Welcome to the 3rd installment of Everybody’s Russian. In this piece I will be showcasing one of the best Russian forwards in the system. This player is big in size and plays a big game. He is one of Russia’s top players and our 2nd alternate captain. He goes by the name of… Yuri Boyka.

Need to Know Yuri Boyka is a native of Moscow, Russia and stands at 6’5 weighing approximately 230 pounds of lean muscle. He is a large two way left winger who is the whole package. When I say whole package, I’m not talking about his kahunas, I mean that he’s got the 5 S’s built into his game that every manager loves. Boyka possess size, speed, scoring, strength and skill. Very rarely will a player of his caliber come along. He hits, he passes and he knows how to put the puck in the back of the net. He is just shy of becoming a 1000 TPEr, but you can’t expect Boyka to have a breakout season this time around. For Russia, Boyka is a vocal leader in the Locker Room. He is always giving praises and warm welcomes to new team members which is nice to see. Boyka has a very significant role in Russia, and I expect him to continue being the positive player he is for us moving forward. This is why Yuri Boyka is our 2nd alternate captain for Team Russia voted by the players. Player History Yuri Boyka entered the SMJHL draft in S19. S19 looks to be similar to what we recently saw with the “Super Draft†in S23 - A large player pool of active members. When I was researching Boyka’s history, it amazed me to find that Boyka was drafted 28th overall in the 5th round of the draft! Wait, what? Boyka who is a top tier player in the SHL today was a 5th round selection. Unreal. Anyways, I’m assuming his draft stock fell due to some inactivity. After a successful rookie season, Boyka was drafted by New England 33rd overall in the 3rd round of the SHL draft. Boyka proved to the SMJHL and SHL world that he should have been selected somewhere in the top 5 when he had a stellar S20 campaign registering 60 points with the Impact the following the season. Boyka won numerous SMJHL awards that season including the Roberto Martucci, Jared Handson, Ideen Fallah and the Elias Armia Tophies. Boyka’s tremendous sophomore season increased his value for New England who was looking to win right away. New England’s mentality and desire to win led to a trade before the young Russian forward had a chance to play in the SHL. Yuri Boyka along with two S21 2nd round picks were dealt to the Los Angeles Panthers in exchange for Brandon Donini. Since joining LA, the Panthers and Boyka have yet to win a Challenge Cup. However he has been apart of the group to win the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl and most recently the Presidents Trophy in S23. Player Build Yuri Boyka’s Updated player build Strengths: Scoring, Defense, Skating Weakness: Checking Points Available: 9 CK = Checking: 70 FG = Fighting: 25 DI = Discipline: 62 SK = Skating: 99 ST = Strength: 92 6/8 EN = Endurance: 95 DU = Durability: 50 PH = Puck Handling: 95 FO = Face Offs: 53 PA = Passing: 90 SC = Scoring: 99 DF = Defense: 99 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Boyka’s build is beastly. Look at that 99 scoring, skating and defense. My favorite part about Boyka’s build is his defense. He knows how to get to the open lanes, shoot the puck and play a full 200-foot game. Recently he was working on checking which will help Boyka become more of a complete player who can do it all in any situation. I know here in Russia we utilized his scoring and skating abilities especially on the power play and in any 4 on 4 situations. Judging by the looks of Yuri’s build, I assume he will continue to work on Strength to 95 and continue to get his checking up. He has also started to put TPE into face-offs for when his centreman is waived from the draw. As we look forward, Boyka will be entering his 3rd SHL season with this build. I am expecting big things for him this season with the Los Angeles Panthers and even bigger things in Russia next IHF tournament. Player Build – What Needs Improvement Yuri Boyka’s two way player build is nearly complete. All he has to do now is get his strength to 95 then he can start putting everything into checking and or face-offs if he is looking to be more versatile. I really don’t see any area of weakness in Boyka. He is the complete player. If his end goal is the be a “complete player†then all he needs to do is continue working hard to bump up his checking ability. SHL Statistics In Boyka’s rookie season with the LA Panthers, he managed to produce 36 points and was a +8. Not bad for a rookie, but this was expected of Boyka because he led the SMJHL the season before with 60 points. The next season, Boyka put up nearly the same numbers he has in his first season. He had 21 goals and 21 assist, but this time around he was only a +2 on the season. This past season in S23, Boyka was disappointed as he scored the same amount of points as he did in his rookie season with the Panthers. Looking forward to this season, Boyka is looking for a bounce back season. He may even be a great late round pick in SHL fantasy. He is definitely a sleeper pick, but is a high risk high reward type of player. I seriously believe that Boyka will have a breakout season this year for LA and I am hope he is as confident as I am in him. IHF Statistics This past IHF tournament, Boyka finished tied for 3rd in team scoring with Captain Banananov. He ended the Round Robin tournament with 11 points and surprisingly only 4 goals out of that 11. Next season, Russia has big plans for Boyka has we will most likely see his role increase even more then it already is. Boyka is one of Russia’s top players and will continue to be an All star for the Motherland for many seasons to come. His contribution and leadership to Russia is the main reason why Russia chose Yuri to be 1 of 2 alternate captains.
Yuri Boyka Highlights
Code: 1109 words
