A superstar in the making is what news outlets have been reporting in Russia on Victor Fedorov. This 6’3 Russian center is drawing comparisons of some current and former SHL greats. His defensive zone play is what really sets him apart from his u18 teammates and other 18-year old’s around the world. Fedorov has made it clear that he wants to take his talents to North American hockey and leave his native Russia. It is becoming more and more often that we see these younger Russian players start to come over at a younger age than say 20 years ago when you wouldn’t see these Russian players until their later twenties. It’s exciting to see Fedorov come over at such a young age to be able to adapt to the ice size and many other factors including language, culture, and just general familiarize with his surroundings.
The 6’3 center coming out of Russia will project to be a top 6 shutdown center that will need some offensive help around him as he is coming over to North American hockey lacking some elite stick handling ability. What is often looked passed is Fedorov’s hard and very accurate shot. He was one of the highest rookie scorers in the history of the KHL and that is very hard to have done considering some of the all-time legends that have played in the KHL. The young center has elite hockey iq and is often seen on film making jumps on passes and always having his head up focused on the next opportunity to help his team out whether that is in the offensive or defensive zone. Another interesting aspect of this young center’s abilities on the ice is that he is a big body. Being only 18 years old and weighing around 210 pounds; he is automatically one of the biggest players on the ice and he has taken advantage of this and has learned how to use his body to get into the head of the opposing team. The hope for an SHL team that eventually drafts him is that he will already have the aggressive mindset and it will translate directly from his future play in the SMJHL and then into the SHL.
With the SMJHL draft coming up with in the next few weeks it will be interesting to see where Fedorov lands. He is one of the later players to commit to the draft so teams may have not had him on their initial draft boards and might need to take a flyer on him.
