An inside look at draft day for double media week

Narrator – On Road to the Show we examine the life of SHL hopefuls. We link up with them so that we get a behind the scenes look at their training, their life, and their preparation as they work through the Juniors in an effort to try to get drafted and play in the most competitive league there is. While not all prospects will make the jump to the big leagues, we take a look at some of the players we think have a shot, starting before their Junior draft and following them until their SHL careers begin, or they ultimately fail.

*Shot Ominous Sounding Intro Plays*

Narrator – This year we will be following young winger Jeff Brogen from the small town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Jeff is one of many who are expected to be drafted into the SMJHL today.

*Open scene of camera walking into the door of a small rural home*

Cameraman – “Hello Ms. Brogen, we’re here for the series on Jeff”

*Camera pans up to an exceptionally friendly looking Mrs. Brogen*

Mrs. Brogen – “Oh hello! Yes, Jeff told us all about it. He should be in his room just go on up”

*Camera knocks on the door to Jeff’s room, and opens the door. Jeff is found in his bed, cuddling up to a stuffed dog, still clearly asleep*

Cameraman – “Um, good morning Jeff?”

Jeff - “What? Who are you? Why are you **#**#”

The camera turns off as Jeff launches into a profanity laced tirade about being woken up early. Scene changes to Jeff dressed up in a car heading to the draft

Jeff – “Honestly, I’m feeling pretty confident right now. I know what I’m able to do and I know that these teams see this. I’ve even got my lucky socks on to make sure I don’t go somewhere terrible”

Cameraman – “And where do you not want to go?”

Jeff – “You’re definitely not goading me into saying that one for TV” Jeff laughs.

Cameraman – “Where do you think you’re going to go Jeff?”

Jeff – “Well, a few mock drafts had me pegged to go super early. Based on that, I think that first round is pretty well a sure thing. I’m pretty confident that I’ll be off the board early”

The camera follows Jeff as he walks into the draft, passing by many nervous looking potential draftees. None of those nerves seem to be affecting Jeff who has a strut going as he greets people, clearly feeling as confident as he had said.

Jeff - “Now all we need to know is who is going to be the lucky team to take me”

Camera cuts to audio of the first overall pick being made while focused on Jeff for his reaction.

“With the first overall pick in the S42 SMJHL Entry Draft the Anchorage Armada are proud to select Jax Aittokallio!”
Jeff looks slightly dejected before turning to the camera “Well, I think we all knew that he was going to go first overall, clearly I’m next on the board”

“With the second pick in the S42 SMJHL Entry draft the Halifax Raiders are proud to select, Leshaun King!”
A montage of the picks being made as Jeff begins to look more and more dejected. As round 7 starts up, Jeff picks up his phone and dials his old manager at McDonald’s back in Antigonish. Based on what we can hear from the conversation, he quit in an exceptionally rude, mean, and profane way and is now begging for his job back. He seems to have worked some magic.

Jeff - “Thank you so much” he tries to shield himself from our camera

“With the 51st pick in the S42 SMJHL Entry Draft the Montreal Militia select Jeff Brogen”

A look of shock crosses the prospects face

Jeff - “Oh my god yes! Never mind Mr. Matthews, I stand by telling you to go take a long walk off a short dock, I’m drafted now!” He hangs up the phone before hugging his family and walking up to the stage, pulling on the Militia jersey and hat for the first time

Scene cuts to backstage with Jeff with a beer in his hand.

Cameraman “Uh, Jeff where’d you get that?”

Jeff turns with a smile on his face before quickly turning red and hiding the beer behind his back

Jeff - “Oh you mean the jersey? You saw it right? The GM totally has faith in me and while it is a lot later than I wanted to go, I’m happy to go to a franchise as well regarded as Montreal so that I can keep this going. I was confident the whole time that I was going to be getting picked up”

Cameraman – “Do you have any words for any of the GMs who repeatedly passed over you, thinking that 50 prospects were better than you?”

Jeff looks a little put out, the reminded of where he’s drafted clearly taking a toll on him

Jeff – “Yeah, they better watch out. I’m going to make each and every one of them regret passing over me for someone else”

Cameraman - “What about your own GM?”

Jeff – “Well, they ended up making the right decision in the end, so I can’t fault them too much for waiting on me. I guess I’ll just have to give them a big thank you and get ready to get to work so that I can start making them proud and bringing them championships.”

Narrator – “Next time on Road to the Show, we’ll follow Jeff as he arrives in Montreal and adjusts to big city life, meets his teammates and tries to survive training camp”
