SHL HOUSES: Adam Johansson
Good afternoon folks and welcome back. Today we are in for our 3rd stop on the SHL Houses tour and today we are covering our third straight member of the New England Wolfpack. Don't worry hockey fans, in the next few days we will get coverage from around the league and more variability of players...But when 3 Boston boys came calling, we decided that a single plane ride would be better than traversing the globe. Keep an eye out for some new episodes in the next few days from Manhattan's own Jordan Nugent Hall and WKP's Jaska Tiilikainen. Now for today's visit: Adam Johansson was drafted this season by the New England Wolfpack. Being one of the top picks in the draft, it was beneficial to Johansson to do some contract negotiations right away and get some income flowing in order to get a place to live after years of being in and out of hotels. Johansson worked his way up from the NWJHL and lived the road life from game to game. Johansson soon found that settling down would benefit both his training regimen and overall quality of life. His hefty payday from his contract signing and media deals left Johansson with plenty of money to spend, but as a responsible young rookie, he started small. Johansson met us outside his place near the North End's famous statue of Paul Revere on Hanover Street. We walked down a few blocks and reached Johansson's building. On the way over Johansson explained that when he got here just a few weeks ago, it was a little crazy. "I wasn't ready to move in right away, but the realtors were very helpful. There was still a small bit of snow on the ground and I started to fear the winter was not going away anytime soon. Of course, I was wrong and the last few days have been nice and warm around here." Johansson lived up on the third floor. "Why the North End?" We asked. "Well, the food around here sure is great. I like to stop on my way back from the rink and pick up some grub, and the italian food around here is unlike any other place in the Boston area. When I've had a good hard skate at practice and I need to recharge with some with some carbs, there are tons of pizza and pastas that fill me up and make my taste buds happy. I'll take you down to Mike's later too...just wait." So like the last two houses we went to, we walked through the doorway into an open living room. However, Johansson's place was a slightly smaller than the last two SHL houses we've been to; it was a quaint and wonderfully put together sitting room with a hearth and standing lighting. "It came fully furnished just like this, so I didn't have to do much designing," Johansson said, "Which was really very nice, because I don't really have the eye for interior design. I'm a hockey player by trade." Although the kitchen was separate, Johansson had a long dining table set against the wall of his sitting room. There was not enough space for a full dining room in the apartment, so he said "that had to make due." The space was nice and there was surprisingly no television. For a young player, we expected a big flat screen television and a cable box that had hundreds of channels. So we asked: "No TV A.J.?" "Don't really need it! I spend most of my days at the rink and like to get out and be active when I'm not on the ice. I run around the city when I feel idle. It helps me clear my head. Sometimes I run upwards of 20 miles a week." At that rate, don't be surprised if you see Johansson in the Boston Marathon in one of the next few seasons in New England. Anyways, back to the house... The kitchen was right off of the living room and it was a pretty tight squeeze. One counter ran all the way around the room with the appliances in between the marble counter-tops and the cabinetry. The appliances were somewhat older, but they seemed to be in working conditions and like Johansson said, the food around his place was too good to be eating in all the time. Going to the local italian places really filled the void. "I'll take you fellas down to the office. Or at least I call it the office. It's really just my reading room. I don't really have much work aside from paper work on contracts or filing my taxes every year. I do like to read something now and again though, so I've got a comfortable chair and a rocker if I'm feeling like sitting down with my book." The room was small; much like the rest of the house but it seemed like the perfect "reading room". Very little distractions, a small couch, rocking chair and table to work on. The two lamps to each side of the seating would be lit for reading and gave a bit of serenity to the room that wasn't felt anywhere else in the house. "Alright, last room and then I want to take you guys down the street again." A.J. said. We walked into his bedroom. The bed was raised very high and was covered with white sheets and a thick comforter. There was a computer monitor in the corner which was still dusty from having been in moving boxes in the recent move. The dresser and the mirror were perfectly organized and the room contained no closet. "I know it isn't like Nike or Ace's place with a big master bathroom or a walk-in closet," Johansson said, "But it's the perfect size for me. I just wish I had more space for my running shoes." In the corner, tons of shoes were strewn about. Most of which the bottoms were worn right down to the soles. You could tell A.J. liked to run by his lean figure, but his shoes told the story even better. "Alright let's go down to Mike's." Mike's Pastry is a North End classic. They have some of the best cannolis and italian pastries around. Johansson took us inside and order a little bit of everything. "You guys are gonna love these," he said. "Seriously, its the best cannoli I've ever eaten. I have to stop myself from going daily because my diet should be more strict." We thanked A.J. for his generosity and sat down just around the corner to devour what we'd just gotten. A.J. enjoyed these large donut looking dough balls that were covered with sprinkles. He wolfed down about 3 of the half a dozen and left the rest out for us if we wanted to have some. After about a half a dozen cannolis ourselves, we decided to leave them for leftovers. A.J. gladly ate them instead. "Just want to thank you guys for coming out" He said, "I've had a real good afternoon and its nice to show the fans that I'm just a regular guy out here. Maybe I'll do a signing down near Mike's entrance some day." What a fantastic day it truly was. Johansson lives a fantastically quaint early career in Boston's North End and it was great to take some time to see his neighborhood and home. We hope to be back again soon in the coming seasons. Look for Johansson to make a big impact in his first season after the draft. It will be something to watch the rookie grow!
