Good, Bad, and Goodenough's Season 62 Recap Stuff
#1

Howdy folks, I’ve been a little inactive this season, but I’m back at it and finally caught up with the ongoings of SMJHL S62.  Now that I’m back, it appears that life in the show is expensive and I need a little fake hockey money, so I thought I’d look at the best and worst games for Gordie Goodenough’s S62 season and second season with the Regina Elk.  Searching through the stats I picked out two noteworthy or otherwise unremarkable games:

Best Game:
Game 44: QCC (6) VS REG (4):
  • Game Ratings: 77/71/76
  • Stat Line: 1G/1A, +3, 2 SOG, 2 HIT, 1TK, FO: 62%

Arguable Gordie’s best game in a season filled with disappointing games came in Game 44 with a 6-4 lose to Quebec City. With a 71 and 76 offense and defensive rating respectively, the coach was happy with his individual performance if not the team as whole.

Goodenough showed up on the scoresheet with a goal and an assist (the third of only 4 multi point games on the season), while contributing on the defensive side of the game with a takeaway, 62% in the faceoff circle and finishing with a +3.

The game begins quick with a Gordie goal just 3 minutes in while the ice is still wet, however Quebec City responds with 3 goals in 3 minutes to close out the 1st period. Tempers flared in the second, with Chelios Jr. and Gardner shooting the ole dukes, Lucas Arnold getting a game misconduct, Yankovic running the goalie, and finally Jaeger Jones had enough fighting Garros. In the chaos, the teams traded powerplay goals and then Aksel Fiske added a goal in the last minute to put Quebec City up 5-2 going into the third. The Citadelles added another powerplay goal in the third before the Elks attempted to mount a comeback, but feel short.  Goodenough got credited for 2 more hits and an assist in the third, but also took an embarrassing diving penalty trying to show up the refs.

“I’m proud of the way the team stuck together out there, but we as a team – I’ve got to be better to get that W” – Goodenough in a post game interview

Honorable Mentions:
Game 18 VS STL (6-5 L): 70/66/75 – 1G/1A, +2, 2SOG, 2 Hit, 45% FO
Game 33 VS DET (7-3 L): 67/60/66 – 1G/0A, +2, 5 SOG, 91% FO
Game 41 VS STL (6-1 W): 73/63/83 – 0G/1A, +3, 3 SOG, 1HIT, 2 TK, 38% FO
Game 65 VS GFG (4-3 L): 70/61/70 – 1G, +1, 1SOG, 7 BS, 2 HIT, 76% FO
Worst Game:
Game 10: VAN (4) vs REG (1):
  • Game Rating: 43/50/33
  • Stat Line: 0P, -2, 1 SOG, 1 Missed Shot, 1 GV, FO: 41%

In the middle of an early season seven-game losing streak, Goodenough did nothing to help the cause with a -2 in 16 minutes of ice time.  That 16 minutes was a generous amount given by the coach with a giveaway, missed shot, and a below 50% faceoff percentage added to the game sheet.  After this game it wasn’t until around the 25-game mark until Goodenough started earning the trust of the coaching staff and begin registering upwards of 18 minutes per game on average.

This particular game was nothing pretty for Gordie or the Elks, up against the team who would eventually become the top team in the juniors.  Before the game was 5 minutes old the Whalers were up 2-0 with goals from both Kroustis and Sunfish.  The second brought nothing special with icing after icing as the Elks struggled to transition the puck against Vancouver.  Playing on a line with Kentaro Kikuchi and Sam Siege the trio did everything to stop the bleeding with hits and blocked shots but couldn’t generate any offense. A “holding the fort” strategy combined with the goaltending of Montagne the second period remained uneventful.  Against a top team in the SMJHL an uneventful second period seemed like a victory as Jones brought it within one goal early in the third.  However, a quick response from Vancouver shortly after combined with an empty net goal later pushed the game out of reach.

And I guess the overlords agreed with me:

“Yeah – I mean yeah, that’s good group over there and they played us tough – Real tough. I thought we did some good things out there as a group, got pucks in deep, but there’s lots of work to be done – lots of games left.  We have to be better” – Goodenough in a post game interview
(dis)Honorable Mentions:
Game 3 VS ANA (4-1 L): 55/52/52 – 0P, -1, 2 SOG, 1 GV, 50% FO
Game 14 VS NBB (7-2 L): 44/52/31 – 0P, -1. 2 SOG, 0 GV, 50% FO
Game 55 VS GFG (7-5 L): 54/55/47 – 0P, 0, 1 SOG, 3 MS, 54% FO
Game 58 VS GFG (7-5 L): 46/51/33 – 0P, -4, 1 GV, 70% FO

Well, that’s that.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays folks Smile

Well I just screenshot the streams and enter the stats for my player into an excel lol.  I think if you have FHM you could probably do something with that index file they post, but not sure.
