Deep Dive #1 - Season 78 Anchorage Armada Season Outlook
#1

The left winger Hughes Incorporated, my player, was drafted in the 3rd round of the S78 SMJHL Draft and so naturally I wanted to take a look at the season outlook for this team heading into Season 78.

Prior Season (Season 77)

First, I want to give a brief overview of what happened the prior season to give us a proper context for what is to happen this upcoming season. In Season 77, the Armada encountered a bit of a lull after achieving 6 straight seasons of 60 or more points in each season. The Armada finished 14th in the SMJHL with a total of 47 points and a total win, loss, and overtime loss of 22, 41, and 3 each. However, this would give them a good foothold on the draft lottery and they would make good use of it, landing the 3rd overall draft of the S78 SMJHL Draft. They finished with the least goals scored and the 3rd most goals allowed in the entire SMJHL leading to the 3rd worst goal differential.
Draft Results (Season 78 SMJHL Draft)

The Armada came into this draft needing to fill in some holes and they did so quite nicely. With the 3rd overall, pick, they shored up the defense by drafting Javelin Bodine, with the 14th overall pick they continued to shore up the defense by drafting Dieter Fruhstuck, with the 19th overall pick they went back into defense again by going for Barcus Juneau and then even more defense with the 23rd overall pick with Abbe Wass. Deven Rappleyea was yet another defensive pick (so much defensive picks) with the 35th overall pick before finally going with offense with myself, Hughes Incorporated, with the 36th overall pick. They then made no more picks as they passed on the rest of their picks. So they made sure to shore up the defense of the future while still making sure the offense had some production joining them this season.

Approximate TPE by Line for Offense, Defense, and Goalie

I am not privy to how the lines are going to go for the Armada but this is my guess based on TPE totals entering the upcoming season for the offense, defense, and goalies. (I also didn’t really differentiate between LW, C, and RW and LD and RD just to make it easier to analyze each part of the hockey team.)

Offense
Odelein IV (692) – Steelflex (573) – Beneski (387)
McZehrl III (364) – Corrigan (319) – Guiseppe (308)
Fancyson (281) – Smex (278) – Incorporated (232)

The offense isn’t half bad especially in the front line with Odelein IV and Steelflex heading the core at max capacity. The middle of the offense is pretty decent kinda in the middle and the back half could use some work but is still fairly young and active ready to improve over time, and this reflects in its initial offense TPE comparison amongst SMJHL where they are 7th in average TPE among forwards.

Defense
Chunky (635) – Fruhstuck (230)
Juneau (229) – Bodine (229)
Wass (225) – Rappleyea (198)

This is the area the team invested most of its draft capital this past draft and boy have they needed to. They have filled the defense with nice active young players that while it won’t look amazing now (currently 16th overall in average defense TPE), over time the corps will continue to improve and raise itself to the middle of the pack.

Goalies
Joy (367)
Zamboni (348)

This is probably one of the bigger strengths of the team with 2 pretty high TPE goalies which make them the 2nd highest average goalie TPE in all the SMJHL. They should help give the defense some breathing room as they figure out how to adjust in the SMJHL.

Team Outlook

Ultimately, I would say this team will finish in the middle of the pack this season, around 8th or 9th place. It won’t be an amazing team but it won’t be a terrible team either, and I think it can cause some upsets in the playoffs if the sim goes right for them. (The average TPE for this team seems to confirm this finding as they are currently 11th in average team TPE but of course that can rise with contributions in updates throughout the season)
