It’s no surprise that Montreal drafting Nikolai Evans first overall in the Season 45 SMJHL Entry Draft has generated plenty of debate and conversation, as his brash and divisive personality creates fans and foes alike. However, perhaps the most prominent and intriguing outrage has come from fans who wanted to see Evans on their own SMJHL team, wearing a different shade of red.
Zach Evans, Nikolai’s father, played his junior seasons with the Detroit Falcons in Seasons 30 and 31 after being selected 25th overall in the Season 30 SMJHL Entry Draft. While the elder Evans’ stats were hardly outstanding or noteworthy in Detroit, he has since been regarded as a Falcons legend after a successful SHL career, with two Challenge Cup triumphs, the Season 38 Sarmad Khan Trophy, and an IIHF gold medal.
Zach Evans also spent his career during a time when the Falcons were constantly at odds with the Montreal Militia, mostly stemming from the addition of “The Deplorables,” a collection of SMJHL prospects who skipped the SMJHL Draft to join the Falcons together. Now, Zach’s son will be playing for that archrival team after being the first name off the board.
Nikolai, consistent with his comments before the draft, appeared unfazed by this development.
“I’m here to make my own name,” the younger Evans stated. “I’m excited to go to Montreal and prove I deserved to go first overall. I’m ready to see my new teammates and make some history and bring the Four Star Cup back to Montreal.”
Father Zach also seemed nonplussed by the situation.
“It’ll be a little weird at first, I’m sure, especially since I’ll try to catch some games on my off nights with the Jets,” Zach Evans said. “I’ll probably get a few chirps from the fans walking in there, I expect. But hey, that’s hockey. I’m happy for Nikolai, proud of him for going first overall, and I can’t wait to see how he does.”
Detroit fans, however, feel much differently about it.
Considering the hostile relations between the two teams at times, this reaction isn’t terribly surprising. And this should definitely add more fuel to the fire, as Nikolai will look to do something his father never did in Detroit – win a Four Star Cup.
“It would mean a lot to me,” said Nikolai Evans about winning an SMJHL Championship. “It’s really the one thing you can say my dad never did. So I want to win it badly. And yes, I would hold it over his head forever if I did. Especially if we beat Detroit in the finals.”
Forever?
“Forever. I’d make sure the Four Star Cup is the best man at my wedding when I get married. I will tie him to the front of the float for the Four Star Cup parade. It’s going to be a thing.”
Zach’s appraisal of this hypothetical scenario was much more succinct.
“I love my son,” Zach said. “But he’s a dick and I’d expect nothing less from the little shit.”
