Falcon's Flyer #1

Can the Falcon’s take the cup this year? Next year? How have their rookies progressed so far? Have the SHL send downs been producing? We’ll answer all that and more in this weeks “Falcon’s Flyer”.

Stats So Far:
So far this season, Detroit has played a total of 9 regular season games. They have 11 points and are tied for first in the eastern division standings with the St. Louis Scarecrows, who have played 1 extra game. Also tied with St. Louis, Detroit stands at second place in the league, with the Vancouver Whalers at the top spot.

Detroit has a winning record of 5-3-1, the second highest GF/GA differential at +6 and the second highest winning percentage at .611 to Vancouver’s .778.

Regina:
After having trouble combating the Regina Force’s team, Detroit was finally able to beat them yesterday 4-1. Previously Detroit had lost 3 in a row against the Force, who are last place in the west and whose only 3 wins of their 3-5-1 record came from our boys in red. This last win, coming with such authority at a 3 goal differential represents a turning point for the Falcons vs. Force series. It shows Detroit’s progression as a team and how quickly they do so. The Force have a terrible .389 winning percentage, Detroit won’t let them beat them again.

Vancouver:
Their next match up comes from the Whaler’s mentioned above, an obvious winning franchise this season. Detroit’s success so far has shown to win by outshooting the opposing significantly and use this offensive pressure to rack up points in the goals column. They tear down any goalie’s save percentage and currently Vancouver’s Erik Lundqvist stands at .897. Usually Lundqvist is able to hold off any team’s pressure to get the win, but when these two face tonight, .897 could still lead to 5 goals for Detroit with their high number of shots. Last time these two met, Detroit won by just 1 goal (3-2) but out shot Vancouver 34-20. Early in the season they met again, the result was 5-4 in favour of Vancouver. Since their first game together, Detroit’s rookies have been training and progressed marginally well, look for their previous game (3-2) to be a closer view into what tonight’s game will look like. These two teams are expected to play for the cup this year, and rightfully so. Will this next game together shed any light onto how that series will look? I believe so.

The Draft:
Detroit’s rookies have stepped up thus far, there is no question about it. The Falcon’s GM Esa and Co-GM Mook drafted very well in the SMJHL entry draft. This season, they picked up Ray Pejonis (6th), Kaapo Kekkonen (7th), Brandon Girard (18th), Shayne Gow (19th), Elvis Libra (30th), Mattias Wahlstrom (31st), Lee Bowden (34th) and Cameron Bunz (42nd).

Ray Pejonis - Drafted to fill a LW spot on the second line, his strengths have become skating and scoring. He stands at 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points in 9 games.

Kaapo Kekkonen - Drafted to fill a C spot on the second line, his strengths are scoring, skating, puck handling and face-offs. KK stands with 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points in 9 games. With a 51% face-off rating and 11 hits.

Brandon Girard - Drafted to fill a RW spot on the second line, his strengths are passing, defense and skating. He leads the second line rookies with 7 points, 1 goal and 6 assists in 9 games played. Surprisingly with a 60% face-off rating.

Shayne Gow - Drafted to fill a spot in the second defensive pairing, his strengths include defense, scoring and skating as an offensive defenseman. He currently is 4th on the Falcon’s roster for points and 1st for all the rookies drafted with 10 points, 1 goal and 9 assists in 9 games.

Notable draft mentions include Elvis Libra (2 points), Mattias Wahlstrom (2 assists) and goalie Lee Bowden (.739).

The Veterans:
Coming back from last year we see captain Asbjorn Alexandersen, Bjorn Knutsen, Alex Mack, Big Manius and goalie Adam Demko.

Asbjorn Alexandersen - 3rd for team scoring with 10 points in 9 games, 6 goals and 4 assists.

Bjorn Knutsen - 2nd for team scoring and 4th in the league with 13 points, 5 goals and 8 assists.

Alex Mack - 1st for team scoring and 2nd for the league with 15 points in 9 games, 4 goals and 11 assists, averages a 2+ point night every game.

Big Manius - 5th for team scoring with 9 points, 4 goals and 5 assists.

Adam Demko - Faced 185 shots so far, allowing 23 goals for a .876 save percentage.

The Future:
There’s no doubt the SHL send downs have been greatly producing for the Falcon’s offensive efforts. This great mix of SMJHL veterans could very easily take the team to a cup this year. But, what about next year? Season 24 looks very promising for Detroit their first 4 draft picks have been producing well enough and working hard. The key to the organization’s success next year will ultimately depend on how they do in the upcoming draft. If they do as well as they did in the season 23 entry draft there should be no problems. Detroit’s 3rd (18th overall) and 4th (19th) picks have stepped up their game the most for the rookies, that kind of progression from 3rd and 4th round draft picks is why this franchise is and will continue to be a winning one.

This year we are confident in Alexandersen leading his team to the 4 Star Cup. The great balance on each line, the skill of the veterans and the production in the rookie department will equate to a winning team in the playoffs. Season 23 champs.

We hope this weeks Falcon’s Flyer has brought you up to date on all things red and white. Look for future copies every week discussing everything from news, stats, progression and interviews.
