S47 SMJHL First Round Review (x2 Draft, Research, 1788 Words+/-)
Here is a quick profile rundown of the first round picks of the S47 SMJHL Entry Draft. TPE data as of April 19th. 1. Travis Bitties - Left Wing - ![]() Drafted first overall in the S47 SMJHL entry level draft is the Austrian born; Travis Bitties. Bitties who is the long lost brother (Nephew) of superstar Tigole Bitties is storming out with 173 TPE before season start. Travis Bitties is right handed shot who played for the Wranglers during the S47 Prospect Showcase. Travis played exceptional banging out 14 goals and 23 points under 22 minutes a game. Travis ended up a +14. Travis lead the Wranglers in points, goals, and +/-. With 3 GWG and 4 first star nods this player build is off to a great start. 4th among left wingers, and 2nd in goals. The Falcons really got a great scorer. User @Tydy is a new user with the recent reddit drive (Ace recruited TyDy). This hasn’t stopped him from dishing out some good media and getting that bank to get a jump start on equipment. This should put him on the radars of SHL GMs already. Already quite active, participating in Fantasy and getting twitter income going. The Falcons came off of a disappointing season where they needed help on both sides of the ice, Bitties is a great addition for both. They upset the Whalers in the wildcard in the playoffs and look to only go up. 2. Alexander Thorstrom - Goalie - ![]() After Bitties we have the right handed goalie from Sweden; Alexander Thorstrom. During the S47 Prospect showcase Thorstrom also played for the Wranglers like Bitties. Thorstrom grabbed 10 wins, 1 shutout, and also going 5 for 5 on the penalty shot. Thorstrom was 2nd with a 0.894 Sv%. Thorstrom managed to grab 3 star nominations and 1 first star nod. Thorstrom is a larger butterfly goalie. With goalies, stats don’t tell the whole story and user activity having a better bearing on potential. No doubt this is a fantastic pick as @Jesster is an older user who produced a SHL HoF goalie in Ryan Jesster all the way back in S1! Welcome back! Look for Thorstrom to rise in the TPE as Jesster already has the bank needed for equipment and the site know how. A great pick for the Raptors as they will have a solid goalie for a few seasons, trying to address last seasons high GA of 145. 3. Kaspars Claude - Defense - ![]() Next up comes our first defenseman drafted, a natural right handed two-way defender from Latvia. During the S47 prospect showcase Claude grabbed a respectable 13 points and 2 goals with a little over 23 minutes a game. Claude doesn’t play a hard game only dishing out 10 hits but he was a hero defensively with 41 shot blocks in the 20 games played. Also capable of quarterbacking the power play with 4 power play points. Claude is a defenseman who can play on PP, or PK. Another new user from March (New User ID see comments)@Bruins10 has been very active with submitted graphics, an article, and was one of the GM’s of the Latvian team and it goes to show with 192 TPE. Joining some friendly faces in Theo Morgan, Claude looks to be another great pick for the Whalers who are looking to make a deeper push coming off of a disappointing early exit from the Falcons. 4. Piotr Horvat - Defense - ![]() Coming 4th overall is another defensemen in Piotr Horvat who hails from Russia. A right handed defenseman who plays more of a defensive game than Claude. Horvat grabbed 9 points during the S47 Prospect Showcase. Horvat also sniped 3 goals blocked 45 shots which led the entire showcase. Horvat plays a meaner game dishing out 23 hits while sitting in the box for 12 minutes. Horvat was relied upon heavily with 24 minutes a game. Unlike the previous pick, @Slowpoke is an active user who just retired Vasily Horvat, and who should have no issues developing or finding money. I’m not sure if Piotr is a long lost brother, or son of Vasily we will see. The Knights just got a whole lot deeper and made a good team pick adding a defensive piece with all their offensive weapons. 5. Gordon Bombay - Center - ![]() Halfway thru the first round we have our first center in Gordon Bombay. Bombay a USA born natural left handed playmaker had a good prospect showcase. Bombay grabbed 15 points and 8 goals, 2 of which were game winners. Bombay plays a complete game dishing out 19 hits, and always involved taking 52 hits good for 2nd in the showcase. Further to his value Bombay went 63% in the faceoffs in 691 attempts. Doing all of this in 24.5 minutes a game. Another new user since March; @RunnerBert11 has leapt to a great head start in the TPE race. RunnerBert11 has also dished out a hefty article and kept up with twitter for a good early income. Also partaking in fantasy. Lions improved significantly who had a good regular season but struggled to score goals. No doubt adding a playmaking center should help address that. 6. Nick Connolly - Left Wing - ![]() Up next we have our second winger in the US born Nick Connolly. Shooting right and who is another playmaker with speed to burn. Connolly played for the Stingrays during the prospect showcase nabbing 12 points and 4 goals with a little over 21 minutes a game. Connolly did not play on the special teams much. A very clean player taking no penalties and does not take the body much, playing an elusive game. Despite prefering to look for a pass, Connolly shot the puck 65 times. Connolly grabbed 2 first star nods as well. @shutdown is a new user joining from the recent reddit drive. Shutdown has already sent out some media, and dabbled in graphics that I thought looked great. Anaheim Outlaws got deeper offensively and look to improve on their tough early exit in the playoffs despite their great season. 7. Padraig Sarantez - Defense - ![]() Everybody loves defense and going 7th is the Irish born Padraig Sarantez. A large right handed shooter, Sarantez played for the Wranglers during the prospect showcase and grabbed 17 points and 2 goals, 1 of which was a game winner. Sarantez’s 15 assists placed him 8th among the showcase. No slouch defensively blocking 25 shots as well. Sarantez also played an obnoxious 25.5 minutes a game placing him 2nd among all players at the showcase for minutes played. @EuroCap is another returning user at this draft class. With an ex hall of famer in Padraigs’ Uncle Pedro; Eurocap should have no issue developing. Quite a lot of diversity in this draft class between the few active users, few returning users, and the new users. Another team need pick as Montreal traded away almost half of their defenseman before the trade deadline last season and had forwards playing defense during the last stretch. This should alleviate that a bit. 8. Joe Kerr - Right Wing - ![]() Coming 8th overall is our first right winger; Joe Kerr. Kerr who hails from Latvia is a big natural right handed playmaking winger. Kerr represented the Blazers during the prospect showcase and played good contributing 7 goals and 16 points in 21 minutes of play time. Grabbing 1 first star nod, Kerr also played on the powerplay and got 5 points. Despite being a playmaker Kerr let loose 152 attempted shots. Always involved in the play offensively, which is likely due to Kerrs’ high skating, and strength. @Le_Kris is a returning user who did not stick with his first player back in S44 and is giving it another go. Le_Kris is off to a good start with high TPE and should be familiar with the site and earning money. Coming off of a 4th place finish the Armada look to be in the finals this year and improve after losing in 6 to the eventual champs; the St. Louis Scarecrows in the Conference Finals. More offense is always a good thing. 9. Atlas Rush - Right Wing - ![]() Back to back right wingers taken in 8th and 9th. Next we have the Canadian born; Atlas Rush. Unlike most payers, Rush is a large right handed power forward. A rare commodity in the SHL. During the prospect showcase Rush got 18 points and 6 goals. Also going +4. Like a true power forward he plays a meaner game and grabbed 22 penalty minutes and dished out 54 hits in the 20 games played. Coming 3rd in penalty minutes, 2nd in hits, and 10th in shots with 77 on net. A complete player through and through. @Rublic is another returning user all the way back from 2011. This poises Rush to be one of the better power forwards who should develop fine. Halifax grabbed a great player to hopefully balance their, who also lost to the Scarecrows in the 2nd round after trading for some rentals. 10. Mika Kandinsky - Center - ![]() Taken last in the first round to the cup winners is Mika Kandinsky who comes from Russia. The 2nd of 4 centers available in the draft Kandinsky led all centers in the prospect showcase with 24 points, and 10 goals. A two-way center, this point total tied Kandinsky for 2nd for points in the entire showcase. Kandinsky also went +15 good for 2nd in the showcase. Statistically speaking Kandinsky might be the best player at the showcase showing up on almost all areas with 2 GWG, a hat trick, 48 hits taken, 24.25 minutes a game, 1 GTG, 56.51FO%, etc. And 3 first star nods. This might be the benefit of playing on a good team but stats don't lie. @Mika_Kandinsky is a new user this April, but has gotten off to a great start with 5 media articles all of differing variety giving him equipment to start the season. St. Louis might have made a sleeper pick here as I believe centers are inherently more valuable especially with only 4 available. St Louis looks to make it 4 in a row!! There you have it the first round review. To me almost all teams improved significantly with the S47 class being very strong early. Lots of different players taken. Welcome back all returning users, welcome to the SHL new users, and thanks for reading! User Breakdown:

Great read! A couple things though, Ace brought me into this website, not reddit, and because of that Travis is Tigole’s nephew!
