SHL75: #26: Ludwig Koch Schroder

Ludwig Koch Schroder
@Rabidsponge21

One of the most consistent defenders during the end of the STHS era. Ludwig Koch Schroder is one of the best defencemen in the later half of when we used the STHS engine. A staple on the West Kendall Platoon defense, Schroder had a long and fruitful career spanning 21 seasons.  Drafted 10th OA by the Hamilton Steelhawks in the S31 draft class, Ludwig wasted no time in going up to the SHL.
First started playing in the SHL in S32, Ludwig had a decent start to his career. Starting on the 2nd line, Ludwig had 6 goals, 21 assists for 27 points. Along with 69 shots blocked. S33 saw his minutes decrease a little, but he was more productive. Scoring 12 goals, 17 assists for 29 points. This time with 91 shots blocked.

S34 was an even more important season for Ludwig. Getting the most minutes of his career, around 28 minutes a night. He started to break out, scoring 12 goals, 26 assists for 38 points. Not to mention 101 shots blocked too. Things in Hamilton are starting to look up for Ludwig. More ice time, getting more points. Yet, things in Hamilton came to an end this offseason. As things started to unravel in Hamilton, LKS did not want to stay a part of the rebuild in Hamilton and requested a trade. Buffalo took that opportunity to trade for LKS. sacrificing 2ndOA of the S25 draft, S36 1st and a 3rd in order to get him. The GM said this when they acquired LKS
“We are pleased to announce this trade which will have a huge impact for the future of our franchise. It always hurts when you have to part ways with 2 first round picks but getting a young marquee player back in Ludwig Koch Schoder is something that we are very excited about here in the Stampede management.”

S35 saw a reduction in ice time for LKS, which also led to less opportunity for LKS to get points. Only getting 6 goals, 27 assists for 33 points, in addition to 71 shots blocked.

S36 saw LKS’s first big season in the league. First game being over a PPG. Scoring 16 goals, 36 assists for 52 points. LKS won the Aidan Richan for most improved. Got 1st All Star Team as well as getting nominated for his first Scott Stevens Award for best defenseman.

In the S36 offseason however, LKS was not vibing with the Buffalo Locker Room. Leading Buffalo trading LKS’s rights to West Kendall Platoon in exchange for TEX S37 1st round pick. With the GM WannabeFinn stating
“This trade sucks to make, especially as a new GM. Rabidsponge has a phenomenal player and is a great locker room presence, but he just wasn't feeling the fit here in Buffalo. I wish the best of luck to you and to West Kendall, maybe you can be that piece that pushes the Platoon into the CGY/NEW stratosphere.”
Off LKS went to West Kendall, where he found a home until retirement.
S37 & S388 saw LKS get 36 & 35 points respectively. With 73 & 82 shots blocked. Still a great defenseman in his own right, but not reading back to the level he was in S36.
S39 was his 2nd and final time he hit 50+ points in his career, leading all defenseman in points. Scoring 17 goals and 33 assists for 50 points exactly. 96 hits and 78 shots blocked too. All of that earned him 1st All Star Team, and his 2nd Scott Stevens nomination.
S40-S45 saw a consistency in LKS. Always getting 30+ points during that 6 season stretch. Always getting 70+ shots blocked (except for 1 season). Always a positive +/-. He was a consistent #1 defenseman for the West Kendall platoon as they won 2 Challenge Cups during that stretch. S45 is also where LKS got nominated for the Antonz Razov Award for playoff MVP. For scoring 24 points in that playoffs.

S46 was the final big season for LKS. This season also saw the introduction to a new award for defenseman. The Bojo Biscuit award for best defensive defenseman. During this season, LKS scored 17 goals(tieing a previous career high), 31 assists for 48 points. Along with 112 hits and 80 shots blocked. For all of that, LKS got the 1st All Star Team, along with his first Scott Stevens Win. He was also a Bojo Biscuit Nomination as well.
S47 saw LKS won his 3rd and final Challenge Cup with the Weste Kendall Platoon. Scoring 11 goals, 28 for 39 assists that season. He also had 120 hits and 102 shots blocked too.
S49 saw the first time LKS went under 30 points since S33, where he scored 6 goals, 20 assists for only 26 points.
That proved to be a fluke, as S49 and S50 saw him reach 40+ points again. With S49 getting the stateline of 7 goals, 36 assists for 43 points. And then S50 getting 3 goals, 40 assists for 43 points. Both seasons earned him x2 3rd All Star Teams.

S51 & S52 however, were his final 2 seasons in the league. Only scored 19 points in S51, and 24 points in S52. With a reduction to the 3rd line, and FHM approaching in S53. LKS called it a career.

1050 GP, 178 goals, 564 assists, 741 points. 1379 hits, 1648 shots blocked. When retired, he is 3rd most points by a defenseman. A fact that stands to this day, still 3rd most points by a defenseman. That in itself is legendary. A defenseman who is one of the best defenseman for most of the S30’s and S40’s. x2 Scott Stevens Nominee, and x1 Scott Stevens Winner.

Wicked.

Honestly looking back I wish I could have not done the trade requests like I did. Regrets.

I loved my time im WKP but really want to remove those blemish if I could.

Can't believe I almost cracked top 25!

Great series of articles Luke.
