(This post was last modified: 06-16-2023, 02:13 PM by spidey. Edited 2 times in total.)

This is the first of the SHL redrafts we will be diving into as per popular request…by one person.  The first one is season 68’s SHL draft, I will only be looking into the first round of the Redraft as it will cover about 2/3rds of the active Members.  During this article we will look at the following:

- TOTAL TPE LEADER BOARD

TOP 3 BY POSITION:

GOALIE:

Tummy Hurts - 848 TPE - CHI

When you only make one pick in a draft it should be a good one, Chicago grabbed the best goalie available in the SHL draft.  Tummy Hurts has quietly been plugging away to slowly creep up into a true number 1.  The future in the crease is secured with Tummy Hurts for Chicago.

Jeff Newman - 790 TPE - MIN

Just a little behind Jeff Newman is making his way into becoming recognized as one of the future star goalies in the SHL.  He has done a good amount of work and stayed consistent with his training to allow himself to earn an SHL position.

Walter Sobchak - 685 TPE - SFP

Walter is the last of the top tier goalies in this draft.  Walter is starting to fall behind but has time to build a solid career with a second effort in training.  He is seen as the Goalie of the future for the Pride and will be given every opportunity to take over the number one spot.

DEFENSE:

Filip Lund - 1028 TPE - NOLA

The dedication and work that Lund has put into his craft is fantastic.  Only 5 seasons into his career and he has eclipsed 1000 TPE mark!  This is not an easy task.  Only 9 players in this draft class have done this so far.  A true number one defender of the future in the making.

Chris Valentine - 1028 TPE - TEX

Well look who tied Lund for top Defender, shared number one.  With another incredible showing of dedication.

Nathaniel Barca - 1025 - PHI

No slouch sitting at number 3 and just 3 TPE behind the top defensive earners.  All three of these players showing why there were first round draft selections in this year as they build towards successful careers.

RIGHT WING:

Erik Bergmark - 1041 TPE - BAL

The second overall pick has done everything to prove the Platoon made a smart choice in drafting this winger.  The second most TPE earned and a franchise piece for the future.

Ekaterina Valieva - 958 TPE - BAL

The second best right winger in this draft is quite an accomplishment for the Russian.  Ending up on Baltimore with Bergmark means Valieva will be living in the shadow of Erik, but the two of them will form two of the best right wingers in the league in the future.

Ignacio Garza - 848 TPE - SFP

There becomes a significant gap between the top earners and third best right winger.  This is not to say Ignacio is doing poorly, he is well above average in earning TPE with a long successful career ahead, but 200 TPE is quite a jump.

CENTER:

Cale Salad - 1049 TPE - PHI

I have no doubts, if Cale Salad was not GM of Philadelphia he would have been a top 5 pick.  He is Mr. TPE in this draft class and the dedication to this site and to his team is second to none.

Viktor Hargreeves - 1029 TPE - SFP

I don’t think you can call a top 10 pick a draft day steal, but San Francisco must have felt that way grabbing Hargreeves who has been a force for this team.  His dedication put him as the third highest earner in the league.

Jarrod Lakemore - 1002 TPE - MAN

I almost feel bad for Jarrod, in most draft classes he would be in the top 5 or so earners, but this one is so top heavy he just squeaks into the top 10.  An impressive showing by the 2nd round pick.

LEFT WING:

Derek Martin - 1014 TPE - LAP

What hasn’t Derek Martin done?  The guy was a junior superstar for the majority of his career.  His love and dedication to the game have shine through as he earns the top Left Winger in this draft.  He is a future first liner and potential franchise piece.

Marton Diehm - 990 TPE - TEX

Just a few TPE behind Derek is Marton who has done well to keep pace with the top earners.  There is no doubt of his potential and future in the SHL as he continues to improve in Texas and will be earning top line minutes in no time.

Adam Liebold - 969 TPE - BAL

You can’t help but admire the Baltimore draft.  They capture 3 of the top wingers in this draft, each are at or approaching 1000 TPE.  Liebold will be joining the bright future ahead for the Platoon pairing with either Bergmark or Valieva.

REDRAFT:

For the redraft, positions will stay the same, but the top earners will move up into the redraft.  It has nothing to do with personalities or desire to play for a certain team.  It will only be about the best player moving to where they should have been drafted.  (Only exception, I try to keep an eye out for.  A GM stays in their draft spot).

Round 1

1. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Monarchs) - Nash Topalo – 1010 TPE - Defense

Buffalo made a great selection in Nash; he is part of the 1000 TPE club and done everything you could hope for with the first overall pick as he develops into a top player.

Redraft: Filip Lund - 1028 TPE – UP 12 SPOTS

This could have been Lund or Valentine; I am picking Lund based on his slightly earlier draft selection.  Both are excellent choices and would do well as a first overall pick for the Stampede.

2. Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Erik Bergmark – 1041 TPE – Right Wing

Baltimore with the second overall pick made a fantastic selection grabbing one of the best players available in this year’s draft class filling in a future need on the wing and a franchise forward.

Redraft: Erik Bergmark - 1041 TPE – NO MOVEMENT

What a pick by Baltimore grabbing one of the very best the SMJHL had to offer and nailing that second overall pick.  There was no one in this class (That was available).

3. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (via Renegades) - Derek Martin – 1014 TPE – Left Wing

Looking for a franchise piece as well, Los Angeles went to the other wing to find their future star.  Martin has done everything right to prove they made a great selection at number 3.

Redraft: Derek Martin - 1014 TPE – NO MOVEMENT

As far as left wingers go, Los Angeles hit the nail on the head and grabbed a top winger, best left winger, and part of the 1000 club.  A phenomenal pick by the scouting department in Los Angeles.

4. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Sebastien Regazzoni – 977 TPE - Center

Hamilton had the opportunity to boost their prospect cupboard with a chance at a great player.  They did just that.  I am positive they are happy with Regazzoni who has been pacing well with his career earnings.

Redraft: Viktor Hargreeves - 1029 TPE – UP 3 SPOTS

If they could do it over again, would they have picked the second best center in the draft class?  Maybe, maybe not but in our redraft they grab the talented center and make off like bandits as they go from a good earner to the best center available.

5. Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via Blizzard) - Alexander Minaj – 1022 TPE – Defense

One of the best defenders in this draft class the Monarchs must have felt like they picked up an amazing piece for their future.  Cleared the 1000 TPE club and just 3 TPE behind the top 3.  Really, it was an amazing pick here…but if we were to perfect it.

Redraft: Chris Valentine - 1028 TPE – UP 11 SPOTS

While it is not a big jump in TPE, so I am guessing the Monarchs are not crying over this miss Chris has earned the jump as one of the top 5 Earners in the entire draft class.  The difference is negligible, but it is well earned by Chris.

6. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - John Brown – 961 – Defense

Josh Brown is a junior superstar winning a few awards for his defensive abilities and he has done well to keep pace with other in his draft class.  This was not a bad pick by Tampa.

Redraft: Nathaniel Barca - 1025 – UP 3 SPOTS

As good as Brown is and has been, Nathaniel has worked harder at his craft.  He jumps up 3 spots into and nabs his place as the third defender off of the board.  This changes from a great pick to a phenomenal pick.

7. pride San Francisco Pride (via Wolfpack) - Viktor Hargreeves

Like I said earlier, San Francisco must have felt like they acquired a draft day steal picking up Hargreeves in the number 7 spot.  A Top 3 earner and the best center available.  Unfortunately for the Pride he is gone in the redraft.

Redraft: Jarrod Lakemore - 1002 TPE – UP 21 SPOTS

What a steal for the Stampede.  Lakemore jumps up 21 spots to the Pride.  As they would still do well in this draft with a future top line center, just not the best one available.

8. Stampede Buffalo Stampede – FORFEIT

Hmmm, forfeit stays a forfeit in this draft.  Buffalo more than makes up for this lost pick with an amazing second round choice in the real draft.

9. Forge Philadelphia Forge (via syndicate) - Nathaniel Barca – 1025 TPE – Defense

Philadelphia pulled off one hell of a pick here, grabbing the third best defender as the fourth one picked.  They looked really smart here, but in the redraft Nathaniel has already been claimed.

Redraft: Alexander Minaj - 1022 TPE – DOWN 4 SPOTS

The fall for Minaj is not far and the difference in talent is negligible essentially the Forge get the exact same talent back at the exact same pick.  Great job by the Forge on their initial pick.

10. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (via Panthers) - Liam Logger – 449 TPE – Left Wing

You can’t help but feel this is the first real miss of this draft.  I am sure Liam came in blazing hot to earn the second pick within this draft.  Unfortunately for Liam and the Blizzard he did not live up to this draft position, falling well behind the rest of the class and a fringe SHL player.

Redraft: Marton Diehm - 990 TPE – UP 14 SPOTS

In the Redraft Edmonton does not make a mistake and they grab the second best left winger in the draft.  Sitting just below the 1000 club.  Marton would be making a big difference for the Edmonton Blizzard right now instead of being traded to Calgary like Liam.

11. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Forge) - Adrian O’Rugg – 873 TPE - Center

This was not a bad selection by the Platoon.  O’Rugg is stilling as the 4th best available center as time has passed.  But he has not kept pace with the top earners in this class.  In all likeliness O’Rugg will develop into a top 6 forward at some point in his career making this a solid but unspectacular choice.

Redraft: Sebastien Regazzoni - 977 TPE – DOWN 7 SPOTS

Sebastien proves to still be worthy of a first round spot even in the redraft and I am sure Baltimore would love to have the hard working center in their roster.  He would be a fairly significant jump in talent over o’Rugg helping them compete a little sooner.

12. pride San Francisco Pride - Ragnar Lothbrok – 813 TPE – Defense

This has to be considered a bit of a letdown for the Pride.  Ragnar had shown the ability to be a top defender and was pacing well.  Unfortunately he has fallen off and looks to be a career bottom 4 four defender at the SHL level unless he gets back soon.

Redraft: Lester Oiduser - 1016 TPE – UP 5 SPOTS

If they could do it over again would they still pick Ragnar?  I doubt it, they would jump on Lester who has been a force in the back end and a 1000 TPE earner.  Now the pride only dreams of a future of what if with Toasty/Lester pairing patrolling the blueline.

13. Specters New Orleans Specters - Filip Lund – 1028 TPE – Defense

NAILED IT!  New Orleans got their man and arguably the best the draft has to offer at his position.  Unfortunately drafting so well in the real draft means you fumble a bit in the redraft.

Redraft: Nash Topalo - 1010 TPE – DOWN 12 SPOTS

Fortunately for them, they do not fumble too far and select the originally drafted number 1 pick.  Nash would be a welcome addition to the team, and he would fill in nicely for Filip in a draft day swap.

14. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Dragons) - James Lutz – 942 TPE – Left Wing

James has been pacing well and sits 4th in left wingers in this draft class.  He has the makings of a top 6 player in short order in the SHL.  The Stampede did well with this selection.

Redraft: Adam Liebold - 969 TPE – UP 9 SPOTS

While I am sure the Stampede are happy with their pick, if they could get Liebold in the redraft they would be looking even better right now.  As Liebold has been out pacing Lutz and has the makings of a true 1st liner in the future.

15. Inferno Atlanta Inferno - Pete Aleman – INACTIVE – Defense

Atlanta bet on Pete to be one of the top earners in this year’s draft, but he has gone inactive and did not come anywhere near his true value.  If they could have this one as a do over I am sure they would not make this mistake again.

Redraft: John Brown – 961 TPE – DOWN 9 SPOTS

They would be ecstatic to get Brown at this spot.  A future top 4 defender with nothing but upside.  Brown would give the Inferno a big boost to their back end.

16. Renegades Texas Renegades (via Stars) - Chris Valentine – 1028 TPE - Defense

Looking back now, you can’t help but wonder how Chris Valentine fell this far down the draft.  While still a first round pick he is a top 4 earner in this draft class.  The Renegades made a phenomenal pick here.

Redraft: Nathan Meagher - 956 TPE – UP 6 SPOTS

While losing one of the premier talents in the redraft a consolation prize of Nathan Meagher is nothing to sneeze at.  He is a talented defender and would be a great player to add to their roster, as he grows into a SHL star.

17. Specters New Orleans Specters (via Patriotes) - Lester Oiduser – 1016 TPE - Defense

Another fantastic pick in a very deep defensive draft class.  Lester was a hell of a pickup and New Orleans will utilize him as their future star on the back end.  But with Lester being picked much earlier in the redraft New Orleans will be forced to grab someone else in this spot.

Redraft: Philip Fry - 943 TPE – UP 9 SPOTS

This is a suitable replacement for Lester, while Philip isn’t quite as far along as Lester is, he is a very talented defender that will be a welcome addition to the Saints back end.

18. Inferno Atlanta Inferno (via Aurora) - Alexis Texas – 505 – Goalie

This draft was not kind in the first rounds to the Inferno.  First Aleman, now Texas, both first round picks both have gone inactive.  Having one miss in the first few rounds of a draft can hurt a team’s pipeline but two in the first round is tough.

Redraft: Tummy Hurts – 805 TPE – UP 18 SPOTS

I can’t find it on the site, I think Teztify is Co-GM of Chicago, but because I can’t find it I am moving him up to the number one goalie selected.  Tummy should have been the first choice as he would have been the goalie of the future in Atlanta.

19. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (via Rage) - Guinness O’Bigbers – INACTIVE – Left Wing

Not to be out done by Atlanta Edmonton stepped up to the plate with another swing and a miss in the first round grabbing O’Bigbers with their second first round pick.  Another inactive if Edmonton had the chance to redo the pick in the redraft we believe they would pick…

Redraft: James Lutz - 942 TPE – DOWN 5 SPOTS

Could you imagine if Edmonton did not fumble on their two picks.  They would be sitting in an incredible position this season as an offensive juggernaut.  Edmonton would have an embarrassment of riches for an already talented roster.

20. pride San Francisco Pride (via Argonauts) - Ignacio Garza – 848 TPE – Right Wing

While Ignacio might not be the best first round pick, he has paced above average and positionally he is the third best right winger in the draft.  If he continues to apply to his craft he will become a top 6 winger on a very talented young Pride team.

Redraft: Ekaterina Valieva – 958 TPE – UP 9 SPOTS

If the Pride had the chance to do it over, this is who they grab at this spot.  Ekaterina has been the second best right wing by a good margin.  She is a work horse and a future star.  Ekaterina definitely should have been a first round pick and now she is recognized as one.

Round 2

21. Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs - Hai Nam Hoang – 913 TPE
22. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (via Steelhawks) - Nathan Maegher – 956 PTE
23. Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Adam Llebold – 969 TPE
24. Renegades Texas Renegades - Marton Diehm – 990 TPE
25. Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via Blizzard) - Bastien Primeau – 835 TPE
26. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Barracuda) - Philip Fry – 943 TPE
27. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Matiss Ozolinsh – 760 TPE
28. Stampede Buffalo Stampede - Jarrod Lakemore – 1002 TPE
29. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via syndicate) - Ekaterina Valieva – 958 TPE
30. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers - Cal Kono – INACTIVE
31. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Forge) - Redd Savage - INACTIVE
32. Renegades Texas Renegades (via pride) - Beath Nicol - INACTIVE
33. Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via Specters) - Loosh O’Sullivan – 400 TPE
34. pride San Francisco Pride (via Dragons) - Barefoot Sugars – 711 TPE
35. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Inferno) - Anthony Simmons - INACTIVE
36. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (via Stars) - Walter Sobchak – 685 TPE
37. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (via Patriotes) - Tummy Hurts – 805 TPE
38. Specters New Orleans Specters (via Aurora) - Edvin Kalberg - INACTIVE
39. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Rage) - Bandit Heeler - INACTIVE
40. Forge Philadelphia Forge (via Argonauts) - Cale Salad – 1049 TPE

Round 3

41. Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs - Jeff Newman – 790 TPE
42. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (via Steelhawks) - Jason Robinson - INACTIVE
43. Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Davos Otasrob - INACTIVE
44. Renegades Texas Renegades - Lazos Otasrob - INACTIVE
45. Rage Manhattan Rage (via Blizzard) - Andy Ceylon – 519 TPE
46. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Tony Hawkey - INACTIVE
47. Renegades Texas Renegades (via Wolfpack) - Andrei Nikitin - INACTIVE
48. Stampede Buffalo Stampede - Deemed Inappropriate - INACTIVE
49. Dragons Calgary Dragons (via syndicate) - Brent Turnerson – 545 TPE
50. Renegades Texas Renegades (via Panthers) - Sea Jebus – 540 TPE
51. Forge Philadelphia Forge – PASS
52. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (via pride) - PASS
53. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Specters) - Hingle McCringleberry - INACTIVE
54. Dragons Calgary Dragons - PASS
55. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Inferno) - Dr. Hugh Orson - INACTIVE
56. Stars Toronto North Stars - PASS
57. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (via Patriotes) - Joshua Weber - INACTIVE
58. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Aurora) - PASS
59. Rage Manhattan Rage - PASS
60. Argonauts Seattle Argonauts - Peter Potamus - INACTIVE

64. Renegades Texas Renegades - Sam Squanch - INACTIVE
66. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda – Sjøforsvaret – 220 TPE
72. pride San Francisco Pride – Toasty – 1006 TPE
90. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers - Derrick Prince – INACTIVE

Overall, I feel like this class has an amazing top 20 or so players that could make significant contributions to the SHL.  It also feels very top heavy as approximately half are inactive or going inactive.

Perhaps the biggest misses go to Edmonton and Atlanta using all their picks (2 first rounders for both teams) on inactive players.

The biggest winner on this draft night likely goes to Buffalo as they have 4 very active members all at or nearing 1000 TPE.

Oats stole the words from me! Really happy with these draft results. Diehm and Valentine are core pieces of this team and I can't imagine not having them around. They're also both incredibly talented on and off the "ice".
