GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Period 1
The game begins rather evenly with offensive output coming first from Anchorage Left Wing Danny White (@13:31) and then late in the period from Colorado's Chris Cerullo (@19:00). Teams appear to be evenly matched as well this period with the Armada generating 14 shots on the net of Samat Beibitzhanovof and the Raptors following up with 11 on frame to test Sergei Potinov. Both goalies appear at this point to be standing tall against good chances. Of note as well, there were 4 penalties this period (two from each team), neither team able to find the net on several testing chances.

Period 2
This period looks more lopsided as the Armada turn up the heat but see little in the way of lighting the lamp against Beibitzhanovof. Colorado comes out flat this period but is lucky when Armada defenseman Ulrik Bergstrom takes a High Sticking penalty (@8:18). Hariken Urawa (@9:38) puts one of their four shots generated this period past Potinov on the power play. Anchorage is able to put only one of twelve past net-minder late this period courtesy of Braden Lowrie (@19:49). Shot totals end the frame with Anchorage leading the chances race 26-15.

Period 3
If you thought Anchorage turned it up all the way in the 2nd, think again. The Armada were able to find yet another gear, peppering Beibitzhanovof with an additional 20 shots this period. Three of those pucks would find the back of the net thanks to Lando Norris (@2:25), Corey Rigler (@4:52), and a second tally for the night on the power play from Braden Lowrie (@11:20). The Raptors again seemed to come out flat, amassing only 8 shots on frame in the period, but slipping one past Potinov on a power play after Stan Hanson takes an Interference penalty (@6:49), Sven Svenson (@7:01) tries to breathe life into his team and give them something to build on. The scoring would end there for Colorado and the Armada would emerge victorious on a 46-23 shot differential.

Last Thoughts
An excellent 4 point game from Braden Lowrie is able to cover the glaring hole left empty by a lack of production from Mitchell van der Heijden. Where was he tonight? He seemed invisible on the ice and the Armada seemed to struggle to capitalize on their shots in what should have been a more dominant showing at this point in the season. Without van der Heijden cleaning up in the slot and putting pucks in the back of the net, this team may see trouble from other middle of the pack clubs down the stretch and give them fits in the playoffs if they can't figure it out.

Free Puck Giveaway!
One of the biggest key factors that lead to the Armada taking this victory is the giveaway differential. Anchorage only gave it away twice, but on the other end of the ice Colorado managed to cough up the puck 13 times. If you compare it to football the team that turns it over the most usually ends up losing, so it's no suprise Anchorage pulled this one out despite giving up three goals. A combination of Anchorage's force in the west along with Colorado struggling this season has lead to a lack of puck control by the Raptors. While the season might already be over for Colorado they will definitely be focusing on maintaining puck control for next season.

Playing with Power!
This was a very heated game with a lot of power play opportunities. 14 total penalties were taken this game, almost 30 minutes of powerplay time. And with those power plays the special teams provided goals, as the Rapters were able to get 2 and the Armada 1, going 3/14 total on the powerplays. One of Colorado's highest shot performances against Anchorage this season, and it was gifted to them by careless play. Though the Rapters were just as careless, but only suffered one goal. Sven Svenson and Hariken Urawa were both able to score for the Rapters while Braden's Lowries second goal of the game helped seal the win in the final minutes through the powerplay

Get Low Get Low
First star of the night is undoubtedly Braden Lowrie who came into this game strong with two goals and two assists leading Anchorage to a victory. Grabbing the assist for the first goal of the game, it wasn't until the end of the second when he'd get his own goal and actually tie the game up with 10 seconds to go until the third. Then just 2 minutes into the third he set up Lando Norris for the easy goal, and then eventually netted the final goal to put the game away on a power play. The first star played like a first liner, and despite only get 16 shifts he would end up scoring the most points this game.

Star of the show

Having a future superstar on your team is something that can make or break it in many games, when those players decide to take over a game and take you over the finishing line. This is exactly what happened with Braden Lowrie tonight, who would not let Anchorage lose. He was a part of 4 of the 5 goals that Anchorage scored on the night. In addition to the two key assists he had, he scored the final goal of the game and the clincher in some ways. He was put on the powerplay to score goals and that is exactly what he did. These types of players do not come around often and we can see their value.

Keeping it safe

Overall this was a tight game and probably Colorado feels like they had a good shot and could have come out with a win. One thing I feel like the Raptors should look at in upcoming practices is puck retention and playing safe. In this game they had 13 giveaways compared to the two of Anchorage. If you are giving away the puck that many times, you have to expect bad things to happen. I am not sure if it was a case of trying too hard or trying something too difficult, but something needs to be looked at in practice. In some cases, it is doing the simple and boring stuff right that can make all the difference.

Going till the end

This game was tied 2-2 at the start of the final period, meaning that there was everything to play for and both teams had a shot to win it. In the end what mattered most was which team was more hungry about it and had the drive to win and in this case it was Anchorage. They came out of the locker room and onto the ice with a different energy level to Colorado and it showed with two goals in the first five minutes of the final period to really show everyone that they were in it to win it. I think this is good for them as well as it will give them good energy going into the next game as well.

Unexpected Armada
Anchorage Armada was not favorites before season started but they finded their way and now are on a run to get in to finals. Does Four star cup miracle is real for them?? Of course Raptors was not biggest opponents and Armadas win in this game are only normal but still they are in the top in the standings. Unexpected under dogs came in strong this season and I would not be suprrised anymore if they will be in FINALS. I think they can not win Falcons in best of seven series but they can get to finals what would be already pretty big achieveemnt

Doubled shots
Armada shot 46 times in this game while Raptors only 23. I think this showes how different these teams is. Armada are in different level and Raptors are not that team who can compete with them. It is really interesting that Raptors scored three goals in this game and lost only with two goals differental. Armada was angry and did not stop shooting that puck to Raptors net but that only was in net five times while Raptors scored three times. That was similar game if we watch result but was not even close to be similar if we watch statistics- like shots and more

No clue why Raptors are so low
Colorado Raptors have no normal reason why they are so low in standings as they are. Last place in their conference and soon it can be last place in the whole league. Raptors have great defense and a lot of new players who are good. Goal keeper with max amount of tpe. Is it problems with coach stuff or strategies?? WHAT IS GOING ON ON RAPTORS SIDE? Of course there are players who will grow up and will be better in next seasons but I think that Raptors needed to be at least top 5 with this roster and coach. Anyway this season is almost throwed in the trash from Raptors perespective so we just need to wait next season so we can see how good raptors will be next season when all rookies will be a bit better and other players will have their glow up as well. If Raptors will be so bad next season as well I think that they need to fire the coach

The Faceoff Circle

That clash between the top and bottom teams of the Western Conference had Anchorage prevailing in the Shots on Goal and Goals columns, but the faceoff situation ended up very tight, with the Raptors getting the edge by only three faceoffs; they won 36 faceoffs against the Armada's 33.

Faceoff Hero
Simothy Drunkebird  Raptors
Despite yet another disappointing loss for his team, Colorado's captain was the best overall player on the ice tonight. He might not have gotten a star for it, but good defensive play is rarely rewarded this way. In the faceoff circle, he got a 57.9% success rate : a final output of 11-8.

Faceoff Zero
Chris Cerullo Raptors
Cerullo has struggled in the faceoff circle this year, especially when compared to his center teammates. This game was particularly difficult for him; he had the upper hand in only three of his 10 appearances at the dot (a 30% success rate).

1) The most surprising stat of the game to me is that the Colorado Raptors had 7 power play opportunities but they only shot the puck 23 times vs Anchroage Armada’s 46 shots. Usually when a team receives so many power plays they would be up many more shots. Though the Raptors did score 2 power play goals I think part of the reason they did not shoot it as much as they could, or were as successful, were their 13 giveaways that they had in the game. When you give the puck up that much it is hard to get many shots off, regardless of how many PP attempts you get

2) The unsung hero this game to me was Anchorage Armada defenseman Ulrik Bergstrom. Ulrik’s quiet, yet solid game, usually goes unnoticed so I think it is important to call him out here in this one. Important on both sides of special teams and a veteran presence in the line up he had a great stat line of +3 and 2 takeaways that led directly to scores on the other end of the ice. Him and Lando Norris were the best pair on the ice for Armada that night and goes to show how useful veterans can be to a young lineup such as Anchorage’s.

3) The play of the game in my opinion was Anchorage Armada’s Braden Lowrie’s goal on the power play near the end of the game. This highlight reel goal by Braden came on a very terrible giveaway by rookie defenseman Aumy Jr. while trying to clear the puck to the other end of the ice so the penalty kill unit could get off and change. Instead the puck goes directly to Braden who gave a headfake to Raptor’s goalie Samat before sending it top shelf right before reaching the crease. This was a big blow to the Raptors comeback attempt in the final last half of the last period.

Pucks Toward the Net
The modern game is a lot less about dump and chase and grinding, and a lot more about maintaining possession and getting good shots to the net. Possession numbers and shots were all stacked entirely in favor of the Anchorage Armada.  The Armada doubled the Raptors’ shots, so it is no wonder why the score was almost the same.  The blocked shots count damns the Raptors even more on this front, where they were forced to block 29 shots compared to Anchorage’s 7.  If it weren’t for Colorado sacrificing bodies, this could have been a lot worse for them.  A team simply cannot win games when they are being offensively dominated so badly.

Using Scoring Depth
Colorado clearly had a defensive game plan coming in.  They knew they were probably going to get outshot and outworked in their defensive zone.  Their main defense against the shootenanny was to tightly mark Anchorage’s leading scorer, Mitchell van der Heijden.  If you can take him out of the play, you can gum up a good portion of the Armada’s offense, and can try to fast-break your way to some lucky goals.  Colorado did a great job, holding van der Heijden to a 0/0/-1 stat line.  Unfortunately for the Raptors, Anchorage’s number two scorer, Braden Lowrie, had an outstanding night, posting a 2/2/+2.  When you can depend on offense from multiple places, the game just gets so much easier for you.

Power Plays Make it a Game
This game was awfully clutch and grabby, and therefore we saw a steady parade of players heading to the sin bin.  We saw 28 minutes of penalties handed out, but, surprisingly, there were only 3 powerplay goals scored all night.  Anchorage capitalized on a single one of their 7 powerplay attempts as the Raptors’ defense held strong up until the end.  Colorado was able to bang in a couple, going 2 for 7 themselves.  If it weren’t for their powerplay attempts that Colorado was able to put together, they would have barely had any offense all night.  The score could have been much worse for the Raptors if Anchorage would have been more disciplined.
