The Season 61 SMJHL Entry Draft brought in a plethora of goalies to the league. With the season just over halfway done, let’s take a look into how everyone has performed so far. This is purely a stats analysis and does not include anything that isn’t on-ice.

Here are the goalie rankings in order (lower is better): Lord Skrolk - 2.6 Lord Skrolk has definitely been the top performer on the ice so far this season. He is ranked in the top 5 in every category and the top 2 in 3 of the 5. What’s most impressive is having the second most games played yet only being 5th in losses. He is definitely a reason why Kelowna has had an impressive season so far. Vincent Catalano - 3.4 Vincent Catalano is the biggest surprise goalie of the draft. Being drafted in the 5th round by St. Louis, Catalano has smashed expectations. While it’s only a small sample size of 8 games, he’s only lost one game and has the top save % and is second in GAA. I can’t wait to see more of him play. Brick Wall - 4 Brick Wall has seen some of the most action out of all the goalies here. Wall has earned the starter role and has played in the 3rd most games. While losing the 8th most, this is par for the course with an expansion team’s 1st season. He’s top 4 in every other stat, which is impressive and shows he’s a solid choice in net. Hugh Jass - 4.8 While Hugh Jass has played in the most games so far this season as Detroit’s starter, he also has the most losses. He’s getting wins though, tying for 2nd in that category. The rookie starter’s stats should continue to improve with time on a struggling Detroit team. Rebecca Montagne - 5 Montagane, the starter for the expansion Regina Elk, was the first goalie selected in the draft. Being a rookie starter for an expansion team is tough but Rebecca has done a solid job. While stats are middle of the road, I think she will show improvement as the team continues to grow. Recently Tired - 5.4 Recently Tired is another goalie in a backup position to an entrenched starter. While they don’t have a lot of numbers to go off of, Tired is up and down, ranking 1st in GAA but 9th in save %. Tired has some time to balance the stats out before taking over full time for a great Colorado team. Conner McLavish - 6.4 Conner McLavish has unexpectedly played in more games than the starter for the Elk. This has proven to not be the best decision, as he ranks in the bottom half of every stat. Hopefully, with time, Conner can improve his stats, possibly with more rest in-between starts. Skating Dino - 7.2 Skating Dino, while playing for a great QCC team, has not had much playing time this season. They’re playing behind an entrenched starter, so I will be anxious to see what Dino can do with some quality playing time. Jeremy Kendell - 7 Kendell, the last goalie taken in the draft, has been a quiet backup for Great Falls. Jeremy ranks in the back half for 4 of the 5 stats and with only 2 wins on the season, we will wait to see if he can make some more noise in future seasons. Anzelms Krastiņš - 7.6 It’s been a rough ride for Krastiņš, so far. While playing on an Anaheim team that is in a complete rebuild, Anzelms ranks near the bottom in 3 of the 5 stats. Even though this hasn’t been a great season, the good news is that the team is improving, posting a 5-3-2 record in the last 10 games. Krastiņš is also getting some good on-ice experience, which will help when he takes the reigns as the team’s starter in the next season or two. (599 words) ![]() Registered Senior Member |
