Double Draft Media - First Round Picks
#1
(This post was last modified: 11-24-2020, 09:00 AM by JSS331.)

The first round had some surprises and some picks that most people figured were coming.  There were some high TPE producers who slipped down the board and others who produced big numbers in the juniors last year that moved up the board.  I am sure there were some recreates that also got preferential treatment as they have less risk of becoming an inactive than a newer player would.  Regardless, many of these players will not see time on their respective SHL clubs for a few seasons so there will be a lot of improvement left to do and TPE left to earn before they make an impact on the league.  Now for the picks in the Season 57 SHL Draft.

Round 1:

1 .  [Image: wolfpack4.png] New England Wolfpack - Jonathan Granström - Halkohol  - The third most TPE in the draft class and the top forward.  New England wanted a scorer and they have one in Jonathan Granstrom.  The Detroit Falcon had a solid season of eight goals and seven assists.  As it was mentioned in the pre draft media, the minus 13 is a concern but not something that can't be addressed with all of the TPE he is earning.  The Wolfpack have to be satisfied with this pick.
2 . [Image: monarchs.png] Minnesota Monarchs - Arsene Leclerc - spooked  - The pick that surprised nobody and at least gave a lot of people on this site some free TPE in the draft predictions.  The big defenseman put up huge production this year with 22 points from the blue line.  A top earner for TPE as well, the Monarchs have their blue liner of the future in Leclerc.  This was a no brainer when he was not picked first and will get a high grade from anyone looking back at this draft.
3 . [Image: panthers.jpg] Los Angeles Panthers - Sean Gatez - SewingWithNancy - Sean Gatez may have been a bit of a reach here with the third pick considering he was ninth in TPE production for his class.  The negative 18 on the season is a major concern as you expect more from a top pick.   He is going to need to invest some serious TPE into his defensive skills over the next season or two before he gets called up.  The good news is he does earn at a high rate so there is plenty of time to get things right with the build.
4 . [Image: specters.png] New Orleans Specters - Vlastislav Malik - Leafs1997 - Not sure why this pick got dropped off of my list, my apologies to Leafs and Vlastislav Malik.  The Specters decided to go with the Right Winger from Kelowna who put up some decent numbers last season in the Juniors with four goals and eight assists.  Certainly there was some players who produced more than him but he is the eighth highest TPE earner in his class and will certainly benefit from playing on a better team in the future.  With as many high draft picks that Kelowna had this year though, I would hope that team plays better next season so expect his stats to improve.
5 . [Image: jets.png] Winnipeg Jets - Dwayne Gretzky - 3lewsers - Dwayne was picked right about where he was for TPE earned, just one pick ahead of his TPE spot.  The winger will hope to get some more playing time this season for the Berzerkers so he can build on his skills.  It will be a few seasons before he sees the SHL but he is definitely a quality player.
6 . [Image: jets.png] Winnipeg Jets - Freyja Hellstrom - Calliope - A bit of a reach if you only look at TPE where he ranks 12 in his class but it does not look so bad when you realize that he put up some of the best production in the class.  He put up 21 points on 13 goals and 7 assists which was among the top in his class.  Carolina will look to get some more production like this next season and the Jets will be happy to see it.
7 . [Image: pride-new.png] San Francisco Pride - Ruggs McOooh - Ruggsy  - Ruggs was picked just about at his TPE draft slot.  The defenseman was counted on to play top minutes for Colorado and put up 12 points on two goals and ten assists.  You would expect that he will continue to shine for the Raptors next year while the Pride will be hoping to have him up on their team in a couple seasons.
8 . [Image: panthers.jpg] Los Angeles Panthers - Jari Heikkinen - Allegiant  - Another big time point producer on the blue line, the Panthers got a 20 point scorer in Jari.  He can bring a physical aspect to his game as well which will translate nicely to the SHL.  Expectations are that he will play a few more seasons in the juniors and then be ready to take on some third pairing duties for the Panthers.  A possible power play quarterback once he fully develops.
9 . [Image: wolfpack4.png]  New England Wolfpack - Brennan Huff - Jayrome  - This was an interesting pick as Huff ranks 22nd in TPE in his draft class.  He put up decent scoring production from the left wing with six goals and six assists good enough for 12 points.  Where he starts to lose his shine is when you see he was a minus 20 on the season.  He played on a terrible Kelowna team that had a really bad goal differential so it was not all on him.
10 . [Image: wolfpack4.png] New England Wolfpack - Jon St. Ark - Arkz - The Wolfpack back up their reach on the 9th pick with the top goalie prospect in the draft and the number one TPE earner through the season.  This guy is a beast in net, clearly dominating the juniors and will be in a great position to help the SHL club in a matter of a few seasons.  Expect to see Jon St. Ark frustrating a lot of teams and goal scorers in the SHL for years to come.  Probably the steal of the draft at number 10.
11 . [Image: inferno.png] Atlanta Inferno - Pablo Salvatici - Jepox - Another pick that fell nicely to Atlanta here, Pablo currently sitting in the seven spot for most TPE in the class.  16 points on the season with nine goals and seven assists.  Really solid player who if he keeps earning like this will be a big contributor to the expansion franchise down in Atlanta.
12 . [Image: specters.png] New Orleans Specters - Cian McFelter - Titan  - 21st in his class for TPE, Cian is another player who had to suffer on a bad team in Kelowna.  Despite that, he was one of the only bright spots on this team and their clear top scorer with 25 points on eight goals and 17 assists.  A rough minus 17 for the season but that is not surprising for anyone on that team.  It will be interesting to see if this was just sim luck or if Cian will continue to produce at this level.
13 . [Image: Rage-Emote.png] Manhattan Rage - Matty Sandeen - TheBigSandeenie - Matty plays defense for the Berzerkers and had an ok season.  Finishing with 13 points on eight goals and five assists but with a poor minus 16 rating, he will look to improve in some specific areas.  One of those areas is puck possession.  He gave away the puck 36 times while only taking away the puck 10 times which probably had a lot to do with why his plus minus was so low.  Some investment of TPE there will do wonders for him.
14 . [Image: dragons.png] Calgary Dragons - Luukas Lilja - Retuperkele  - The Carolina center Luukas Lilja had a solid season in the juniors as well.  Putting up 19 points with an amazing 17 assists, he will look to be a playmaker at the next level, helping to facilitate for a line mate that can score.  He's pretty far down the TPE list at 26 so he will also need to make that up if he can.
15 . [Image: blizzard.png] Edmonton Blizzard - Rude Sniff - Dude  - The winner of the name of the draft, Rude Sniff is an absolute steal for Edmonton at the 15 pick.  Sitting at fourth in his class in TPE production, I have no idea how this guy slipped this far.  A solid defenseman who put up 10 points in his rookie campaign and there is no doubt he will continue to get better.  Really nice work from the Blizzard and lucky that he dropped this far.
16 . [Image: specters.png] New Orleans Specters - Bas O'Bigber - Sopath - Sitting just outside of the top 10 in TPE at 13, Bas had a very nice rookie campaign.  The Left Winger scored nine times and added 13 assists for a total of 22 points.  He was even on the season for plus minus as well.  It will be exciting to see how he progresses this year.
17 . [Image: stampede.png] Buffalo Stampede - Anton Mihailov - Mr. Finland  - This pick is pretty much slotted right where it should be at 17 with him being in that same position for TPE.  Only one goal and seven assists though and a terrible minus 16.  He's going to have to work on his game to be ready for the next level.  A project for sure.
18 . [Image: specters.png] New Orleans Specters - Robert Feltersnatch - Roamus  - Feltersnatch is said to have hands like a god.  He can work down the middle, and has been known to find a crack or two in the defense to exploit.  He definitely knows how to go deep in to the zone and score as evidenced by his four goals and seven assists on a terrible Kelowna team.  It will be exciting for the female fans in the stands every time he comes on the ice.

It was an exciting first round and there was still a ton of highly rated players on the board for round two.  I do not think I have it in me to write any more media but who knows, maybe I will knock out another one for round two.  Either way, some great players taken and some of these guys will be the future of the league in a few seasons time.  Some will become deadbeat inactives and their GMs will questioned but for the most part, they have shown that they earn TPE and are active members.
