Player Bio:

Hagan was born in Huntsville, Alabama. An unlikely place for hockey to be popular, Hagan got into the sport because of his brother, and going to the local college team's games. Hagan began playing travel hockey at an early age, and was quick to develop a hard, physical styled game. Hagan went on to play Midget AAA for Thunder Hockey until the age of 16, when he began playing junior hockey in the NAHL, for the Springfield Jr. Blues. Midway through his second season, he moved up to the Tri-City Storm of the USHL, where he has played since. Hagan is looking to move up from the USHL to a more prestigious junior league in the SMJHL, one that has produced basically all of the modern day SHL talent.

Hagan appears to want to develop into a physical forward who is not afraid to work hard in the corners and win battles. He believes that his hard-nosed, physical game will translate well to the SMJHL, and that he will have success in both denying opponent's opportunities with his hits, and generating scoring chances with his physical play in the offensive zone. He wants to be a team-oriented player as someone who will stand up for his teammates, and someone who will play tough, hard-nosed hockey. He knows that if he plays his physical game correctly, then he will be frustrating opponents, and generating a lot of offense for his team.

Expert Analysis:

Hagan is an extremely physical power forward, one of the few truly physical players in the upcoming SMJHL draft. This makes him a rarity, as his physical brand of play can lead to him generating scoring chances, especially on the forecheck. His strength allows him to win battles along the boards against opponents, which makes him a great asset on the forecheck, and on the penalty kill. While some might think that the physical brand of hockey is falling out of favor in the SHL of today in favor of speed, Hagan's physicality does not slow him down, as he has the skating ability to keep up with the play and be effective. Hagan is good enough to beat goaltenders cleanly, but with his physical play, you'll likely see him picking up rebounds and tipping goals in from screening the goalie.

There are two main downsides to Hagan. The first is his passing ability. It has its flaws, whether it is accuracy, or his tendency to make bad passes. While it is certainly something that is fixable, it will take some time for him to become just an average passer, so he is able to lessen turnovers in the neutral zone. The other downside is his age. Hagan is likely the oldest player in the draft class at 19, and will be nearly 20 at the time of the SHL draft after his junior season. This means, if he goes undrafted, teams will have an aging player on their hands. It also means that he may not develop as much as younger players that he will be playing alongside will. One caveat, however, is that he has quite a lot of experience at his age, and is unlikely to be fazed by big games.

Overall Grade: While there are some downsides to drafting Hagan, his style of play and skill cannot be ignored. Physical players are becoming more and more rare these days, and teams will need players like Hagan to win possession battles and take it to the opponent with hard body checks. A-
