S68 Day 1 - Reviewing BUF @ NEW
#1

Stampede Buffalo Stampede @ New England Wolfpack Wolfpack
Final Score: 5 - 2

1st period, 05:49 left on the clock
Up until this point there hadn’t been a very exciting game. And with that I mean there weren’t many dangerous chances. We saw some power play action, but ultimately nothing to write home about. And honestly, that continued even as the first goal of the game took place. Buffalo started a normal breakout play via Steve Harrington who sent it into the neutral zone, to Jaska. Jaska then slowly but surely navigated into our defensive zone, locking eyes with me as I held my distance but kept in front of him. And then I blinked, and he scored… This was honestly a pretty fantastic wrist shot. A quick move to the left and then he pressed the trigger. Before I could turn my head the referee blew the whistle for a goal. I thought I covered him well, but he proved me wrong.

Buffalo (1)-0 New England

1st period, 04:03 left on the clock
A zone clear from our own Koivu made its way all the way down the ice and the ref blew for an icing. We won the face off and tried to move up and out on the left side, but Jaska(again) got in the way and was able to wrestle the puck to Golden Face. He then took the shot from the point and how it got through the three of us in front of the net I’ll never know. It was me, Steve and KEKW pushing each other around. And I’m sure that also is what made it slip through Olof’s grasp. He couldn’t see anything. With either of us able to block it, it went straight in nice and slow.

Buffalo (2)-0 New England

1st period, 01:23 left on the clock
By now Buffalo had really turned things up. The first two goals clearly gave them plenty of confidence, and at the end of the period they practically lived in our zone. Sending puck after puck at our net and poor Olof. Their third goal of the game came from Konstantin moving through the middle of the neutral zone covered closely by our own Borje. It got a little too crowded for Konstantin so he passed it over to Chimkin. Unfortunately we then focused a little too hard on Chimkin and left Konstantin completely open in the middle of our zone. Big mistake. The two of them started their own tic-tac-toe game and in the end they were able to score.

Buffalo (3)-0 New England

3rd period, 10:39 left on the clock
Through the second period and half of the third there was a lot of back and forth. After the first period break we’d regained some confidence and discipline after some tough love from coach Luke. We had several good changes but nothing came out of it. Until now. After keeping solid possession numbers in the offensive zone we were thrown back into our own end. But after winning the face off Towelie started a breakout. He found Tsunami on the left side with barely anyone in front of him. However, Buffalo’s Billy Brooks was quick to get in front and there was some wrestling for the puck just inside their blue line. Jonny stayed strong and was able to get the puck over to Outdoor Truck who one-timed it right by Tretyak!

Buffalo 3-(1) New England

3rd period, 04:34 left on the clock
As we neared the end of the game we were lucky enough to see a beautiful play from our players that we’d done in practice before the game. Ivan won the offensive face off to his right where Makrus was lined up. Makrus sent it straight back to Moritz who without hesitating put all his power behind the puck sending it just inside the far post! It was quite the sight. And now it was a one-goal game!

Buffalo 3-(2) New England

3rd period, 02:36 left on the clock
Unfortunately our hopes and dreams weren’t allowed to live for too long. Two minutes later Tommy Thompson made his way into our zone together with Kaarlo. Thanks to an nonoptimal substitution we were all lined up in one long row of players from one side of the boards to the other. Which unsurprisingly doesn’t provide the best coverage. Tommy and Kaarlo were able to skate past and pass around half of us. Before we’d gotten back into our proper positions it was a 2-on-2 situation. I had Kaarlo in my sights while Ivan fought with Tommy for space in front of Olof. Both of us lost our respective battles. Kaarlo was able to get the puck in front of the net where Tommy just got enough stick on it to put it in next to Olof.

Buffalo (4)-2 New England

3rd period, 00:21 left on the clock
Just like in my previous review this one ends with an open net goal. We had some good chances during the final two minutes, but all Buffalo needed was a single breakout. When they got it they didn’t mess it up. Which allowed Konstantin to score his second of the night.
