It may be extremely early to call the SMJHL Rookie of the Year race, However, i believe that the 18th overall pick is already putting up an extremely strong campaign just 12 games into the 66 game season. Corrigan has already showed out in multiple games this season, despite being on a team that started just 1-6-1. However after Day 3 of SMJHL sim, the Kelowna Knights have jumped to 4-7-1. The Knights absolutely dominated Day 3, outscoring opponents 26-10, with their only loss coming to the Malamutes, with a final score 4-3, after a Malamutes come back, entering the third with a score of 3-2.
A good chunk of the reason the Knights became so dominant over this 4 game stretch, after starting out very cold, being last in the league, is the aforementioned rookie, David Corrigan. #23 through these 4 dominant games has put up 3 goals, with 7 assists, including a 4 point game recorded against Detroit. This performance has shot him up not only to the top of Kelowna's point leaderboard, with 7 goals, 14 assists on 21 points on the season, trailed closely by the sophmore, Mel Goulla, who recorded just 35 points in their rookie campaign. This season Goulla is already at 20 points on 10 goals and 10 assists through the same 12 games as Corrigan. Corrigan has already shown he will make waves in the J's for the next four seasons in a short 12 games. Corrigan currently sits 3rd in points LEAGUE WIDE, only sitting behind two Armada players, fourth year winger Elaina Beneski at 28 points through her first 13 games, and another fourth year forward, this time a center, in Zeus Storm. These two are forwards on the first line of the current 1st place team in the SMJHL, and rightfully so, as theyve played great. HOWEVER, theyve combined on 12 goals this season, which yeah duh theyre line mates on a top line they SHOULD combine for alot of points. Heres the kicker, and my whole point leading up to this moment. Currently, your Rookie Points Leader, your 3rd place in both points and assists LEAGUE WIDE, currently resides on the THIRD LINE for the knights, #23 is combining with his fellow draftee, Khalifi, about just as often as FIRST LINE CENTER Mel Guolla. While Corrigans point totals are certainly helped by playing with the top line center from time to time, this only occurs on the powerplay, where Corrigan is the top PP RW. However, this makes the scope of his performance that much more insane, as his normal 5-5 line consists of the previously mentioned rookie Khalifi, a fourth year player in Scott justice, who the last two seasons averaged 36 points though 66 games, and his d pairing is two inactive players signed to fill roster spots Corrigan is certainly making alot more out of a relatively dire situation, while averaging 18 minutes a night for Kelowna, while Storm and Beneski are averaging 20 minutes a night, as well as being on a considerably more established team in the Armada, that fell to the eventual cup winner in last years playoff, The Quebec City Citadels, in the conference final. Future Rookie of the Year, David "The Scott" Corrigan is a huge pick up by Kelowna, Its rare any rookie shows up and shows out this quickly, especially a player that damn near every team passed on atleast once in the draft, but sometimes, you strike gold, other times, you find a David Corrigan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() SHL GM Professor of Baldeconomics
