With the SMJHL Trade deadline come and gone, and all the teams finished with their wheeling and dealing for the S62 season I figured I’d do my first deep dive on the Buyers/Sellers of this deadline… However, I realized being a junior league there wasn’t a whole lot of trades and I already had set up a spreadsheet, so here we are. As such I decided to include all signings since the start of the season as well. Consider this a post deadline ‘season transactions’ wrap-up.
I pulled all moves (trades or signings) from the start of the season after games began to the trade deadline this past Saturday, so I used Monday August 30th to Saturday September 18th as a window. This represents what teams have made moves in the S62 season after building their rosters in the offseason. The Data:
Plus the signings:
There was a total activity of 20 assets changing teams with 15 moves (2 trades and 13 signings). ![]() ![]() A total of 16 players have found new homes this season, while 4 draft picks have exchanged hands, which only included one first round pick in this upcoming draft. So far this season, Great Falls has been the most active team, making 1 trade and signing 4 players. While Kelowna, Nevada, Newfoundland, Quebec City, Regina, St. Louis, and Vancouver have all stayed quiet this season yet to make any roster moves. Sellers: ![]()
The Grizzlies here are only one of two teams that could be considered a seller. As a new expansion team, they brought in several players to fill out the roster. Then as the deadline approached, they sold off one of their left shot defencemen in Janne Virtanen. They were able to get an additional 1st round pick in this year’s entry draft for the 6 foot 2, 600 TPE defenceman, although they had to throw in a 2nd round pick in next years draft to get the deal done. ![]()
Detroit looked to be the only other seller, as they also made a trade, selling off two of their forwards for a pair of picks in the upcoming draft. Buyers: ![]()
Now on the other side of the coin, the Raptors who are currently sit third in the league decided to spend their first-round pick to bring in the defenceman, Janne Virtanen. Virtanen: The 6’2 defenceman is a left shot but prefers to play on the right. Combine the 31 points in 50 games this season with 90 hits, and this big boy likes to throw his body around while pushing the play up the ice. Although a Finnish player, his Canadian namesake may call his character into question, but Colorado is hoping he will steady the blueline for a playoff push. ![]()
Late afternoon of deadline day the Kraken pulled the trigger to give up a couple mid round picks and bring in two forwards, adding to the depth up front before the trade market froze for the S62 season. Zukal: This is a well-rounded power forward, currently sits with 36 points in 50 games and clocking in at 240 lbs, the Kraken brass hope this adds some size as the games get tougher into the SMJHL playoffs. Barengrub: This checking center only has 8 goals so far this season, but with a 73 Defence Game Rating this looks like a solid depth pick-up that helps to solidify Carolina’s D-zone. Hawk: This was a UDFA signing a week before the deadline, an American right shot defenceman that adds to Carolina’s depth as they head into the playoffs. ![]()
Though making only one move, Anchorage finds themselves middle of the pack, and looked to upgrade their goaltending by signing Dominik Tretyak. Tretyak: Since being brought in four days before the trade deadline, this sub six-foot Russian goalie has started 16 games posting a great 2.06 GAA. Tretyak hopes to settle into the starter gig, and Anchorage hopes they can ride a new rookie goalie into the playoffs. Conclusion: With the September 18th trade deadline now behind us and we head into the playoffs, we will see if SMJHL GMs made the right move for playoff success or if staying quiet is ultimately the best move. Now what does this all mean? – I don’t know, it’s a junior league, who cares.
