 SMJHL draft: Round four, thirty fifth overall.
S49 SHL draft: undrafted

TPE: 155

Fredrik Jensen, D (First Gen)

In what would prove to be one of the shallowest recent drafts in the SMJHL Jensen was picked up as a filler for any possible shortcomings in the defensive core. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it we were never forced to used Jensen and he has ended his time in Anchorage without ever suiting up for a game. More or less a shot in the dark that didn’t amount to anything.

Season 49:

S49 SMJHL draft: round two, 14th overall.
S50 SHL draft: round one, 6th overall

TPE: 766

Augustus Wang, D (First Gen)

After a late pre draft trade involving three teams Anchorage dropped out of the first round in what would prove an inspired move as they still managed to secure their first round target at 14th. Since then Wang has been a staple on the Anchorage blueline consistently putting up great offensive numbers including being the driving force behind the Armada’s cup run last season where he put up 22 points in 20 games. Coming into the final season of junior eligibility Wang is only 43 points short of Karhunen’s points record despite having played two seasons left and he has a great opportunity to steal that record for himself.

S49 SMHJL draft: Round two, 15th overall.
S50 SHL draft: Round two, 18th overall.

Samuel Michaud, D (First Gen)

Coming in the pick directly after Augustus Wang we took another defenseman. Michaud didn’t have the longevity for Anchorage that Wang has had but he did manage to win a cup with Hamilton in his first season up. Despite leaving us early Apricot has been a constantly active member of our locker room and has had an extended tenure in the SMJHL head office. He put up a modest 44 points including two goals in 100 regular season games. While not a fantastic pick in terms of value of return for the team he has been a great addition to the SHL in general.

S50 SHL draft: Round one, 12th overall

TPE: 453

Ian Venables, G (First Gen)

Budgie was high on our radar from almost the moment he created. Very active in the pre draft combine he was someone that a lot of the management team clicked with. When goalies started going off the board during the second and third rounds of the draft we were worried that he might not fall to us. Fortunately we were able to select him early in the 4th round and he has been a stalwart between the pipes for the Armada. Starting his final season of eligibilty in third for wins for PGF/Anchorage goalies he probably won’t make Larson’s record although he has a great chance to take the shutout record. Due to life circumstances his tpe earning has tapered off recently but he is back and will hopefully backstop the Armada to a second four star cup in two seasons.

TPE: 717

Daniel Bischoff, C (First Gen)

Dylan, Dylan, Dylan. The product of a late scramble from hotdog for a forward after our initial target went off the board. Despite our at times tumultuous relationship the majority of the time Dylan has been a good member of the Armada locker room. After a tough rookie season where he only managed 11 points on the third line Bischoff really took off and has consistently been the most productive player on the Armada. After putting up 105 points in the last two seasons he is well on the way to cracking the 50 point marker again this season and was instrumental in the Armada’s first cup win with 23 points in 20 games. The way things are going so far this season we will need him to put us on his back one last time before he moves up to Minnesota next season. Unlikely to break the franchise scoring record but will probably finish in the top five.

TPE: 314

Jay Reeves, W (First Gen)

Picked up due to being the girlfriend of our previous GM. Jays has been on again off again with her activity but seems to more or less be done with the SHL now. Has a decent build so has been a useful inactive piece for us and as a result has been moved all over the line up including being used on the defense. 92 points including 45 goals in 150 games is not a bad return for someone drafted midway through the fifth round. In all likelihood she will play out all five seasons with the team.

Season 50:

S50 SMJHL draft: Round one, 4th overall
S51 SHL draft: Round two, 24th overall

TPE: 312

Berry Blue, D (First Gen)

I’ll be the first to admit that we bodged the season fifty draft. A miscommunication between Arty and I meant that we didn’t do any scouting at all and more or less had to draft on the fly. Blue has shown minor activity in the locker room but not much. Is a slow but consistent earner and has been a pretty solid piece on the blueline. 56 points in 100 games is not bad for a more defensive orientated player. As decent as Blue has been for the Armada and even though it looks likely that we will keep him for four seasons in hindsight he was a reach in the first round and even though we really needed defense in a shallow draft in honesty this one is somewhat of a miss.

TPE: 568

Mitchell Van Der Heijden, C (Recreate)

Where we messed up in the first we struck gold in the second. With St Louis opting to take Evok in the first round it enabled us to snake Bloos with the first pick of the second round. Now a constantly active member of the locker room he was almost scared off with the initial welcome that he received. Earning at a good rate he has also been a major contributor in his first two seasons particularly in providing the coveted one-two punch from the 2C position in last seasons cup run. Allowed to drop to NOLA late in the first round of the SHL draft they have managed to get a really good player when he probably should have gone higher up the board. 75 points in 100 games prior to this season he is looking to break point per game pace for the first time and with it looking like he will spend his four eligible seasons down with the Armada it is more than possible that he will lead the boats in all time points come the end of his junior career.

Gart Cheezit, W (First Gen)

Continuing with our up and down draft we whiffed on Cheezit big time although in fairness there isn’t a lot of value that went after him. Joined the locker room and more or less instantly bailed never to update or be seen again. Played a bit part here and there as a filler but otherwise amounted to nothing. Not even sure why Tampa drafted him.

Stan Hanson, W (First Gen)

If you consider what came the round before him Maddkelt is probably the biggest steal Anchorage have ever had. What started off as a shot in the dark has turned into a player that updates regularly, is a super good dude and locker presence as well as being our resident goon and connoisseur of old school hockey. Doesn’t put up too many points with only 20 in two seasons he nevertheless is very much in the running to break franchise hits and pim records as well as being a great part of the penalty kill. Yet to be seen what Texas will do with him but we are more than happy to have him all four seasons if it comes to that.

Ulrik Bergstrom, D (First Gen)

The consensus first round pick for the entire scouting team and he has more than justified that choice. A solid active presence in the locker room Wiad has also earned consistently and found himself a regular amongst the Armada top four. Hasn’t troubled the scorers as much as he would like but has accumulated fifty two points in one hundred games while providing solidarity to a somewhat offensive minded defensive unit. Will step up to be the number one guy next season and is surely in line for a break out season. Passed over by a number of SHL teams Tampa looks to have secured themselves a great d man for the future.

Co-GM and thus automatically drafted with our second round pick. About as safe as you can get in an SMJHL pick seeing as he does not plan on playing in the SHL and will spend all five of his eligible seasons with the Armada. Two seasons in and still has not hit the cap yet (reeeee) but nonetheless should make it to 425ish before the end of his third season. Nineteen goals and fifty nine points in his first two seasons is not a bad return but he will be looking to kick on and make a run at the top scorers podium next season.

We only had minor contact with Ryan before the draft so at this stage it was more or less best player available. Lucky for us it turned out to be a fantastic pick. Not only is Cvit a handy earner he is also a fairly constant presence around the locker room. Moved up and down the line up as well as filling in on defense in the latter part of the last season he never has any complaints which makes him more or less the perfect player to have on the roster. Has not been as successful on the score board as he would have liked but twenty of his fifty four points have been goals and with the switch to a more sniper centric build with FHM we expect his already decent goal rate to go up. Toronto managed to snake him in the middle stages of round two and perhaps aided by some inside knowledge appear to have bagged themselves a real steal.

Insayne’s previous player Dani Forsberg was Prince George royalty so it was a no brainer to bring him back into the fold. Played the end of last season with us and won the Armada’s inaugural cup. The first “unknown” entity that we picked up in this draft class. Really impressed the scouting team pre draft and kept that up by being a great locker room presence. Had a connection to Woelkers through NSFL. He had played for the Kraken as a draftable free agent after the previous season's deadline. Carolina expressed an immediate interest in acquiring him off of us and when talked to he also said he would like to go back to the Kraken. A trade deal was quickly thrashed out and Johansson was shipped off to Carolina before he ever played a game for the Armada.

SMJHL pick rating: Will be tbc until the pick he was traded for comes to fruition or not.

S52 SMJHL draft: Round six, 59th overall

TPE: 185

Salomon Frosty, W (First Gen)

Drafted as a stab in the dark seeing as he hadn’t been around much prior to the draft day but had put in some work a week or so before. Returned and leapt ahead in tpe and looked like he might turn out to be a good steal. However he has commitments to a number of leagues and ultimately the SHL proved to be one bridge too far.

SMJHL pick rating: F

S52 SMJHL draft: Round seven, 69th (nice) overall

TPE: 155

James Boxman, W (First Gen)

Just goes to prove that you should never listen to Dylan. He begged me to draft this guy from the second round constantly until we finally relented and picked him up at the end. Surprise surprise he never became active and was cut from the roster before the season even began.

SMJHL pick rating: F

In conclusion:

Over the past nine seasons we have made forty three draft selections so that comes out at about 4.8 picks per draft which seems about right when you factor in the number of throwaway picks that teams use in reddit drafts. From an researched perspective it feels like most SMJHL drafts have about three useful rounds and even at the latter stages of the twenties it can be a toss up as to whether you will get anything of use.

For my part I feel that the introduction of every team making the playoffs has really killed the trade market in the J. Compounded by the fact that there is a revolving door of general managers it is often hard to establish a fair price or precedent over a prolonged period of time. As such I usually avoid trading away picks if I can help it seeing as you are never really certain of when you will lose your prospects. Thankfully I have had almost entirely positive interactions with SHL GM’s and it is rare for you to unexpectedly lose a player these days.

Of our forty three picks only eight have been recreates and it would be interesting to see what the total percentage of recreates to first generation players there was across those nine drafts. Within those picks there have been nineteen wingers, fifteen defensemen, seven centres and only two goalies. Partly this is because we have been lucky with our centres (Xena, Primeau, MacLean) staying down for their max terms as well as both of our goalie selections doing all four seasons while updating regularly.

This was a real good read, thanks @Acsolap . Honoured to be one of only two goalies drafted. Gonna prove you wrong on that B- rating though, mark my words.
