(GRADED)Deep Dive 2: Montreal Patriotes the forgettable season
#1
(This post was last modified: 10-22-2023, 10:20 AM by CptSquall. Edited 1 time in total.)

As of this time, the Montreal Patriotes are sitting with 8 points, 3 wins, 2 overtime losses, and a whopping 30 regular old L's. The win percentage is 11.4. They have a goal differential of over 100 (179 against, 62 goals for). So the question becomes, why? Why are they so bad this season?
In comparison to the last place team, the first place team, the New England Wolfpack, currently have almost exact opposite. With 31 wins, 3 losses, and 1 OT loss, they sit at 63 points. They currently have a 90% win rate. They have 200 goals for, and only 81 goals against. So how are they so good?

It comes down to the players on your team. Looking at them side by side, based only on TPE, the Montreal Patriotes highest TPE player sits at 1407. That would be a 9th place player if they were on New England. The best player on Montreal wouldn't make top 6 on the top team in the league. It is possible that New England is stacked, so I pulled a team that is more middle of the pack to try to do a fair comparison. The current 10th place team, the Los Angeles Panthers, currently have a player about to break the 2k club, at 1946. If you were to insert the top player on Montreal into Los Angles, they would be ranked 7th on the team! 7th! So how did the Montreal Patriotes get so.... minor league-y?

According to the S73 draft, Montreal had 2 picks taken total. They picked Jussi Mutou (ThisSeemsFishy) and Valerija Serapin (Will3) they are both not on the team at this time, sitting in the Jr league. Jussi Mutou has 349 TPE, which would put the rookie drafted last year ahead of the current 3rd line Left wing at 318 TPE. Valerija Serapin is currently sitting at 329 TPE, and would not be an improvement TPE wise to the main club. Both players are currently playing for Colorado.

So lets go a draft year back, into the S72 draft. They had no picks.

So back to the S71 draft... They had no picks.

okay, back to the S70 draft.... no selections...

What is going on here? Why do they not have any picks? Well from what I can tell, they traded them all.

And now Montreal has stockpiled a ton of draft picks. It is safe to say that the next draft will basically be "who doesn't go to Montreal" because they have at least 3 first round picks.

I've lost focus, as the future is blindly bright for the Montreal Patriotes, the current team is surely stuck at the bottom. Clearly in the process of a major rebuild, it appears that Montreal gambled it all on a run. Which begs the question, was it worth it? Have they won a playoff series, or a cup for the team to bear this pain?

The answer appears to be no. Montreal has not won a cup. Coming into the league at Season 60, they have not won it all yet. They were swept in the first round of Season 64, for the first playoff birth. Montreal got the first playoff win in Season 66, but still had a first round exit. They made it all the way to round 3 in season 67, the best run to date.

In conclusion, this appears to be the first fire sale in the teams history. With good drafting, some great luck, and maybe a few more draft picks, I predict Montreal will win their first cup by S78. I also predict this season to be a forgettable one.

i think Montreal rightly recognized that they were leaving the playoff window and rather then hang on for 1 more chance at a cup run they sold off their past 2 players to move into full on rebuild and give them a chance of winning the cup somewhere else. It will be a painful few seasons but once they are through it they will be high flying. its so weird for them to take the step back and rebuild as they were amongst the top teams last season.
