After a 5 game series against the Nevada Battleborn, the Anchorage Armada advanced to the second round of the playoffs where they will face off against the Detroit Falcons. How do the Armada match up against the #1 team in the regular season?
Overview / TPE Metrics:
Detroit :
Forwards - 309 tpe average
Defenseman - 363 tpe average
Starting Goalie - 425 tpe
It is clear to see how the Detroit Falcons were able to secure their spot on top of the league by how much talent they have defensively and while they might be lacking in offensive tpe when compared to their defense, they still were able to finish first in the league in goals for per game with an average of 4.26. This goes to show they still have immense offensive output on the ice despite as such.
Anchorage :
Forwards - 352 tpe average
Defenseman - 259 tpe average
Starting Goalie - 425 tpe
In comparison to Detroit, Anchorage have a very different team tpe distribution with an absolute stacked forward unit and a defenseman unit that looks to be a little lacking. Interestingly enough though, much like Detroit's surprise offensively, Anchorage has actually been better defensively than offensively. At least when you compare their GF and GA to the rest of the league.
Regular Season Matchups:
During the S69 regular season, the Anchorage Armada faced off against the Detroit Falcons 4 times. They would split the regular season series 2-2 against each other.
Game 1
Detroit Falcons 4-2 Anchorage Armada
In their first faceoff in the regular season, the Detroit Falcons took the win with a score of 4-2. In this first matchup, the Detroit Falcons really showed off their defensive prowess as despite scoring double the goals of Anchorage only put up 5 more shots on goal than them.
Game MVP: For me the MVP of this game was Detroit goalie, Jeff Newman who might have allowed 2 goals on 29 shots but was still able to have a save % of 0.930. This was crucial as the Falcons had a total of 21 penalty minutes (10 more than the Armada)
Game 2
Detroit Falcons 3-4 Anchorage Armada
In the second matchup of the season, the Armada were able to pull away to what looked to be a very close game all around. Both teams put up extremely similar team total numbers, having a small difference in pretty much every category outside of face off %. I think these first two games really go to show how closely these two played each other.
Game MVP: It is hard to really pinpoint one player from each team who had a standout performance so I will go with Anchorage forward Georg N'Zola who scored the game winning goal with just 7 minutes left in the 3rd.
Game 3
Anchorage Armada 1-6 Detroit Falcons
Unlike their last two matchups, this was an absolute blowout by the Detroit Falcons. Despite the obvious difference in goals, the Falcons had just 9 more shots than the Armada in what was both an offensive and defensive masterclass by the team overall.
Game MVP: I do want to give a shoutout to Detroit forward Bohdan Jarovsky who had an amazing game with 2g and 2a but I have to absolutely give this MVP to their backup goalie, Swiss Cheese to holding the Armada to just 1 goal off of 24 shots. Cheese was especially impressive down the stretch, blocking all 14 shots that Anchorage put up in the 3rd.
Game 4
Detroit Falcons 0-6 Anchorage Armada
After getting blown out in the last matchup, the Armada absolutely clapped back with a 6-0 performance. The Armada should be applauded for putting up 6 goals on just 20 shots but even more impressively, shutting down the Falcons offense who generated 30 shots on goal this game.
Game MVP: Undeniably the MVP of this game was Anchorage goalie, George Walsh.
Quick Summary
While the TPE numbers and regular season performance does put Detroit as a heavy favorite in this matchup, the way the regular season series went for these two teams suggests that they could be a lot closer than what those numbers say. Should make for a great second round playoff series!
