We’re more than halfway through the season here in the SMJHL, so it’s time to take a look into how the St. Louis Scarecrows have been performing so far. As of this morning, the Crows find themselves on the top of the standings with a record of 23-9-3 totaling up to 49 points through 35 games. Their lead on the field has been narrowing recently, which might be cause for concern for some, but the Scarecrows are remaining positive about their situation. This is what Louie Garrett, captain of the Scarecrows, had to say about their most recent results.

“Yeah, we’re definitely on a little bit of a cold streak right now. We lost a couple of games in the shootout and there were a couple of games in which we thought we were the better team in the matchup, we were just having trouble finishing the play. Our roster got even deeper recently with the addition of Langabeer, so it’s only a matter of time before we get things turned around. We definitely have the talent to remain on top of the standings, it’s just a matter of getting some puck luck every now and then. I don’t think that we really need to do anything drastic to get things turned around. We’re just going to go out there and give it everything we got every single day.”

As aforementioned, the field behind the Scarecrows is catching up in a very tight group. The Vancouver Whalers are having a major comeback season after their disappointing season last year as they currently sit in second place with 44 points. The Montreal Militia are looking good in third place with 42 points. All with 39 points, Detroit, Colorado, and Prince George take up the remaining playoff spots with Kelowna and Halifax sitting outside the playoffs with 31 and 21 points respectively. Now that you have an idea of what the league is looking like and where St. Louis fits in that picture, let’s take a look at how the individual Crows are doing so far this season.

Crossfit Jesus
G: 19 A: 18 P: 37, +/-: +17, PIMS: 0, Hits: 10, SB: 6

One of the league’s most prolific scorers came back to the Scarecrows with one goal in mind, to avenge the 4 Star Cup Finals loss to the Detroit Falcons. Crossfit Jesus hasn’t lost a step from last season and is putting up huge numbers from St. Louis’ top line. As one of the team’s assistant captains, he is doing everything in his power to push the Crows to the next level and so far, it has been working.

Matthew Auston
G: 12 A: 24 P: 36, +/-: +17, PIMS: 2, Hits: 17, SB: 4

Matthew Auston is quietly having a superb season. Auston is right on the heels of Crossfit Jesus in terms of points and has been a go-to set up man for the star winger. Matthew Auston has played a critical role in the success of the top line and will surely have a similar impact when he decides to make the jump up into the SHL.

John Langabeer
G: 1 A: 1 P: 2, +/-: -3, PIMS: 4, Hits: 2, SB: 0

John Langabeer is a recent addition to the Scarecrows lineup as he was acquired in a trade with the Kelowna Knights. So far, this season, he has been a very successful scorer overall, but he is still settling in with the Crows. Once we get all of the kinks in the lineup fixed, I am positive that Langabeer will have a lot of success here in the end of the SMJHL season. Tough to argue with the success that he has had in his career so far.

Cameron Dubois
G: 5 A: 18 P: 23, +/-: 5, PIMS: 10, Hits: 11, SB: 32

Cameron Dubois has definitely had quite a bit of success from the blue line this season. Definitely offensively minded, this defenseman hasn’t been afraid to jump up in the play and take care of things himself. That being said, his 32 shots blocked have been critical on the defensive side of things. His style of play is necessary to have long playoff runs as you have to be getting points from all of your guys.

Joonas Rasmussen
G: 4 A: 19 P: 23, +/-: -2, PIMS: 14, Hits: 37, SB: 4

Joonas Rasmussen has played a very important role this season in setting up the play for his fellow teammates. His 19 assists are second on the team, only behind Matthew Auston. He also hasn’t been afraid to throw his weight around as he has recorded 37, which isn’t necessarily a ton but more than your typical set up forward.

Fletcher Carric
G: 10 A: 12 P: 22, +/-: -1, PIMS: 29, Hits: 61, SB: 3

Fletcher Carric is another guy who is quietly having a good season. This guy can be slotted anywhere in the lineup and make a positive impact. He has been chipping in offensively, but his 61 hits have been very important to St. Louis’ performances so far. You need guys that can play with an imposing presence and Carric definitely lives up to that.

Chuck Goody Jr.
G: 3 A: 17 P: 20, +/-: -4, PIMS: 2, Hits: 10, SB: 32

Goody Jr is definitely a model offensive defenseman for any organization. He is a leader in the locker room and it was rewarded as he was named an assistant captain this season. While he isn’t necessarily putting up mind blowing numbers, his consistent production is again something that is necessary for extended playoff runs. His ability to step in front of a shot is also exceedingly impressive.

Louie Garrett
G: 12 A: 5 P: 17, +/-: -2, PIMS: 2, Hits: 29, SB: 3

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Louie Garrett, after a very impressive rookie season was named the captain of the St. Louis Scarecrows and showed a ton of promise for this season during the preseason. His sophomore outing, however, has not really lived up to the hype. Outside of a couple of hat tricks, Garrett has been unable to get any form of consistent scoring going this season. He recently worked with some coaches to refine certain aspects of his game and he is hoping that those tweaks will lead to decent scoring down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Brett Kennedy
G: 7 A: 10 P: 17, +/-: 14, PIMS: 48, Hits: 103, SB: 6

Who do you call when dirty work needs to be done? That’s right, you call Brett Kennedy of the St. Louis Scarecrows. Kennedy has been battling it out all season to lead the league in hits and his efforts are definitely showing as he currently has over 100 of them recorded. For a guy that is primarily laying a smackdown, his 17 points are a nice addition to the team scoring. A very versatile player who has proved that he isn’t afraid of anyone in this league.

Riley Jako
G: 9 A: 5 P: 14, +/-: 6, PIMS: 16, Hits: 21, SB: 4

Jako has taken a depth role this season and while he is still putting up some points, he will likely start to be pushed by rookies for a slot in the lineup. He is definitely a balanced player, but he could still be successful he if put in some more hours in the training room. This is definitely the type of player you want to be successful, but for whatever reason it just isn’t quite happening.

Roman Augustus
G: 3 A: 10 P: 13, +/-: 9, PIMS: 6, Hits: 15, SB: 26

The first rookie on the list so far. The towering defenseman is definitely having a nice outing his first season. He’s managed to put up some points and block some shots on the back end. He has also been a very nice addition to the locker room, being vocal and letting his opinions be known to the leadership and ownership of the team. He is also one of the hardest workers in the gym. I would look to this guy as a possible future leader within the organization.

Hermanis Villy
G: 2 A: 9 P: 11, +/-: -6, PIMS: 50, Hits: 96, SB: 32

Villy is another guy who is out on the ice to make his presence known. He’s currently giving chase to Brett Kennedy for being the hits leader on the team, but he’s just barely got him beat out on penalty minutes. Not sure if that’s really something to be striving for, but he’s the leader nonetheless. Plain and simple, Villy isn’t afraid to put his body on the line for the team. He’s just a fearless competitor.

Khet Chupp
G: 2 A: 9 P: 11, +/-: 7, PIMS: 45, Hits: 66, SB: 40

Khet Chupp is another guy in his sophomore season who you might have hoped to get a little bit more out of. The kid is a monster in the defensive end as he’s blocked 40 shots and he has managed to put up some points offensively, but he pretty much non-existent in the gym. He has gotten to this point in his career on his natural ability but hasn’t really put in the work to get better. He could have been a top end blue liner, but I don’t see his career going much beyond where it is now.

Seth Paige
G: 1 A: 9 P: 10, +/-: 11, PIMS: 24, Hits: 41, SB: 25

The second rookie on this list is also a defenseman. Seth Paige has been a great addition to the team, helping to bolster the St. Louis defense which definitely needed more depth than the offense. He has chipped in a couple of points here and there which you can’t complain about, but he has been very reliable defensively which is more than what you can hope for from a rookie defenseman. Nothing to complain about in his game and he is only going to get better going forward. Can’t wait to see what he can do.

Stefan Digrio
G: 3 A: 6 P: 9, +/-: 5, PIMS: 16, Hits: 30, SB: 2

Stefan Digrio is another depth forward who is going to get pushed for playing time down the stretch with the development of some rookies. He hasn’t necessarily played poorly, but he just isn’t doing what is necessary to be successful in this league. St. Louis has some rookie forwards who haven’t quite broken out yet, but when they do Digrio might find himself out of the lineup.

Tigole Bitties
G: 2 A: 7 P: 9, +/-: 4, PIMS: 28, Hits: 25, SB: 0

Tigole Bitties is a player that is only getting limited minutes right now, but he could be a future star for the Scarecrows. He is very active in the locker room and is putting in the work to be a better player. Even in his limited role he has been able to put up as many points as some of the veteran depth forwards. His ability is evident, he just needs to keep doing what he is doing and he will get his chances on this squad.

Teddy Cuddles
G: 1 A: 1 P: 2, +/-: -1, PIMS: 5, Hits: 3, SB: 0

Cuddles was a late addition to the St. Louis Scarecrows roster, but he is doing work to get better every day which is something that the management of the organization loves. He is absorbing things like a sponge and similarly to some of the other rookies, it will be only a matter of time before he gets his shot. Definitely a player that will be flying under the radar because of his late start to the season, but one that GM’s in the SHL shouldn’t necessarily overlook. He has potential for sure.

Finn Jakobsen
G: 0 A: 2 P: 2, +/-: -13, PIMS: 14, Hits: 24, SB: 3

We’re starting to get into some players that people may look at their stat lines and laugh. But that shouldn’t be the case for Finn Jakobsen. Yes, his rookie season probably hasn’t gone the way that he had hoped, but he is getting miniscule minutes when compared to some rookies on other teams in the league. This forward is putting in hard work and will get his shot next season probably. He just needs to keep on refining his game and he will be a steal for an SHL organization in the draft.

Joseph Lombardi
G: 1 A: 0 P: 1, +/-: -10, PIMS: 4, Hits: 6, SB: 1

Another rookie who just needs more minutes and time to develop his game. He has some interesting skills that he might want to work out with the coaches, but at the very least he has dedication to getting better. He is very active in the locker room and is always willing to take advice on how to better himself as a player in the SMJHL. He definitely has potential as a future contributor to the Scarecrows lineup.

Sinn Nolan
G: 0 A: 0 P: 0, +/-: 0, PIMS: 7, Hits: 11, SB: 0

This bruiser is brand new to the Scarecrows and hasn’t really had enough games to get great analysis on him, but if one thing is for sure, it’s that this kid doesn’t mess around and isn’t afraid to lay the smackdown on someone if necessary. He could look to be an eventual replacement as a Brett Kennedy type of player. He just needs to keep working on developing his game which will be critical for him with his late start to the season.

All-in-all, there are a lot of things that the Scarecrows should be happy about in this season so far but there are things that they need to work on as well. The general managers have set this team up to have a decent shot at making another run at the cup as well as preparing for the future without superstars like Crossfit Jesus and Matthew Auston. We’ll just have to see how things play out here in the closing stretch of the regular season, but the Crows are in a pretty good position right now to qualify for a post season appearance, but I know that they want to get one of those coveted first round byes.
