Roderic Banes was selected 25th overall in the S59 Entry Level Draft by the Carolina Kraken. In four preseason games he totallted 24 minutes of ice time, 1 Assists, for a total of +1 overall. When asked about his preseason performance, he had this to say:
"I'm obviously happy, but not satisfied. I mean to really kick things into high gear once the regular season starts. I'm new to the sport and the team, and I'm still finding my feet. Training is really important at this stage, and I take it seriously. I know antioxidants are super important for health, so I try to hold my breath for at least 10 minutes per day. I've gotten up to around a minute each set!" Day One of the season saw them play 3 games, where he notched 2 assists in 33 minutes of ice time. "This is feeling better. The 4th line is gelling nicely. We're not looking to just eat up minutes for the big guys to rest. We are generating offence. We are driving play, aiming to be a viable scoring line. Me and B Square are both newbies, and guys are going to underestimate us. We plan to capitalize on that." Day Two brought a regulation loss at the hands of the Maine Timber, and a shootout loss against Nevada. "I Need to work on my two-way game game, start playing more defense. I had a bad game but these things happen, and I'm looking forward to working with feedback from the coaches and getting back out there." Day Three brought three wins and a loss. Roderic continued to put up around 1 assist per game on the fourth line, averaging 11 minutes of ice time. "I'm feeling good now, trying to dial in my shot. I see it improving a lot this season. Shooting on guys like Osada and RART every day in practice is rough. They fight for every save, make us realy work for it." Day Four saw Roderic tally his first goal in the SMJHL in a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Whalers. "I feel like I am settled in to the team now. We're gelling, and starting to get in each others heads when it comes to making plays like that." Day six saw a victory over the highly-ranked Colorado "It feels like we're hitting out stride. We can take wins from the best teams in the league. I have confidence in the group to get the job done." Days 7-10 saw reduced production from Roddy B and the fourth line. " My production has been dropping off a little, but I feel I'm maintaining dependable play, helping out offensively. Making efforts through the midpoint of the season to improve two way game, work on where I can be a liability. At the end of the day that's what the rookie year is about: showing what I can do but really elevating my game. So far, we've been able to stand toe to toe with the top guys in the league and I now know where I need to improve to help the team take it the post-season." Day Fourteen brought big game, and saw Roderic awarded his first Star of the Game Award. He was awarded the Third Star for his 2 assist game in a big 7-2 victory over the Nevada Battleborn. "This is a big win for the team, and for me personally. This feels like a validation of everything I've done over the past year, to get ready for my rookie season. Now it really feels like I'm making the impart I wanted to on the ice, and starting to make waves in the league. Go kraken!" Day 18 brought mixed results, and Roderic was subdued in his media availability: "I am still contributing, the team continues to fight through the losses. My biggest fear at this point is to become a liability, to let the team down." The Regular Season ended with Roderic ranked 14th among rookies, finishing the season with 5 goals and 17 assists. After the post-game team meeting had ended, Roderic had this to say: "I feel I have the potential to be a 40 point player in this league, and that is my next goal. I had a good time here, the team did a lot to make me feel welcome, make the adjustment easier. I'm proud to be a Carolina Kraken." We followed up and asked Roderic to look ahead to the post season and give us his thoughts. "This is where it counts, really. We've shown through the regular season that when we play our game and stick to it, we can beat any team in this league. We have amazing goaltending behind us and I feel we are in excellent shape for a solid post-season run." Roderic Banes did not accomplish everything he set out to do in his rookie season, however he has made an impact and carved out a roster spot on a team with a rookie-heavy lineup. Next season should spell great things for Roddy the Body and his young teammates. Keep following here for more updates on off-season training and preparation for Season 60. Roderic wished to include a special farewell to Luukas Lilja, as he takes the big step up to the SHL to join the Calgary Dragons. Wishing him all the best and plenty of biscuits and cheddar in his Season.
