Vancouver has to be one of the highly-touted contenders heading into S73 of the SMJHL. They have seven players who are in their final season of eligibility and have all reached the 425-TPE cap for the juniors, including their starting goalie and an entire lineup of skaters capable of making opponents suffer. Scary Jerry enters his fourth season in the league, and third with the Whalers, and seems to have taken a significant step forward. In nine appearances thus far, Jerry has two shutouts and has saved 92% of the shots he has faced. Meanwhile, Vancouver winger Inactive Forever has already started building off of his 93-point campaign from a season ago by dominating all statistical categories for the team, with twelve goals and twelve assists in just eighteen games up to this point. Lastly, we look to the starting D-pairing with Bob Wehadababyitsaboy, who is playing the most minutes of any Whaler and contributing to both powerplay and penalty kill scenarios. Wehadababyitsaboy has a unbelievable twenty takeaways and zero giveaways, demonstrating his ability to maintain possession for his team.
Denebor Milasch finally got clearance to move to the United States and join an SMJHL team shortly after the pre-season ended. While having some time to adjust to the speed and SMJHL rink size would have been beneficial, Denebor plans to be ready to join a team and contribute right away. Coming from Poland, he is used to moving and adjusting quickly to new environments to play hockey. He has played in several different leagues and countries across Europe growing up and is hoping to finally get his first taste of true professional hockey in the SMJHL. As the pre-season has wrapped up it has become obvious that several SMJHL teams are in need of a goaltender and Denebor hopes to find a home before the start of the regular season. While Denebor may not be as prepared as other goaltenders, he is okay with taking a season to backup and learn the SMJHL game if that is what it takes.
Ivanov and the Battleborn are off to a blazing start! Thomas Sawschuk is leading not only the team in points, but also the entire league with 30. Sawschuk is also leading the league in assists with 20. Acting as the main distributor for the team, all of the Battleborn faithful should hope that Sawschuk continues dishing out dimes. Another crucial player plays just to the right of Sawchuck, Brock Samson. Samson brings a tremendous two way presence to Nevada, being ranked 2nd in points and third in hits. This is looking to be a truly breakout season for Samson, with him being on pace for 115.5 points this season, absolutely shattering his previous record of 57 points last season. It's important to remember that offense is only one half of the game though, and that's where I-Stir MyPudding comes in. Pudding leads defensemen in points with 17, with 9 of them coming during power plays. Nevada needs these 3 players to continue to perform at an amazing level in order for them to have a chance at winning it all.
Québec City Citadelles entered this season with the sole purpose of rebuilding their team. And if we look at their roster after the drafts were done, one can say it promises to be a successful one. With many players joining the team who could be key to this rebuild. Céleste Desjardins is one of the very promising forwards who could become a very important scorer for the team. Then there are the Solberg sisters, Sonja and Froya Solberg whom are offensively quite talented and are working off each other. Other than those three, Shawn Pawn also promises to be a great addition to the team with a lot of potential to be unlocked. Of course a team can not function only on offence and as such needs good defenders as well. Luckily for Québec, they managed to draft two players who are already mentioned by many as the "Latvian Duo", Juan Tymer and his partner in crime Leo Roze. With those two at the helm Québec could see it's defence secured for the foreseeable future. The only main concern Québec needs to face from here on out is to reinforce their team with a goaltender.
As such the key attributes to Québec's succes are none other than seeing Céleste, Sonja, Froya and Shawn develop offensively with Juan and Leo developping defensively and lastly they will need to secure a goaltender. If those things can be archived than Québec is in for a very successful period.
So the Anchorage Armada are looking extremely good to start the season. we did so many good things in pre season, and even to start the season off we have done great things. Obviously the goal is to win it all and i honestly think we can get there. we have a great group of guys here in anchorage and i feel like there nothing we cant do!
I think that some of the key players are going to be Deep thought as he just brings so much intensity every night and does what needs to be done, hes always looking for that open pass to get us a goal and his stats show it, but dont be fooled he can still score too. another key player is rookie lucki blackwood, hes having an amazing start to his rookie year and similar to deep thought he does everything right on the ice, hes someone that will bury the puck at any given moment. last key player is Goalie stun gun, so far hes got 2 shutouts this season and is capable of getting so much more this season, it feels like when hes in net we can win any night, hes such a good presence to have in the crease! As always, I know literally nothing about hockey so identifying who is going to be important for this upcoming season for the Syndicate is very difficult. We roster a ton of Centers by the looks of it - Heinrich, Soderberg, Jones, and McZehrl Jr. I don't know if that is normal, but it looks like they're most of our highest points scorers/getters, so I imagine that is quite important. Jones leads the team in assists which feels like an important stat. Soderbeg leads the team in winning faceoffs with 178, over 40 more than the closest next player (Heinrich) who only has 131. The highest game rating on offense belongs to Majestik-Moose, a stat I'm sure is kinda like rating stats in other sports so I imagine thats a good thing. It feels like our defensive ratings are a bit lower, and I'm unsure why. Jammin leads the team at 84, so I imagine he's the lynchpin of our defense this season.
This season should hopefully be a hig step forward for Great Falls who found themselves near the bottom of the standings last season. With a lot of growth and a fantastic draft class, this could be a season to make a post season rush.
John Peanut will be a key component to the ongoing success of the team. Their role in shutting down the other team as a Rookie defenseman will be challenging but the 1st overall pick knows how to play their game.
Beau Kavanagh comes in as the starting netminder for the Grizzlies. Now with a much better defense in front of them as well as a fantastic off season training regimen, we should see Beau taking the league by storm and hopefully earning themselves some award nominations.
Rookie phenom Gordon William Gibbles lit up the preseason and international scene during the offseason and many have them pegged as a Rookie of the year candidate. The offensive minded goal scoring machine from Minnesota should be a key component to earning a solid seed in the playoffs.
So far Anchorage is looking good coming into the new season. Off to a 13-5-0 start, they are leading their conference which is always a good thing to see. They currently have 2 shutouts, both of which are provided by the wonderful as always Stun Gun who really came out of the gate strong this season upon being drafted to Anchorage in the SMJHL draft. Deep Thought is another player who came out of the gate running this season amassing quite the stat load for someone his age. Finally Lucki Blackwood is another player on the team with a strong start to the season, coming into the end of week 1 with an impressive 20 points with 8 goals and 12 assists, one of the highest on the team and one of the highest in the league. With these three players, even this early on I see no reason why Anchorage won't make the playoffs. Each of these players will be extremely critical when it comes down to the final stretch of the season. Their stats are showing they can handle the pressure, but they need to keep that up to handle the pressure closer to playoffs.
