First article, double points please.
The latest young star taking the hockey world by storm has had a long past, filled with blood, glory, and tribulations. The story of Ser Arthur Dayne is truly an incredible yet tragic one. Known arguably as the greatest swordsman in all of Westeros’s history, Arthur Dayne has also been recognized for his honor and valiance. Arthur Dayne hails from House Dayne of Starfall, most notable for their title of “Sword of the Morning.†This title comes with the sword Dawn, which has said to have been forged from a falling star, or a meteor, giving it its milky glow. Not just anyone is bestowed with the title of “Sword of the Morning.†Rather, it takes an exceptional warrior and swordsman to be worthy of the title and its complementary sword. Arthur Dayne was one of these exceptional men. At a young age, Dayne was appointed to the Kingsguard of Aerys II Targaryen, or the Mad King. Consequentially, he developed a strong loyalty to the Targaryens. Specifically, Dayne became close friends with Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Through thick and thin, Arthur and Rhaegar were nearly inseparable. Robert’s Rebellion spelled the end of the Targaryen reign over Westeros. Rhaegar had kidnapped (or eloped with) Lyanna Stark, the betrothed of Robert Baratheon. He hid her away in the Tower of Joy and commanded Arthur Dayne, along with Ser Gerald Hightower to guard the tower with his life. Rhaegar died at the Battle of the Trident at the hand of Robert’s warhammer. Shortly afterwards, King Aerys II was stabbed in the back by Jaime Lannister (a knight who was trained by Ser Arthur). As for Ser Arthur, he died at the Tower of Joy, fulfilling Rhaegar’s final wishes. Fighting a young Ned Stark, Arthur was cut down from behind by Howland Reed. Ned Stark, an honorable man, returned Dawn to Starfall where it currently remains as no one in House Dayne has been deemed worthy of the blade. Now, you may ask, if Ser Arthur Dayne died at the Tower of Joy, how in the hell is he now a hockey prospect? Well, the Game of Thrones world has shown people coming back to life, and so Ser Arthur decided to live a quiet life away from bloodshed and his past. He probably could have changed his name to make it less obvious that he is the Sword of the Morning, but that’s neither here nor there. With us today, we have young Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. Our interviewer caught up with him and had some interesting conversations. Question: What position do you play? Answer: I am a defensive defenseman. Throughout my life, I have defended people with my sword, anticipating my opponent’s every move. I believe these skills will transfer well to hockey, as anticipating plays is key to defending. Question: How do you envision yourself fitting in a locker room? What’s your personality like? Answer: I get along with almost anyone, as long as they can show respect and loyalty when the time calls for it. I’m a natural born leader. I led the Kingsguard when I was young. I trained Jaime Lannister to be one of the greatest swordsmen in Westeros. Don’t get me wrong, I like to have fun too. There is always time to joke around with the boys. If battle has taught me anything, it’s that camaraderie is the most important thing to winning. And that’s what I’m here to do. Win. Question: You’re from the United Kingdom, a country not known for its hockey. You’ll be up against Canadians, Americans, Swedes, and other reputable countries. How will you make a name for your nation? Answer: Great question. I’m very proud of my homeland and I dream of playing for the UK. I plan on representing my country at every opportunity I get. Yes, we aren’t a powerhouse like Canada, Sweden, or Russia. But we have a lot of heart and a lot of under the radar players who are very skilled. I think we can hang with the best, and we will do our best to prove it. Everyone loves an underdog. Obviously, I will have to earn my place on the team, and I will do my best to do so. Question: You obviously have a lot of experience on the battlefield with swordfighting. How much experience do you have skating and hockey? Answer: Well, Starfall doesn’t get much snow at all, even during our long winters. When I was young, skating never even occurred to me as a thing to do. But you’ll never believe how amazing the Red Keep in King’s Landing is. They have all sorts of shit there, soccer fields, tennis courts, even a damn golf course. Can’t imagine why nothing gets done there. Anyways, yeah they have an ice rink too. So I skated a bit in my free time, mostly just to work on my balance and agility to complement my footwork while fighting. But we’d get some sticks and pucks out there occasionally too. I was one of the fastest guys out there, though Jaime (Lannister) was a rocket. Rhaegar was absolute trash; he hated the ice, obviously. I remember a couple of times we’d get some dulled blades out there and duel. Nothing pissed Rhaegar off more than getting knocked on his ass by Jaime. Question: So why defense? Don’t you like scoring? Answer: I just really liked hitting people and taking pucks away from them. It would make them angry as hell, which was just so satisfying. Let me tell you, the scariest play in a hockey game is getting a puck that’s been dumped in, knowing you’re gonna get run into the boards by a forechecker. I was one of the few guys that had the guts to do that day in, day out. Anyways, I’m more comfortable letting the play come to me rather than charging at the opponent. Just makes sense for a former Kingsguard, eh? Question: What would you say your goals are for the SMJHL? Answer: Honestly, I want to get comfortable playing real organized hockey in a true system. I don’t expect myself to have top pairing minutes or be the number one guy in the league. I’m going to take it a day at a time, trying to get better each day. I also want to get to know the players in this league, and make myself known as a great locker room guy. There isn’t anything more important to winning games than great teamwork. Question: What kind of defenseman would you say you are? Answer: A true defensive shutdown guy. At least right now, you’re not going to see me quarterbacking a powerplay. Blocking shots, taking pucks away, and just being a nuisance on the ice. That’s my game. Question: What are your strengths that set you apart as a player coming into such a big draft class? Answer: I’m a strong checker and I pride myself on taking scoring chances away and closing down shooting lanes. I have an active stick and I play a full 60 minutes. I am not afraid to sacrifice my body to block shots. I’ll do whatever it takes to get the team the W. I also consider myself a strong skater with good agility, speed, and stamina. This is a strong draft class with a number of talented defensemen. I believe I can skate among them and since I’m more defensively-focused than many of them, I won’t be a liability on the ice. My most important quality, however, is my work rate. I work my ass off every day to get better and better, and I’m willing to put in the effort that it takes to make it as a good hockey player. Question: What are some of your weaknesses that teams should take into account? Answer: None, obviously. Just kidding. I’m no Brent Burns, you won’t be looking at me to score or create scoring plays. I’m a shutdown guy, and I think focusing my game on that has made me very effective in my role, rather than try to balance both sides of the ice. Question: Which player’s style would you say you most emulate? Answer: I try to mold my game based on a couple of very good defensemen. Though I’m not as offensively minded as him, I love watching PK Subban because he hits hard and skates like the wind. I think skating is an integral and overlooked part of playing defense. The other defenseman I am most like is Jaccob Slavin, the young underrated star in Carolina. He does an incredible job of positioning himself in a way that shooters can’t get any quality shots off. He also is really good at using his stick to break up plays, and it seems like he is the most successful defenseman in the league at breaking up odd-man rushes. He’s got a nice beard too, and he’s the nicest guy off the ice. Question: If there was one rule you could get rid of, what would it be? Answer: The obvious answer here is the trapezoid, but I think the trapezoid has its place in hockey, even if getting rid of it would make my job a lot easier. No, I think offside needs to be tinkered with. These offside challenges have been getting ridiculous. A quarter of an inch shouldn’t make a difference; it’s ruining the spirit of the rule. Get rid of the challenge altogether. And goaltender interference is a totally different story. Refs need to stay consistent across games when calling, or not calling, that. Question: Who do you think sits on the Iron Throne when it’s all said and done? Answer: My heart wants to say Jon Snow. I mean, he’s the kid I died for. I’d love to see him “win.†But I don’t see it. It’s got to be Dany. Which I wouldn’t mind, having the Targaryens back on top. No matter how it ends, it’s going to be bittersweet. So many people are going to die, the White Walkers are going to fuck everyone up, and there might not even be anything to rule. All I know is that I’m hype as fuck for CLEGANEBOWL. Question: What do you do for fun, other than hockey? Answer: I can’t stay away from the blade, so I do some fencing. It keeps the mind sharp. Other than that, I’m a big fan of music. I try to listen to new stuff as often as I can. My pre-game playlist is set in stone, though. I also love to bake. Set some cookies in the oven with a timer before the game, get home with everything smelling heavenly, and relax with some post-game cookies and milk. Nothing better. Question: Well, now you have to tell us. What’s that playlist? Answer: I can’t give too much away. It’s got some Kanye, Arctic Monkeys, Kendrick, Interpol, and Taylor Swift. Don’t judge me. That’s all the time we have for now. That was Arthur Dayne, defense prospect for the upcoming SMJHL Draft. Thanks a bunch to Dayne for his time. We’ll be taking some fan questions too, and Dayne will get to as many as he can. Word Count: 1864 ![]() Registered Posting Freak ![]() Registered S15, S16, S24, S34, S38 Challenge Cup Champion
