Who could be looking to trade out of their early draft pick? 2X Draft Media

So while writing my initial mock draft article that is still in the works, I realized the odds of some of these teams trading is rather high (or higher than usual), so before my mock draft I decided to talk first about which team could end up trading one, some, or all of their picks in the first two rounds.

Team: Atlanta
Odds of trading out: Low
Picks: 22nd Overall
Reasoning: Having one pick in the top 36 is something that I don't think Atlanta will move. It's possible that @hotdog could make a play to move up in the draft if there is a deal to be made, but as an expansion team, I see him looking for pieces to add here.

Team: Baltimore
Odds of trading out: Low
Picks: 20th Overall
Reasoning: It's nice when you get your GM back who if he wasn't a GM would be an early first round pick easily. With a new CO-GM in town they are definitely looking to get this pick right. Sitting at 20, they can definitely grab a high quality player at that pick and not have to pay anything to move up. I see BAP staying put

Team: Buffalo
Odds of trading out: Impossible
Picks: None
Reasoning: They don't have a pick in the first two rounds. If they did I would have to believe that they would look to move it after losing such a strong player in expansion.

Team: Chicago Syndicate
Odds of trading out: Medium
Picks: 29th Overall
Reasoning: Sitting at 29th overall could be an interesting spot for the Syndicate. Having two seasoned GM's in Ofer and Velv means that they know a lot of the recreates and know that their could be someone who just falls all the way to them at 30. There is also odds that they may be looking at a pool of new players and not recreates at this pick. I could see them making a deal here if the right crop of players are here and a team is willing to pay something for their pick.

Team: Hamilton
Odds of trading out: Medium
Picks: 4th and 32nd Overall
Reasoning: This is an interesting spot. Hamilton was able to make a trade with Atlanta for 4th overall and another young player for their 2k defenseman they had to give up. However there is rumors that the player they are looking for they may be able to get later on. So this is a team that may trade out, may trade down. Similar to Chicago they may move 32nd overall if someone falls that other teams want to grab

Team: Manhattan Rage
Odds of trading out: Impossible
Picks: None
Reasoning: Same as Buffalo, its kind of hard to make a pick when you don't have one. With the signing of Cleary, I doubt that Manhattan trades into these rounds at all. I think they are mostly preparing for their season and testing lines then preparing for the draft. (Not that they aren't prepared to make a trade if the right one comes up)

Team: New England Wolfpack
Odds of trading out: Low-Medium
Picks: 5th 10th 14th and 27th overall
Reasoning: This is an interesting spot for the Wolfpack. They are more on towards the end of their rebuild. This is something that you will see when I talk abut Tampa Bay and Toronto as well. It is possible that for the right deal for a S50-S53 player comes up that could help complete their rebuild comes up it could be hard to refuse. NEW did trade up for 5th so it is most likely that they have someone who they want very high on their list baring if Hamilton does trade 4th overall. I could also see them making all four picks and not answering a DM for a trade as well.

Team: Tampa Bay Barracuda
Odds of trading out: My opinion: Medium-High
Picks: 1st 6th 12th 17th 19th 24th and 36th Overall
Reasoning: So I don't think they would trade all of these picks by any means. I do believe at 1st and probably 6th they have who they want. The issue that they are facing is that they are already 18 prospects deep so far. When you look at their depth chart while losing one player to an early retirement they have 8 defensemen who are on their way to being SHL ready. I think for them to get two forwards that they need with those top two picks and see what they can get for 12th and 17th could really help out the Barracuda.

Team: Toronto North Stars
Odds of trading out: No Idea
Picks: 2nd overall
Reasoning: For Toronto, this is either a, I love this player no reason to trade this pick and then for the most part be done as they don't have another pick in the top 36. With this being a fairly top heavy draft. I could see Toronto trying to trade down from this pick to get who they want but it is definitely based on who they want there. Other than the possible consensus top pick there are a lot of players who technically could go First Overall. To have a player that good at 2nd is hard to pass up. It's possible that they trade with Tampa Bay so Tampa can get who they want at 6 and then give up maybe 6th and 17th. Just spit balling here but in honesty I could see it going either way.

Team: Calgary Dragons
Odds of trading out: Low
Picks: 13th and 31st Overall
Reasoning: As the dragons look to really open their window in competition coming off a strong third place Western Conference finish, I think they look to add to their team with these two picks. I think who they want is fairly solidified with these picks and won't look to move either of them.

Team: Edmonton Blizzard
Odds of trading out: Impossible
Picks: None
Reasoning: Similar to the other teams without a first round pick. I do not see Edmonton making a pick here. With them in the prime of their competition window I also don't see them trading back into the first two rounds either.

Team: Los Angeles Panthers
Odds of trading out: Low-Medium
Picks: 8th 16th 26th and 33rd Overall
Reasoning: This is an interesting spot for a team that is trying to figure out which direction to go. Losing Cleary to free agency was something that they knew was coming from early on in the season. While they did have a competitive season and were able to let Cleary end his Panther career on a solid note they need to decide where they are going as a franchise. What is nice for them is that GM Wasty's player goes to their team automatically who would also be a first round pick, before their other two. I could see a trade occurring for possibly 16th as they look to retool and find which direction they are going in.

Team: Minnesota Chiefs
Odds of trading out: Low
Picks: 3rd and 32nd
Reasoning:I don't think the Chiefs move here. They are definitely more in the meat of their rebuild and definitely need the players here to bolster their team. I could see them look to possibly add picks but I doubt it. I am sure their GM tandem is working hard to figure out who they are taking at 3rd overall although it is possible that they have known for a while who they are taking with that pick. I am going to assume that they will be very quiet on draft day and be happy with who they get with their picks.

Team: New Orleans Specters
Odds of trading out: Medium
Picks: 21st Overall
Reasoning: This is an interesting spot for the Specters as they came in 2nd in the Western Conference. As a team that is looking to dethrone the Blizzard they could use the similar strategy of the right player falling and could use that to make a trade with this pick. At 21, there should still be a lot of strong players left and someone could definitely want to make the move to jump over Atlanta to get them. They also are very fortunate to get GM's JK's player auto drafted to the team to have a strong piece in the future.

Team: San Francisco Pride
Odds of trading out: Low
Picks 7th 25th and 34th Overall
Reasoning: As a team with a lot of challenges moving forward I don't see them doing anything but draft on Saturday. You have already seen them unload some of their cap as the team begins to enter its rebuild as it only has to survive next season with the massive cap hit. After that they can start to bring back players as they look to improve and then have the cap space to be able to do so. They are one of the teams that I could see looking to possibly add more picks in this draft as they shed salary cap for this up-coming season.

Team: Seattle Argonauts
Odds of trading out: Medium
Picks: 15th 18th and 23rd
Reasoning: Having traded with New England already, Tig has shown that he isn't scared to make a move. As a team with already a 2k TPE defenseman, Tig has more control over his future than necessarily some of the teams who are in rebuild. It is possible that he could use these picks to trade for a Co-GM. It is possible he just makes these picks. It is also possible that he uses these picks to try to look for players that S50-S53 who he could look to bolster his roster and have Seattle be a bit more ready to compete now. I think he's in a cool spot in terms of what he could do and wouldn't be surprised if he is sending out a bunch of messages to other GM's as well as his war room to figure out what the next move for him should be.

Team: Texas
Odds of trading out: Medium-Low
Picks: 11th and 28th Overall
Reasoning: As Texas looks to improve and become more competitive as they look to climb the mountain that is the western conference. I think for them if the player they want is there then they take them but I could also see them trading if they aren't sure on the player they want here. With new leadership in town as well this would be a great opportunity for people to show us what they are about moving forward.

Team: Winnipeg Jets
Odds of trading out: Low
Picks: 9th Overall
Reasoning: This is a pick that I see happening. With Wozy getting picked by an expansion team, the Jets mission in this draft is pretty straightforward. They have to replace a strong staple defenseman. I do believe that this pick will happen or a defenseman will happen here whether it is a pick of a trade for a defenseman. I do think the pick is a lot more likely hence the Low odds of making a trade here.

Summary:

I think compared to other drafts or in the SHL in general we will see higher than average movement come this draft. What has made this class so interesting is that although it is a "reddit draft" it is also a very strong recreate class and at times has been dubbed as a recreate class. There are a lot of players with pedigree here and a lot of promising new creates. What it really comes down to is scouting as well know is so valuable. Who they talk to will determine then next few days of pre-draft trades, trades that will only occur if X-player isn't available. Obviously this is all speculation with no real sources of information. As I mentioned multiple times in the article a lot of this can change as players fall. I expect this draft to go fairly slowly online as a lot of teams "work the phones" during the draft.

I wish all of the prospects the best and hope you go where you want even if it may not be when you think you are going to get picked.
