DJ Stanley - LaFlem Scouting Profile #3

Summary: For how good of a player DJ Stanley has been so far in his young career, it's surprising that he wasn't selected in the S24 SMJHL Draft. It seems that this Philadelphia native took that personally, and he proved himself to be an effective offensive weapon for the Prince George Firebirds after they picked him up in the free agency. In the playoffs he turned his game up to a completely different level and recorded 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points total in 6 games. His performance was good enough to be the second in scoring for his team just behind Patrick Brumm who recorded 8 points and 25 penalty minutes in the same amount of games before being eliminated by the S24 Four Star Cup Champions, the Vancouver Whalers.

Strengths:

Face offs - DJ Stanley has chosen to focus heavily on winning face offs to this point in his career, which he managed to translate into a face off win percentage of 52.19% in his rookie season. He played big minutes for the Prince George Firebirds on both the penalty kill and power play, thanks to his offensive and defensive abilities. Expect him to win much more consistently on the draw next season if he continues to improve his strength.

Passing - DJ Stanley seems intent to be a pass first kind of player, feeding his teammates the puck in a crisp and efficent manner. While he's not that easy to predict, Stanley does seem to have a tendency to pass the puck and make plays in the offensive zone instead of opting to attempt to snipe on the rush. He's not afraid of shooting the puck, however, but if he can continue to improve this area of his game specifically he will surely become a much needed player to various SHL clubs.

Puck Handling - It's pretty clear this young prospect specializes in the technical arts of hockey in order to gain an advantage, and the fact that he knows how to dangle the puck out of harm's way at the best of times is proof of that statement. In all actuality he's not exactly a specialist in this area, but when combined with his above average skating ability and unpredictable tendency to both shoot or pass the puck has ended up serving him pretty well so far.

Weaknesses:

Endurance - Even though he's not exactly the pinnacle of laziness or lack of effort, his tendency to wear down the longer the game goes is no secret. It's hard for most SMJHL prospects to be expected to score consistently when placed with a large workload and heavy minutes, but Stanley still needs to improve his stamina if he ever hopes to be a top six winger in the SHL. If he ends up playing down another year in the SMJHL next year this problem will not be as pronounced, but it will still be an issue that requires some improvement.

Concentrating on One Area - While DJ Stanley doesn't exactly disappoint in any area too heavily, he should focus on making his strengths even better in order to round out his game a bit. If he could pass the puck with more frequency he may end up becoming one of the better playmakers in the minors next season. If he also improves his puck handling a bit more, he'll solidify himself as someone who can be relied on to produce offense in most cases.

Personality: DJ Stanley is known as an active and exited player by his teammates in the Prince George Firebirds locker room. He never misses a chance to get in on the action, whether it be talking about the draft or the daily buzz in the SHL. His ability to reach out and get his name out there is a good attitude to have if you want to become a personality in the big leagues. By all accounts he is also an easily approachable player, so he will likely end up becoming a leader to some of the rookies next season for his team.

Draft Projection: Early 3rd - Mid 3rd

Closing Statement: This dynamic offensive forward is going to have to hone some of his already strong abilities if he wants to become the complete package as far as producing consistently goes. He will also have to try to remain active and update periodically if he's going to become a big name in the SHL someday. It's also interesting how he seems to want to be able to play well for his team in both ends of the ice, despite lacking a lot of physicality or major size. It will be worth watching out for his name on draft day.
