Chicago Syndicate team outing goes awry with illness

The Chicago Syndicate are coming off the highs of one of their best seasons ever, having won the Presidents’ Trophy, as well as the Challenge Cup. However, they have not yet seen as much success this season. They’re currently sitting 12th out of 20th in the league, and 2nd in the Central Division behind the Winnipeg Aurora by 10 points (with Chicago having 4 games in hand).

To get the team fired up, the Syndicate GMs - JNH and Corey - decided to give the team a little bit of a vacation on the way to an upcoming road trip with the Panthers. They decided to give the team free reign over LA for a few days to do whatever they would like.

The team touched down at Los Angeles International Airport and were happy to finally get a bit of a break from the grind of the season, being 26 games in and not having the best showing, or as a good of a showing as they would have liked. After spending an hour trying to get Ubers out of LAX, they finally made it to their hotel where they spent the first day relaxing. Coming from Chicago, the hot weather and sun were a bit of a shock to the system, especially when you spend so much time on the ice. However, the players were not paying much attention to the heat, which may have proved to be costly later on in the trip.

After a good first day of relaxation at the hotel by the pool, the team decided to visit some of the more tourist-y activities of Los Angeles. They ended up visiting many of the typical spots, some went to museums, others went to the area around the Staples Center, LA Live, or the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The team decided to end it all off by watching the sunset at the Griffith Observatory, so they really hit up many of the cliche activities that they could have. They decided to finish the night off with a night on the town in Beverly Hills.

By this time, a couple of the players thought that they were dealing with some issues with the heat. They speculated that it may have been heat exhaustion, but of course, none of them were doctors so they did not really know what it actually was. To stave off some of the dehydration, a lot of the players started chugging Gatorade and various other electrolyte solutions. The dry throat was starting to get to them.

The next day was a pretty big event for the team. One of the funny things about the Chicago players is that they actually have quite a few fans of K-pop on the team, which many of the fans would not have guessed about the Syndicate. So that night, the players decided that they would go to the TWICE concert that was happening that night at the Banc of California Stadium. This was an especially notable night, as many of the biggest K-pop and TWICE fans did not ever think that they would be able to see a TWICE performance outside of Korea. This was also TWICE’s first ever stadium concert at an outdoor venue. Taking in a great concert under the great LA weather was sure to be a treat for the K-pop fans of the team.

A bunch of the players who had been dealing with the heat exhaustion decided to relax at the hotel to prepare for the concert. They did not feel like being sick by the time they got to the concert. Finally, the time to go to the concert rolled around, and the team made their way over in various ways.  They had a great time at the concert, and the team got to hear a lot of their favourite songs that have been blasted in the locker room a ton. The team went out for drinks, then made their way back to the hotel. This is when things started to go south, when in addition to having a dry throat, some of the players started to have a mild cough… so some of the players began to speculate that it was not just heat exhaustion that they were dealing with. In addition, some of the players mentioned having a mild headache as well. This did not seem very good as the players had planned to go to Disneyland the next day. The players decided that they would see how they felt in the morning before making the drive down to Anaheim to visit Disneyland.

The next day came, and most of the players woke up feeling better, so they decided to go down to Disneyland after all. Once they got there, the weather was not too bad, but as the day continued, the sun pored down on them, as they had to wait in line for hours to be able to visit any of the attractions. This definitely took a toll on a bunch of the players. It got so bad that some of the players decided to head back to the hotel early, and decided to rest for the rest of the day, when they had originally planned to stay at the park until around midnight when it closed.

So finally, after much speculation between the players back at the hotel, they got some COVID tests, and guess what, they ended up being positive. The players were now quite worried about what would happen with their future games. Luckily, they were likely to be almost done with the illness and would probably not see too much of a negative effect to their performance on the ice. After all, this trip was supposed to boost their morale and help them out on the ice.

Currently, five of the Chicago Syndicate players are sidelined, but are likely to be available for their next game. The team has not made the name of those affected available, since they likely will be able to play in the next run of games. Thankfully, Syndicate had quite a large break in the schedule when they decided to make this road trip, so there should not be too much difficulty in fielding a team for their next game, or any risk to any of the other teams that they meet on the ice. But for now, the team is hoping for a speedy recovery for the players affected. It is very unfortunate that the bit of vacation that the team had was supposed to improve the team’s performance in the future, but may have ended up having the opposite effect. We will have to wait and see how this trip may have affected the next games that the Syndicate will play.
