3 BLIZZSTARS OF THE WEEK

S71 - Week 2

A bit of a hiccup in terms of performance for the Edmonton Blizzard in week 2 of the regular season (S71), but still a good week overall. The Blizzard went 11-6-1 in 18 games compared to 14-4-1 in week 1. The slight speed bump has knocked the team down one place into 3rd behind only Winnipeg and Montreal, however it is good to see 3 Canadian teams atop the standings. The roster is still red hot as there are Blizzard players sprinkled all throughout the leaderboards, and the team is looking to bounce back in week 3 to stay in contention for the top spot. Your first Blizzstar of the week is Oles Kobliska, and what a week it has been for the former Yukon Malamute great (no bias)! Oles lead by example this week by leading the team in Goals, Assists, Points, Shots on Goal, and Hits. With such a huge performance, Oles now sits 2nd in team scoring with 61 points just behind Evan Winter’s 70 points. He seems to have hit his stride in his 3rd SHL campaign and is on track to have a career year, on track to SMASH his previous bests. Here’s a little progress tracker:

The second Blizzstar of the week goes to Luca Hunziker! It’s tough to carve out a living as a D in the SHL, you’re either getting forward numbers but a liability or a stay at home D that won’t get much attention. Luca has walked that fine line in week 2 by being defensively sound and also going on an 8 game point streak! Consistency is the name of the game and Hunziker’s persistent production has surely helped the team in the hunt for the top spot on the table. Another fun fact, Luca currently (as of the start of Week 3)leads the team AND the league in Penalty Minutes with 44. Luca, like Oles, is also on track to set a new career high in S71 since setting the benchmark with Toronto in S68. All eyes will be on Luca in week 3 to see if he can continue his production (no pressure <3).

Conner Snooks

The 3rd Blizzstar of the week is Conner Snooks! Coming into season 71 on his 12th season, (some say he’s as old as the British crown) Snookie is one of the veterans that the rest of the Blizzard look up to. He knows what it takes to win and brings his championship pedigree to the team from Philidelphia’s S69 (nice) Challenge Cup victory. Although he is coming out of his prime, he is still producing impressive numbers as a veteran. Snooks is over a point-per-game so far in S71 and has kept this pace ever since joining the Blizzard with 139 points in 103 games played. As for production, you can still count on Conner Snooks to put the puck in the net, he has consistently put up 30+ goal campaigns in each of his last 5 seasons, and is currently on track for 34 goals this season.

Honorable mention goes out to Ben this week! He put up great numbers this week and is currently 3rd on the team in points. This Mudkip has really come into his own last season and continues to impress so far in season 71, his underlying numbers and defensive play looks much better than last season, we look forward to see what he does for the rest of the season, a career year could be in the making!
