This is it. The final day of the SMJHL regular season is upon us. It has been a season full of ups and downs, wars and battles, and celebrations amongst teammates. The end goal is on the horizon, and playoff hockey is within our reach. With the ultimate trophy at the end of the tunnel, today we visit the top teams of the league and bring you the scoops of the season as our aspiring champions trudge closer to glory.
Rounding out the top of the list, we start with the Maine Timber. Their dominance this season started early, and never stopped. Boasting an impressive 50-11-4 record with one game remaining in the season, this team tops the list for favorites for the cup. The team features a cast of star level players at all positions. Doug Weight's impressive scoring campaign, partnered with Kris' strong goaltending has kept them at the front of the pack for the entirety of the season. The team also features 4 other skaters with 90 points or more, making this a powerhouse of an offensive threat. These guys WILL score on you, and their stellar blue line will strangle you. If you manage to put a puck past Kris, keep it. It doesn't happen often. The Timber have also only lost 2 games at home this year. Will the Timber keep their game together as we shift into the playoffs? All I know is that I don't want to be the team playing in their barn in Round 1. After Maine, the list of cup hopefuls opens up some more. The Timber have a 22 point gap between themselves and the second place team in the league, the Colorado Raptors. Only 8 points separate the 2nd place Raptors and the 8th place Kelowna Knights. Between them sits the Nevada Battleborn, the Anchorage Armada, the St. Louis Scarecrows, the Detroit Falcons, and the Yukon Malamutes respectively. These 7 teams are all controlling their own playoff destiny. The last games that they play today will determine round 1 seeding in the playoffs, so every minute matters. One single loss can change the standings instantly, changing the makeup of the playoff bracket. With such impactful games coming, it becomes extremely important for these teams to lock in their game plan and execute it efficiently. Any mistakes can and will change their season trajectory, so it becomes essential for them to play their game. With the impending threat of the supercharged Maine Timber looming overhead, teams' top players must consistently contribute and find a way to beat the cup favorite. Teams are going to have to find their groove and execute, as there will be no room for mistakes in the first round, for whoever matches up against this year's Timber. We have an exciting post-season lined up for us, and only time will answer the questions that we all have. Will the Timber continue their impressive campaign and take it all the way? Who will be the team to upset the cup favorite? Who will be the standout star in the playoffs? Who will lift the cup and etch their name in the history of the SMJHL? Tune in and find out! credit: @Aurora
