Smith speaks to media after Knockout game
#1

Just coming off of practice the sports media surrounds Dave Smith like never before. Microphones, tape recorders from all the major sport networks are there to talk to him after Team Italy’s latest game against Germany in Lake Placid.

Hello members of the media what can I answer for you today?

First Question: It has been a long while since we have had the opportunity to speak with you… Tell us what it felt like scoring your first Olympic goal!

I apologize for the long term hiatus from the press the last few games were not so great so I wanted to come to the media when I was ready and not frustrated since I did not want to say anything I would regret. The first goal was an amazing feeling and I was glad to be able to do it before fellow prospect and countryman Brandon Donini. Especially since I have been on the third line while he has been getting top line minutes, I would have bet money that he would have scored before me… Even though he has more points than me! I guess I can always bug him about that later on in our careers.

Second Question: What on earth happened when you took that double minor?

Oh God, the double minor… the hell do I know. I must have been so annoyed that I was not able to contribute to my team and it was not looking pretty then. It was most definitely an ugly moment but I hope I my team mates still like me for that blunder I caused. It was a terrible incident feeling I caused my team a loss from that penalty and I hope that will be the last double minor I take in my career.

Third Question: For most of the Olympics the Italian squad has actually been quite surprising having a lot of very close games and then near the end a couple bad losses… are the Italians out of gas?

HELL NO! We had a couple bad games yes but that does not mean we are done. We are done when we get knocked out. No sooner…. than that! I hope we do not get knocked out but it may happen, that is the reality of knockout play hockey.

We had some extremely close games and then all of a sudden I just cannot explain what happened but it was like we were cursed… All of a sudden the hockey gods were not smiling on us and our play got very sloppy. We bounced back against the Danes which allowed us to move to the knockout stages of the Olympics.

Fourth Question: What is the weirdest thing you have seen since coming here to the United States to play in the Olympics?

The locals call it an inside-out spaghetti and meatball. I went to this Italian restaurant thinking maybe I get some food that would remind me of home and then I found this sucker. Like what do people do with their time here… maybe they need a real job or something because to dream up of this and some other weird stuff these crazy Americans have cooked up.

Fifth Question: There’s more than that?

I know people love bacon but when I saw someone order this sandwich down the street I did not know what to do with myself. It scared the crap out of me. I like bacon just like the next person but seriously… look at this thing.

You may as well give him a bacon salad with a bun on the side would have probably been easier to eat then.

Sixth Question: Germany has just knocked out the Italians from medal contention… how are the guys handling it?

For me it is disappointing since it would have been amazing to compete for a medal. But we were facing a great tough German team and it was a learning opportunity for the next Olympics. We still have a chance to finish somewhere in between 5th and 8th so who knows what will happen then. We will just need to see who our next and last opponent is for that game and do the best we can. At least we did not finish dead last… right? So I guess some optimism is in order.

Seventh Question: The draft lottery is tonight…. this is a step closer towards the NWJHL draft coming soon. What are your expectations of the draft and what round do you think you might go?

Lots of talented players in this draft but I could go anywhere in between the first and third rounds to be honest. As much as I can say I will be a guaranteed first round pick like my other draft class members do… we will only know the results on draft day and I will keep an open mind about where I land and which round I will be drafted. This is just step one to the big show… and no I don’t mean that big wrecking machine I have heard about who works for WWE.

Eighth Question: During these Olympics you have been Team Italy’s third line center when you are more of a natural winger. How has it been playing center during these Olympics and do you think that has potentially harmed your performance at these Olympics and potential draft stock?

Interesting question and yes it was a change playing center since I have not played it in quite some time so maybe it has… I honestly cannot tell you. Some games I have been a solid center and some games not so much. I am still a young forward that can bring a two-way style game for now while I develop the other tools needed to excel in the league. I honestly don’t believe my performance has hindered my draft stock so much. It all depends on what each club is looking for. And remember not every NWJHL prospect was selected to the draft… only a key handful if I am correct.

I do apologize for not being able to hear everyone’s question it is quite noisy in here so if you have a question for me… please speak up and let me hear you. Thank you very much.. I hope you all got what you are looking for.

PS - GO ITALY
