Season 52 Whaling Awards
#1
(This post was last modified: 03-11-2020, 07:50 AM by puolivalmiste.)

As Whalers got eliminated from playoffs on second round and their season is now over, that also concludes second and most likely last whaling season. Like season before for season 52 I have awarded three to one whales to best three players of Whalers and now that there is no more whaling to be done I'm here to award best players of season, almost all awards are based on both regular and playoff performance and as playoff run fell shorter total number of Whales are bit lower, also this season was way closer than last one. Keeping the well known and traditional names for awards to see if this will be the season when someone gets award named after them.

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. Award

This award is given to a rookie player who during season has most Whales. Often rookies have smaller role in team and them being one of top 3 performers of the team in any game isn't too common. This season we have a tie for this award as two players were able to collect same number of whales. Neither of them were top of rookie scoring during season but as whales award big plays more than consistency they were able to push themselves above rest of the class. Both of them also were able to collect multiple whales during Whalers short playoff run. Winner of Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. Award goes to:

William Hartmann @thecanadiancanuck & Lligma Broomstick @Lligma Broomstick - 11 Whales

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Björn Leppänen Award

As Whales are simple and often based on things like points, as who does not like someone scoring a hat-trick, we need an award that still is based on scored points but is given to player with high points to Whale ratio with some math to make sure its just not an award for lowest whale count. This is also one of awards that defenseman have legit shot to take home, but once again top spot is taken away by forward as one of fourth line players was able to score a single goal but 18 assists during regular season. As runner up we have defenseman who almost pushed himself to be teams top scoring player only being one point behind the leading forwards. Winner of Björn Leppänen Award is:

Austin Powers @Champloo  - 3 Whales / 19 points

Runner up: Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. @soulja  - 18 Whales / 42 points

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

François Breton Award

Talking about awards that defense and goalies can ignore, François Breton Award is given to player who uses their time on ice most efficiently. Anyone who took look at this seasons scoring for Whalers might be familiar with our first line and while they were lot on ice they spend their time there well. This award goes to winger of second line who had average time on ice at 16 minutes and 15 seconds, scoring 43 points in 56 games. Winner of François Breton Award is:

Marcus Ohlsson @CleverPin - 2.04 Whales per 60 minutes on ice

Runner up: Francois Breton @treesap - 1.90 Whales per 60 minutes on ice

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Marcus Ohlsson Award

What is better than gaining lots of whales? Sure it is gaining lots of whales game after game. Last season we saw tie between two people with streak of five and yet this season we got pushed to next tier as we have four way tie on our hands. Next two players missed the mark by one game for glorious 6 way tie but this has to do. Also for first time we have one of players winning award named after them. So to everyone's surprise winners of Marcus Ohlsson Award are:

White Goodman @Jearim & Marcus Ohlsson & Sabo Tage @Glyc & The stingray that Killed steve irwin @Gooney - Streak of 4 games

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Jean-Paul Boivin Award

Few seasons ago we thought that every team needs someone who can pass and as this biased award system values goals over assists this awards exists to be given to someone who makes huge contributions to teams success, but still falls short to be most impactful player of the team time after time or scores their points steadily over long period of time. Jean-Paul Boivin Award goes to player who has most single whale performances during season. As I like dishing out awards for people I'm happy to announce we have another tie in our hands as that is the thing of this season. All these players had 35 or more points when counting in playoffs and most of them being assist. Winners of Jean-Paul Boivin Award:

Stracimir Petrović @"AtlasHunter" & Sven Yxskaft @kenvald & Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. - 7 Single whale performances

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

The stingray that Killed stewe irwin Award

Longest award of them all which might be only thing going for this award, awarded to player who has most double whale performances. So they were not the best but didn't suck as much as rest of the pack. I say they because awards are on sale and everyone gets an award, like in this case of back to back three way ties. This time we have all positions represented so it clearly shows that these awards were as balanced as they could be with no change for positional bias at all. The stingray that Killed stewe irwin Award goes to:

White Goodman & Mikas Bieksa@ontanis & Stracimir Petrović - 6 Double whale performances

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Bobby Bobcalf Award

Like no one could expect at this point Bobby Bobcalf Award is given to player with most Triple whale performances. This goes to player who most often was selected to be best player from Whalers. All I will spoil is that winner is same goalie as last season which should not be big surprise to anyone following Whalers this season. Often goalies can be player who makes or breaks team specially when games are close also if it is low scoring one there is not much points going around no matter if it is a win or loss, giving goalies good change to gain these triple whales. So winner for Bobby Bobcalf Award is:

White Goodman - 10 Triple whale performances

Runner up: François Breton - 7 Triple whale performances

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Cullen Gray Award

What could be better than counting number of whales for a season? Counting them for shorter, more important period as it is easier and stakes are higher. Cullen Gray Award goes to player who stepped up to top when it mattered the most, meaning the player who collected most whales during playoffs. As Whalers didn't have very long playoffs run this season we have only sample of 6 games to look at. As result winner got only 6 whales and 6 others were withing range to make it tie or overtake winner if series went to game seven, so it was close but as things are we can just keep Goodman here between awards to see if he can walk back to his place once all is said and done. So winner of Cullen Gray Award is:

White Goodman - 6 Whales in playoffs

Runner up: Mikas Bieksa - 5 Whales in playoffs

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

White Goodman Award

Talking about White Goodman. This award goes to player who had most of any whale performances during season so someone who was most often contributing above others when it mostly comes to winning (or trying to win) games. Thank god we got rid of all those ties and can keep on with more regular winner and runner up setup. This seasons whales were more evenly spread which shows with this award as last season winner was whaling in 27 games while this season we have winner with only 19. Winner for White Goodman Award is:

White Goodman - 19 Times whaling

Runner up: François Breton - 17 Times whaling

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Jan Zacha Award

Here we are at last, the ultimate award for best whaler of the season, not the best player of the Whalers but player who did the most whaling, though they might not be mutually exclusive. Anyone who has been following this far might start counting that someone with most triple and double performances, top playoff performance, most times whaling and one of longest streaks might be good pick for this. Unlike last season where final positions changed during playoffs this time it was one mans game for long time. Winner of Jan Zacha Award is:

White Goodman - 45 Whales

Runner up: François Breton - 36 Whales

Whalers  Whalers  Whalers

Congratulations to all winners, this was fun experience but one I most likely won't keep up as we move to FHM and I start my third season on SHL. So let whales rest in peace. And just to get more money out of this below is full list of all players and their Whale counts for season 52.
