So far in the S80 season Carolina has shown itself to be a strong contender. Currently sitting in 3rd overall in the league with 30 points, 5 points behind the #1 team, but with a game in hand, things are looking pretty good. Let's talk about who are some key players which will make the difference for Carolina this season.

Greyson Willis - This sophomore player enjoyed a very strong showing in S79 going almost point per game in their rookie season. So far this season they have scored 29 points (17G, 12A) as they look to chase the top goal scorer award. Winning is all about scoring one more goal than your opponents and Willis so far has proven he can be that difference maker.

Hetaksh - This S80 rookie has been making a name for themselves in the league so far. With 19 points in 21 games they have known a very strong start to their SHJML career. Considering their true rookie status Hetakst is a very exciting and promising future ahead of them.

Radley Yates - Another S80 rookie who has been enjoying a very strong start to their career. This defender is amongst the top point scorers in Carolina with 17 points with 14 assists. Being able to contribute from the blue line is a very valueable assest and Yates can provide a lot of offense to this team.

The Vancouver whalers have seen a marked improvement over last year, already having 3/4 of their points from last year in 22 games

Hans Gronlund is definitely the leading player in points while also tied for most penalty minutes , truly a player that will do what it takes to ensure our victory

Trent Mackenzie averaging over 38 shots against per game and maintaining a .920 save percentage is definitely the hero of this team keeping us in the games at all odds. He's had a definitive boost since last season and we are so excited for his future with the club
And one of our rookies! If you Aint First is definitely setting a pace for rookies in points while also laying out some major hits and keeping the puck hitting the net, his aggressive skating and agility allows him to make clear work through opponents and crisp passes are giving the whalers a definitive shot at a redemption season

While the Tidal still has work to do in terms of team building, and figuring out each others strengths. There seems to be some certainty going forward. After this years draft the team added some much needed depth and future stars for their roster. Let’s take a look at a few.

CAULIFLOWER PIZZA

Pizza comes in as a very late draft pick. And potentially the back up for the Tidal going forward. After much speculation on how that would end up it looks like pizza is comfortable in the role for the time being and hopes to develop their game for the big time in the SHL.

BALDUR-ULYSSE SODERBERG-TREMBLAY

AKA, BUST. Couldn’t be further from the truth. Bust looks to make his presence more known on this the ice as time goes on. While starting off a bit shaky BUST continues to put up stellar numbers for a rookie goalie in the SHL. If Pizza and BUST can cooperate and egos don’t collide this could be the best tandem ever seen in the SHL.

FELIX CARLSSON

Felix comes into the fold as the veteran on the team. This will be his final season this year and he’s currently putting on a show. Averaging more than a point per game, Carlsson gives the Tidal some much needed veteran experience where the players can thrive off of and learn how to maneuver around the ice and behind the scenes.

Since the beginning of the new season, the Vancouver Whalers have been doing fairly well compared to the previous season. Most of the team was replaced by fresh new blood with only a handful of the season 79 squad remaining. Now veterans, three of them are leading the charge for a team that is battling to stay away from the bottom end of the standings and they are the following;

Hans Gronlund
Left Defense - Second SMJHL Season
Season 79 Stats - 62 Games Played - 0 Goals - 11 Assists - 11 Points - +/- Minus 76 - 34 Penalty Minutes
Season 80 Stats as of 2024/12/11 - 22 Games Played - 7 Goals - 11 Assists - 18 Points - +/- Minus 4 - 27 Penalty Minutes

Aaron Nexus
Left Wing - Second SMJHL Season
Season 79 Stats - 66 Games Played - 34 Goals - 19 Assists - 53 points - +/- Minus 41 - 6o Penalty Minutes
Season 80 Stats as of 2024/12/11 - 22 Games Played- 7 Goals - 7 Assists - 14 Points - +/- Minus 12 - 14 Penalty Minutes

Jiels
Left Wing - Second SMJHL Season
Season 79 Stats - 62 Games Played - 11 Goals - 25 Assists - 36 points - +/- Minus 41 - 38 Penalty Minutes
Season 80 Stats as of 2024/12/11 - 22 Games Played - 4 Goals - 4 Assits - 8 Points - +/- Minus 3 - 10 Penalty Minutes

Respectively first, third and tenth in terms of points producers within the Van City Squad, these three men are leading the charge of a young and promising Whalers team that is fighting for brighter days. The potential for greatness in Vancouver in the seasons to come is mighty interesting and these three men are there to help the young squad to thrive.

The team this season looks to be a young one, with only a few key Maxed players in given roles. Ryan obviously serves as the backup to Grant Berd, with much of the team’s strength currently coming from its offense. The defense is likely what will be addressed in other moves, as they are either overagers on their way out of the game, younger players off the pace, or in a few instances, impact players. While this bodes well for development, results will have to come around through individual success, and with a 5-10-3 record at the first turn of the season, more support of the goaltending and offensive output will be needed before the Walleye can call themselves the class of the league. It’s clear where Ryan fits in this though, as goaltending will be the critical hinge-position on which the team will either sink or swim moving forward.

Coming into S80, the Ottawa Highlanders have a decent amount of turnover to compete with. Three of their top 7 scorers from S79 have moved on (two of their top five) including their first and second line centermen. The defense remains mostly intact and arguably gets better through the draft.Easton Schaffer and Spaceman Spiff, the team’s top two scorers in S79, will need to be at the top of their game to make up for the losses on offense. Hotdog Lunch and Ian Avery may need to take on bigger roles as well if the Highlanders hope to improve on the results of S79. Newcomers Optimus Autonomous and Soobin will need to hit the ground running as they will be thrown to the wolves immediately. This is especially true for Autonomous. They are going to be looked upon to fill Ottawa’s biggest need - first line center - playing with the team’s best players in Schaffer and Spiff. Time will tell whether or not everything clicks before the end of the season.

Vancouver's squad is already looking leagues ahead of where they were last year; while they're not exactly lighting the SMJHL on fire with their 7-12-3 record, that's still close to the total wins of the entire last season. There's a few players on this young squad that merit credit for this improvement. First and foremost is sophomore captain Trent Mackenzie who is guarding the goal with aplomb, including a league-leading 19.91 goals saved above average and 775 saves and a save% of 0.920 that ranks fourth. He is definitely keeping Vancouver in these games and keeping scores close, crucial for such a young and growing team. Speaking of youth, the Whalers picked up a great bunch of rookies in the past draft, two of which are River Yekaterina Volkova and Joe Primeau. They rank second and tied-fifth on the team in points with 15 and 13, Volkova as the sole rookie on the first line at center and Primeau as the second line left winger. With another year or two under their belt and with other noteworthy young faces like If you Aint First, the Whalers' core could really become something dangerous. For the upcoming season, they may not be setting records, but they've been a big part of why Vancouver is beating league expectations.

The Anchorage Armada is shaping up to have a great season. The general managers have put in a lot of work over the past two to three seasons to get the team in a position where it is ready to compete for the four star cup. All across the line up there are top quality players but to name a few specifically I would go with Barcus Juneau who is the powerplay quaterback and best defenseman on the Armada. He has been doubling his output season on season so I expect him to be challenging for the best smjhl defenseman this season. Elaina Beneski has been over a point per game the last two seasons and will be looking to crack the hundred point mark this season, if she can put it together then the Armada have every chance of blowing the opposition away. Finally PeanutButter Zamboni has been a rock between the pipes so far this season and will be looking to cement that place as the starter after three seasons being the back up.
